I actually AM happy with my jewelry collection -- it is ever-evolving and brings me a lot of enjoyment. I treasure my loose gemstones, both the larger group that will never be set but are periodically inspected and fondled and the smaller set of stones patiently waiting their turn for a setting. And I love love love my rings -- unique pieces of jewelry that only exist because I matched that particular gemstone with that particular semi-mount (stock or custom). I consider it not just a hobby but a learning adventure based on nature and geology and geography. Perhaps the best part is the very fine people that have come into my life because of a shared interest in gemstones or jewelry-making.
i knew then what i know now...would have saved up and bought bigger better pieces instead of alot of mid-range pieces that dont get much wear today...early on i went for quantity and not quality ...but hey i was 12 years old when i started collecting and got my first ring at age7.I would have bought alot of the pieces that i let pass by the way side...the 1920s zuni and hopi pieces...the 3 carat vvs1-e color for $3,000...the multitute of colored stones that i should have bought but didnt.
I wish I had found PS before I started collecting maul jewelry! I've gotten rid of most of my pieces by selling them in order to offset the cost of upgrading to better pieces. I sold quite a bit of junkish stuff so I could upgrade my ering last year and don't regret it at all. I've also re-set my "promise ring" and added a few Tiffany pieces to my collection. It's never-ending for me though....I love my ering but still think of getting a bigger stone or different setting. Sigh.....
I love my jewelry and I know I'm ridiculously spoiled. As my husband loves to remind me! I don't really have any regrets about it. I have gotten really lucky, what with working at an antique mall and being able to scoop up some of the super, super good buys (like the half carat each OECs set in ugly '60s settings I rescued, that match beautifully and will be earrings eventually... that I only spent $350ish on, total.) And I shop the second hand markets like eBay pretty constantly and have scooped up some really underpriced stuff that otherwise I wouldn't have been able to afford in a zillion years. I've had pretty consistent taste for years and years, so even my older stuff from, like, 10 years ago, is antique and goes with stuff I've recently bought.
Working around antique jewelry is definitely dangerous
