Are you a "fashionista" or a "uniform dresser"?

By fashionista I mean you really value unique and classic pieces, and putting outfits together every day.
By uniform dresser, I mean you wear the same stuff all the time, maybe changing the colors around, with random bursts of uniqueness?

I am DEFINITELY a uniform dresser. I wear either jeans, cargos, or some sort of "dress pant" that can be dressed up or down, every day. I also wear some combination of a cardigan, camisole, vneck tshirt (target ftw!) layered everyday, either all three or two of the aforementioned. My shoes are particularly boring: navy converse all star slip ons. Seriously. Every. Day. I bought a few pattered cardis and camis recently, all the same cuts and stuff, so I could "mix it up" occasionally. My closet colorwise is also very ...similar. Charcoal, Teal, Purples, Navy, Light Blue, Grass Green, Lime Green, occasionally a white cami. And a camel leather bag. That's about it. I don't branch out, I don't like to wear things that compete with my hair. And I am VERY casual.

I know part of my lack of "risk" is due to being on the line of regular and plus sizes, and having boobs, and I don't want skintight anything.

Ill read all these fashion blogs to see the outfits people wear, but most of them are "too out there" for me. I had told myself that by my 30th bday I wanted to own and learn to walk in a fabulous pair of heels. That has come and long gone, no heels and no ability to walk in them!

It depends a little upon the day. At home, I'm fine with jeans or a skirt and a top. For work, I'm definitely not in a "suit environment" so I like to mix nice pieces and experiment a bit. Generally speaking, my taste in clothing is classic. My favorite clothing stores for work clothes are Ann Taylor, Nordstrom, etc. I most enjoy accessorizing with a great handbag and, of course, jewelry!

Ame,

Funny that you should ask, as I've been making a conscious effort to *step out of my comfort zone*. I'm a uniform dresser. Pencil skirt in every colour imaginable, sweater dress with belt. I haven't worn a pair of jeans in almost 15 YEARS!!!!!

So I took the plunge and bought a pair of skinny jeans 2 weeks ago. It's only a partial success because they still have the tag on them and I haven't worn them yet....but I haven't returned them either!

I think it's easier to be stuck in a rut then to make the conscious decision to be original everyday. I call it laziness!

I'm not sure what kind of dresser I am, but I tend to go for classical stuff with good lines that will work for a fairly long time. Does that make me "uniform?" Colors vary a lot, but I pretty much know what I think looks right on me, no need to experiment anymore. DH got me a subscription to Bazaar -- if "fashionista" means appearing in some of the craaaazy stuff there, I ain't one.

lol! Yea I have all these various mag subs too, from Vogue/Elle to Instyle/Lucky. There's just no damn way I'd wear 99.9% of that, especially not as styled.

I often wonder if I lost a significant amount of weight (uniform lazy dresser = lazy person with diet and exercise!) if I'd lose any boobage so I could wear button downs again without looking ridiculous. I never lost weight in my boobs when I lost 50lbs which totally blew.

I don't own or wear skirts, like, ever, I don't even own a single pair of shorts. I only own dresses that I wore for a wedding, and then I usually donate them. I HATE skirts/dresses and shorts. I just find them unbelievably uncomfortable and way too warm in the summer since the heat just gets "trapped" in there. Ugh.

Totally ditto this.

Uniform. I don't have the body to even bother trying some of these creative options so I'm comfortable in tailored pants, jeans, skirts, shirts/tops, and dresses. I love shoes and purses so happy to glam up with those, but I go for tried and true looks. By this age, I'm not into anything creative anymore, I'm comfortable in the styles I go for. Boring, but oh well...

I have always worn classic clothes. My wardrobe is really lacking right now because I refuse to buy anything until I lose some weight. But I wear jeans daily and maybe once a week dress pants with some kind of top and jacket/shirt/sweater. I wear capris all summer. Boring, comfortable clothes. But colors are jewel tones and black...teal, hot pink, royal blue, purple, red. Now I want gemstone rings in each of those colors and I will be set! (Check off royal blue from the list!).

I'm a uniform dresser for work, and a crazy dresser in my free time.
I blame my time as a costume design major in undergrad. It's impossible to have an entire vault of amazing costumes at your fingertips and NOT get a little creative.

Both.

When I'm just hanging out running errands, half the time I'm clad in a uniform consisting of Hudson Jeans and a Michael Stars tee.

The other half, I'm wearing some weird vintage thing - a tulle skirt, a cut-down kimono, platform boots, what-have-you.

For work, I always look professional, but it's a toss-up as to whether it's straight-up Brooks Brothers, eccentric-lady-professor in a brightly embroidered silk chinoiserie jacket, or full-fledged tweed-and-elbow-patches drag.

Agree with Haven - fashion is all about costume and deciding which face to present to the world. And as you can guess from my attitude towards jewelry, variety is the spice of life!

I'm usually a uniform dresser, especially in the colder months. I own lots of straight legged pants/jeans, and lots of sweaters and tops that don't require ironing. I love V-necks, so most of my t-shirts and sweaters are V-necks.

I think my body is easy to dress....straight ruler shape, not a lot of curves, so I do experiment with other styles occasionally especially summer, where I wear jumpers, sheath dresses, shapeless bag-dresses, mini skirts, maxi dresses, knee-length flared skirts.

I'm a uniform dresser. But I have fun shoes. I express my fun side with my shoes and that little bit of creativity makes up, in my mind, for the boring rest of it all. If I was thinner I would dress cuter, but I would still be a uniform dresser. It's just my personality. I'm not a fashionista at any size.

I'm really not sure! I like to wear the same staple pieces over and over again, but I like to re-mix them and wear them different ways. I tend to hang on to really well-made garments and very interesting accessories and I re-incorporate them into my wardrobe (which for the most part is pretty basic) every few years. I really like to try "new" shapes and styles (most of them aren't actually new, they've just been brought back from another decade--yep, I'm getting old enough to say that) but only those that actually work with, not against, my body type, and in moderation. Speaking of moderation, I'm pretty moderate in most aspects of my life so I guess it's fitting that I have a moderate approach to dressing as well.

Uniform for work, much more fashion for my personal time, especially summer!

Totally uniform...

Jeans w/t-shirts or jeans w/sweaters. In the summer, shorts w/t-shirts or shorts w/tank tops.

I have a lot of shoes and a couple pairs are more unique, but not major fashion statements.

The goal for me is to buy something that will still be in style a few years down the road. When I do buy jeans, I get designer ones, however, I try and have pairs that can be worn pretty much anywhere.

I'm a uniform dresser for sure. I wear scrubs to my full time job as a nursing assistant and jeans with some sort of top to my PT office job. I wear a lot of plain shirts with a crew neck or short vneck as I have no cleavage. If I find something that fits I'll buy it in a few different colors. I'm petite and it's hard to find cheap clothes that fit properly so I hate shopping. I don't really have any "nice" clothes so weddings and funerals usually mean making a mad dash at the last minute to try to find something reasonable to wear. I don't wear dresses or skirts regularly (maybe once every few years) and I also don't wear shorts very often since I tend to be cold.

My shoe wardrobe is equally as plain - a pair of brown Eastland shoes and the same pair in black. My sister bought me a really cute pair of Sperry's for Christmas but the laces are leather and don't stay tied so they don't get worn. I have a few pairs of a plain pumps but nothing to wear them with. I wear a size 5 shoe so that makes it very difficult to find shoes that fit.

Totally a uniform dresser. I've even got the same style of pants in about five different colors. Yes, I mix it up and change things, but I like to keep the "basics" fairly standard.

I've got two really funky dresses in the exact same cut. I can't say they're uniforms, but I tend to stick to styles I feel suit me.

Hide my black polo-necks and you die!

Uniform in general - I have polo-necks in a load of colours, smart black trousers, less smart black trousers and jeans... that is what I wear most of the time.

For work I have a lot of suits but mainly in bright colours - pink, red, green, orange.

I'm 5ft 10" and very slim so I can wear most things - I do have a few issues with lengths though... I have a short body and very long arms and legs which means all my trousers are a couple of inches too short (I like waisted trousers and those in long lengths are made for people with long bodies and don't fit me) and I need nearly 5 inches added to sleeves... I used to have jackets and trousers made at one time.

Uniform. I struggle with it. Jeans, tshirts, hoodies, sneakers. All the time. I haven't left behind the college kid AE/Hollister/A&F wardrobe because...I can't figure out "real" fashion. I REALLY don't like how much it costs and I can't "see" what looks nice on me. I look at something on the rack and think it's ugly and frumpy, but then my fashionista coworker wears the same type of thing and looks like bloody Audrey Hepburn. :nono: I need a personal stylist. One that's free. :cheeky:

Uniform but I really enjoy putting my classic pieces together in different ways. I am going to have my sister help me clean out my closet and get rid of anything that I haven't worn in a year and doesn't fit or doesn't look good on me. She has a much better 'eye' than I do, though I have gotten a lot better at buying things that fit me well. I can look at a dress on a hanger and know if it would look good or not. I have a lot of clothes because I've been the same size since college, and we have four distinct seasons in Minnesota, all of which require totally different clothing/layers and shoes.

For work in the winter, I wear corduroys and sweaters or button-down shirts, with boots or Clarks slip-ons depending on how cold it is. In the summer, I switch to khakis in different neutral tones (tan, brown, navy, grey, etc.) and some skirts (denim, tan, black), and then mix it up with different knit shirts, blouses, and cardigans. I have a surprising number of dresses which I like to wear when it is hot (usually July & August) and I can't handle wearing pants when it's 85+ degrees and humid. I wear a lot of ballet flats (black, red, brown, navy, gold, etc.).

Every day after work, though, I go home and put on jeans or shorts and a t-shirt or tank with a hoodie if it's cooler. I can't stand being in 'work clothes' longer than I need to be.

Uniform dresser, though I'm a bargain hunter which forces me to mix it up and keep things interesting (for me, anyway!). I wasn't born to be cutting edge - and comfort and practicality are more important to me than making a fashion statement, except maybe when it comes to my shoes.

I wish Indy gal was posting. Now there was a true fashionista!

More fashionista than uniform...less fashionista now that I am late 30s versus late 20s! I love Nordstrom, expensive jeans, four inch heels and high dollar pocketbooks. I don't mind investing if it will last for seasons and seasons. I really think about cost per wear when deciding. But I love to mix high and low. Most work days, I will wear a cute dress from Target with $100+ shoes and a $1k bag. Not to mention, those dresses go in the wash so no dry cleaning needed!! I prefer dresses and skirts for work, I hate pants. My field is business casual with a lot of flexibility. I shop Target, Old Navy and Marshalls for basics, trendy stuff and things to change up my more expensive uniform basics that I try to keep forever! I hate shorts most of the time but I have a few pairs. Some of my uniform things are artist T shirts from jcrew, basic ribbed tank tops from Old Navy, cute little socks from Target (I wear them with boots because I don't believe in stockings either :D but I will wear black tights when it is really really cold).

I'm not sure if I can be labeled a uniform dresser considering the fact I LOVE dresses and have probably... oh... dear... 60 of them in my closet. And more folded that can't be worn in the particular season.

I would say 5 days a week I wear a dress and if I'm wearing pants (I don't do shorts... like... ever) they're conservatively cut jeans or chinos. With those, I wear an oxford or a cardigan and scarf. I do love my scarves.

Given my profession, I would say I am more "fashionable" but not a fashionista.

I would say uniform for work for the most part and somewhere in between for outside of work. I used to be a fashionista to the extreme when I worked in fashion, but now that I'm not surrounded by it I've gotten a lot less fashionista. Plus I've gotten lazier in my old age! :cheeky:

I mix high and low, as well... but not that high. No $1K bags for me. lol ;(

Since I have the kids to get clothes for, I got to pick and choose which to spend $ on, so I buy nicer jeans & shoes, but usually wear t-shirts from Old Navy or get stuff on the sale rack at Nordstrom. I figure that sort of balances things out. The only thing I must wear that's branded are my jeans. The rest, I could care less!

I think I'm a good mix. I'm a huge fan of jeans and t-shirts, but I add to them with my vast collection of accessories. I like scarves with just about everything and I have a bunch of fun necklaces, bracelets and earrings to choose from. I don't leave the house without accessories lol...Plus, I like purses and often switch them up. I think basic is good to start with and then build on my outfit from there. An outift of jeans and a t is not good enough for me. I like just a little extra color and fun stuff!

I'm definitely a uniform dresser. When I find something I like, I tend to buy it in a few colors. Patterns don't look great on me, so everything I own is a solid color. It's a boring wardrobe, I'll admit. I'm so not a fashionista. I have no idea what's "in" and don't really care (I don't like fashion magazines and I don't keep up on trends). I shop at Kohl's, Macy's, Land's End, and LL Bean. I like the casual and comfy look. I never wear dresses and hardly ever wear skirts. Oh and heels? What are those? I'm in flats, khakis, dark jeans, black pants, and a solid top or sweater for work, and I'll thrown on a pair of yoga pants and a comfy top when I'm just hanging out at home.

Where I work, anything more than burlap is overdressing. "Uniform" would be too polite a description for my work clothes.
When I go somewhere, I like to be a fashionista.

I am totally a uniform dresser. Jeans and a basic top most days. When it's warm capris and a lighter weight basic top :)
Except with jewelry. I switch it up everyday to something different. Often I plan my outfit around my jewelry. I do love scarves.

I can't even walk in heels. It's either boots, my converse or flats for me.
