you are what you eat?.. :lickout:

my wife is in shock that my cholesterol level and glucose level are normal considering all the junk foods i eat everyday...

Nope! Some people just have awesome genetics. My step-dad and DH are like that. They can eat anything and not gain weight, nor do they have any health issues. My DH's cholesterol is somewhat high, but I think that's because he only drinks whole milk (ick, I know, but he needs the calories).

I, on the other hand, have to watch what I eat and work out just to keep from gaining weight. Although I am pretty naturally healthy in terms of cholesterol (my doc said my good cholesterol was the highest he had ever seen), glucose, b/p, etc.

Nope.

I chose my parents carefully and can eat pretty much what I like although I avoid bread. I eat huge amounts of butter, cream and animal fats.

I am Diabetic so I definitely have to be careful what I eat. I don't want to pop my clogs when i'm young! I'd like to get old and misbehave

Yes. I am very selective about the foods I put into my body. I'm also extremely (my husband says obsessively) careful about the products I put on my body and the household products I come into contact with.

Yeah, I'm a firm believer! We all have foods that do or do not work with our bodies and everyone is different, so it's important to see what works with your body.

Some of us can get away with eating more junk food...others have problems with healthy foods - like, even though almonds are suppose to be healthy, every time I eat them, my nose gets all itchy. Food allergy!

The one thing all of us probably don't do enough of that we could benefit from is drinking more water. That's said to increase energy levels and plump up cells so they're healthy! I notice when I drink more, I feel better and more alert.

I believe that stress has an enormous effect on our health, and is more important than the food we eat.

It's one of the weird things with medical science -- not all bodies are the same.

Both my brother and I have "freakishly low" cholesterol levels, even though we don't necessarily watch what we eat.

And, of course, others can live on a diet with very little meat/saturated or trans fat and still have high cholesterol levels, simply because they're genetically disposed to it.

Sure, a diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables and little fat/meat is supposedly the ideal, but it's not a guarantee you won't drop dead of a heart attack or that you'll live to 100.

No... otherwise I would be a chicken-fried steak or a cheez-it.

I can't eat refined sugars though because doing so gives me very bad anxiety issues. Meh. I had a big sweet tooth before I figured this out. Now my only "candy" is Coke Zero. So, so sad.

I sure hope not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The adage can apply. Sodas, once in awhile, won't make you diabetic. But choosing soda for every drink every day will get you there, fast. My sister and BIL are living proof.

This. I refuse to be afraid of food, go with Julia Child's advice to eat what you want, but everything in moderation. I can't stand the castrated butter-substitutes; I use real butter, but in moderation, e.g. Exercise is essential for me, though -- if I do it regularly I can eat pretty much whatever I like. Plus am tons less tense.

I've known people who have eaten 'bad" stuff, smoked, drunk waay too much, who lived into their 90s, and others who did everything "right" and still corked off far too young. I've decided there's no silver bullet: it's a combination of genes, luck, & when your card comes to the top of the deck.

What kind of tea and do you add anything to it?

Apparently, I am a nut. A nut on a bed of arugula with some goat cheese. A nutty wino goat on a bed of greens. A satyr as one critic mysteriously wrote. Also a cracker, or so too I've been called. A nutty wino goat cracker on a bed of greens.

100% I'm vegetarian, but lately I'm leaning towards a vegan and mostly raw diet.

I don't buy it.

I know a vegetarian whose cholesterol is through the roof.

But I am a big believer in vitamins, I think they are like fertilizer for people, and without them, you won't thrive. I only take a B and a multi every day, but without them, I'm a listless mess.

I think the idea that one set of foods or balance of inputs or eating habits work for everyone is a fiction invented to sell diet books. Ever since I was a kid, I've gravitated towards a low carb, high protein diet. I don't care for bread or rice. When I stay away from desserts too, I slim down, feel great, have tons of energy for exercise and life generally. If I eat the exact same calorie count on a diet with the FDA recommended carb levels, I gain weight and get sluggish. A friend of mine is a bread-and-pasta-powered vegetarian and quite trim and fit (yoga junkie).

The may be TMI, but I've tried several multivitamins, and they Lways make me really gassy :( I'd like to take them, so I could feel a bit better, but the gas is unbearable. Not smelly, but just so embarrassing.

the first thing I thought about was the "someecards"...it's a picture of a guy looking at himself in the mirror I think, and he says "you are what you eat? That's funny, I don't remember eating a sexy beast this morning"
