Are You Going to Shop ON Thanksgiving Day?

Forget Black Friday, how about the stores opening on Thanksgiving? Will you be there? Personally, I think it's pathetic to require store personnel to come to work on Thanksgiving. Yes, I know times are tough, but how about one or two days a year when we can chill from the madhouse?

Yes I will

Ha ha!! You caught me! I was about to ask you WHY?

Hi,

No. I think its terrible to ask people to come in on Thanksgiving to service customers. I would boycott the stores. Is there anyone out there who finds this type of Christmas shopping a good thing. I am so turned off by it, I actually dislike Christmas. Don't buy presents this yr., do something else with the money , or nothing at all.

I do go to the Mall once for Christmas. I do like the decorations.

are you?? and why if you are Jewel

Nope, family time.

No. And I agree that stores should be boycotted.

My mother works at a major retailer and has to work from 11pm to 10am on Thanksgiving night. We have to leave our Thanksgiving celebration early for her to get to work and on top of that, she always stresses about being rested enough so does not get to relax and enjoy Thanksgiving as much as she wants to. Plus the whole not sleeping for over 24 hours thing.

I think stores that are open on Thanksgiving or even really early (2am) are despicable.

This.

Anyone who does not work in certain types of services (hospital staff, first responders, etc.) should not have to work on Thanksgiving or Christmas. If we stay home with our families (or our TVs and Marie Callendar turkey dinners), then everyone else could do the same.

And, yes, I mean stay at home. No eating Thanksgiving out in a restaurant, no matter how great the food is. Those people deserve the same day off that you have. If you want to go somewhere, volunteer at a shelter, nursing home, or hospital.

Yeah, I know I'm being rather brazen in suggesting that the holidays aren't all about us and what we want when we want it. Imagine a holiday season where everyone thinks of his fellow man first . . . what would that be like?

No, I will be home all day. I grew up being sure that we had all our food supplies the day before so we wouldn't even have to go to the grocery store. Hopefully I can do so this year.

Thankfully, I live in one of the few states where it is not allowed. In Rhode Island and Massachusetts, stores can not open until midnight.

I was wondering which states prohibited opening...I've been hearing the Kmart commercials about 6 AM "doorbuster deals" ON THANKSGIVING and it always says "except where prohibited by law." Thanks for answering that, rubybeth!

I will certainly not be heading out ON Thanksgiving, nor will I be shopping early on Black Friday. I think it's positively ridiculous and an incredible shame, really. I never shop at Wal-Mart, but this year Target is off my list of potential retailers as well. Looks like I'll be sticking to Amazon and my Prime membership this year.

No way, no how!!!!!!!!!!!!! I dont even need to go out on Black Friday :appl: most of the shopping I have left to do can be done online

It makes me so sad to think that some people could be forced to work on Thanksgiving day. It is such a wonderful holiday...not centered around gifts...

So no, I would never want to go a store on that day!

What stores are open? I'm curious.

Not me! I hate crowds, but my DH says he is looking for a bowling alley for my DS. So he is considering going to sears to find it. Because DS is special needs and this is the first time he has ever brought an ad to DH and pointed out a toy. Now it is my DHs mission in life. Unfortunately, they are sold out everywhere :( But me, I'll be in my cozy pjs with some spiked eggnog or a nice glass of wine ;)

Nope! I agree that it should be boycotted.

Good one Rosetta! I was taken aback until I finally scrolled down a bit... whew!! :))

And heck no! My mom works for a retailer and I remember her store opening on TGiving morning a few years in a row... she had to work, arriving home just as the turkey was being placed on the table. We didn't get to watch the Macy's Day Parade with her, our tradition, and she was tired of course for the festivities. So yeah, I'm not a fan of stores being open.

No.
Well, maybe on line, but not in an actual store.

No way. We are going to be hosting Thanksgiving as we always do and enjoying the holiday with our family and friends as it was intended. I think it is awful that people are being made to work this holiday (except for critical fields that cannot take off- hospitals, home healthcare workers, etc).

Yes, I think it's so sad that a lot of these minimum and near minimum waged staffers to these stores are being FORCED to work: mandatory or get fired. Yes, because that choice is so damned convenient in a crappy economy, isn't it?! :angryfire: I will not be shopping on Thanksgiving.

I'm actually very happy that a few of you have posted the same sentiment. I hope that, by having a bunch of people refuse to shop on Thanksgiving day, the stores will realize how wrong the situation is, and not open the next years. There are current lists of places to 'ban' on Thanksgiving, if anyone's interested. They're posted all over the web and on Reddit.

I will absolutely NOT be shopping on Thanksgiving. I agree that it is horrible to make people work these crazy hours, especially when they are low wage jobs. Can't we have a couple of days a year when everyone gets to have the day off?

I hope that the number of Thanksgiving day shoppers is low enough that the stores get the message.

No, no shopping for me on Thanksgiving Day. I hope this trend one day soon turns around and it will have to be consumer driven.

Wait, they're having sales on Thanksgiving day? Sign me up!!!

I live 3000 miles from any family members and have to work both the day before and the day after Thanksgiving. Therefore, I'll miss all the good Black Friday sales. I have Thanksgiving day off, but I'm not doing anything because a friend is having me over for dinner on Saturday (it's better for our work schedule). Most of the places I'd normally go to for errands will be closed. So I'm all for some hedonistic shopping on Thanksgiving day...it's not like I'll have anything else to do!

ETA: For what it's worth, the store workers are probably getting time and a half pay for coming in and aren't being forced to, but are being ASKED to. I have to work way more than 40 hours in a typical week and never get a cent of overtime pay since I'm a medical resident, so if I want to shop on one of my few weekdays off a year, I will.

Thanksgiving had never been a big-deal holiday for me. It's not part of my culture, my family didn't really celebrate it, and many's the year I'd be out on the day of, wandering forlornly, wishing there was something for me to DO.

That said, I don't think the thing I'd do is shop. And I hate the idea of people who find the holiday important being coerced into it. So, NO, I will not be hunting for bargains on The Day of the Turkey.

HI:

What if one goes out to eat on Thanssgiving--does that count?

cheers--Sharon

I would and honestly I'd work then too. I used to sign up for it when I was away at grad school bec we didn't do anything. But I do agree that being FORCED to work or be terminated is a serious problem(unionize!)

Retail workers should unionize? Please elaborate.

I've been in retail (mostly) on and off for 18 years now, and working the day after Thanksgiving (aka Black Friday) is just par. However, in recent years malls are opening at midnight on Friday and frankly it's a bitch. I am fortunate to work for a locally owned retailer (and have for my last few retail stints) so I don't have to feel that particular burn. I do worry about those who work retail and go from a long holiday and on into work that same night with little sleep because they've been up cooking and serving since the wee hours the night before. These are not good candidates for driving when they return home from their shifts...

I agree, Holly. I often work holidays (a great number of them, unfortunately), due to the nature of my job. But I cringe when I drive past people getting gas, going to the cinemas, last minute grocery shopping, etc. Just give everyone a break, take a day off for society! :))

No, I'm not going shopping tomorrow. I have to run to the grocery store to pick a few things up to bring to my parents' but I'll do that today.
