Let me caveat this by saying the only thing I appreciate as much as a good piece of jewelry is a good rug!

So after months of searching for a new rug for the living room (and for some inexplicable reason I have my heart set on blue... ) I came across this rug yesterday.

http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Grimsby_Area_Rug/

I found it in Home Depot completely by accident, and it''s only $619 for an 8 X 11, which is a far (gentler!) cry from the SEVEN THOUSAND DOLLAR one I''ve been eying at my local rug store. Anyway, I came home and started nosing around the internet and then found this one:

Are they the same? The pattern seems to be identical, but the Willington appears darker on my screen (which might just be a function of the photo of the rug). It''s even called "sky blue" for both rugs. The sizes available are slightly different though

I''m *guessing* they are the same... but why is one $999 and one $619 in 8 X 11?

Grimsby $619

Willington $999

The website calls them the same color but the $619 one is from New Zealand and the $999 one is from India. Since they are from different places I''m guessing the colors are probably different. The pattern is the same though. Maybe there is something about wool from India that makes it so much better but I bet the New Zealand wool would be just fine!! Those are pretty rugs either way

They look the same to me! I vote for the $619 one!

Also something I found was that a lot of the rugs listed as 5x7, 8x11, etc., aren''t really that size. Instead of 5x7 they''re more like 4''6"x6''6", etc. I figured it out when I bought the size rug pad for my dining room rug and the rug pad was a good few inches larger on each side.

The patterns sure look the same. They are pretty.

Oh damn -- and now here it is from Horchow:

http://www.horchow.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=cprod66090053&parentId=cat6120749&masterId=cat6120732&index=2&cmCat=cat000000cat000046cat6120732cat6120749

And they are having a 20% off sale with free shipping (and no tax due to the state I''m in), which actually puts it in between the price of the other two. This one is from New Zealand.

Thanks sparklyheart for pointing out the country thing, I totally missed that!

Also, I should have said earlier that the Grimsby is much darker in person that it is in the computer picture (it actually looks like the Willington).

ARGH, no wonder I have so much trouble ordering stuff off the internet!!!

Seriously thing2, if I get the two samples I ordered I''m going to be THRILLED if they are the same because I''m getting the one for $619 and that''s $380 I can use toward some other thing in the house that will drive me equally as crazy, but I''m going to be p!ssed off they caused me this much angst and also that I ordered (and thefore paid for shipping) and will have to send back (and thefore pay for shipping AGAIN) the two little rugs!

I like the delicate color of the more expensive rug, but I''d probably chose the cheaper one because a) its cheaper and b)its a rug, and I wouldn''t want to worry about keeping a pale colored and expensive rug clean.

While I like the delicate color of the more expensive rug, I''d opt for the cheaper one because a) its cheaper and b)its darker coloring will stand up to more wear, because it is a rug after all.

Marcy, I''m glad you think the patterns are the same too because I actually went to Home Depot today, had the salesperson pull both rugs up on the computer, and argue with me that they were different. I am hoping the ol'' eyesight doesn''t turn out to be the *second* thing to go, LOL!

Indy, there is something to be said for not having to worry about keeping an expensive rug clean! The rug I have in the living room now has a cream color for its base and I can't tell whether it's absolutely *filthy* or whether it's just the light. It definitely looks cleaner in the bright morning sun so I try not to go into that room from noon on, LOL!

The pattern looks the same. The quality (density and length of the pile, quality of the dyes) could be different -- or not. It could just be a marketing thing. Yay for getting samples!

Ha ha VR, now I want a sample of the one from Horchow too -- but somehow I''m going to resist!!!

they definitely look very similar - I would go with the cheaper one too :)

They certainly look the same to me - perhaps the darkness in the second photo is more a lighting thing? Nice pattern.

I would go for the cheaper one Dee - btw, NZ wool is known as some of the finest in the world, used to create high fashion in Europe and so on - hence I would not have any concerns about the quality of the wool in comparison to the Indian rug...

However, as VR mentioned there may be some nuances such as pile thickness and so on which accounts for the price difference..

Maevie and Arjunajane, I love that you''re supporting my inclination toward the cheaper one! Really, unless there is some DRASTIC difference between the two 2 X 3s that I ordered as samples I am definitely going less expensive.

sweet! Let us know your thoughts when they arrive..how interesting Dee that you say your second "passion " to jewellery is fine rugs.

Personally, I dont think I could pay more than 1k for a rug-and than i would really need to love it. I haven''t seen something that warrants that kind of interest thus far

I would however be very keen to go rug / throw / etc shopping somewhere exotic like morocco and fill my home with different and fabulous textiles, that would be fun

deejay - delurking to say that i love rugs too, and i love the ones you''ve chosen!

good call on the blue, i purchased a gorgeous silk rug from south asia in grey/blue and love how it looks in my living room. let me try and find a pic of it to share...

out of the 2 you''ve posted, i like the grimsby better (plus you''ll save a bit!).

I actually like the $619 version better because the pattern isn''t as scrunched together as it is in the other rug. The more expensive rug seems darker to me as well.

Threadjack...........Dee how is your knee doing???

Arjunajane, I LOVE a fine rug and have no problem spending a decent amount of $ on one, but I have some other house projects to do right now so I was really hesitating over the $7K option. (I am also hesitating over the recent idea of spending $ to reset The Brick into a 3 stone option, but that is a topic for another thread... !)

abde, I don't know why I'm in such a blue mood lately, but I really am! It's funny, for years my rooms all had a red/burgandy/pink/coral theme to them, but I'm over that. When the XHH moved out last month I got new bedding, jettisoning the burgandy duvet and going straight for this cool blue/grey. I swear, it's like a whole new room! The family room has a burgandy based rug in it, but it was moved up from the third bedroom and the furniture in that room also came from other places in the house, so I'm not tired of that yet. Give it time though... !

Michelle, I think the patterns are actualy the same, you just can't see it as much on the lighter one. And knee is F*CKED UP.

Was supposed to have surgery today but doc said it will actually be 3-4 more weeks. Oh joy... Thanks for asking though!!!

I should probably take a picture of what's in the living room right now so you guys can see what I'm working with.

Hi dee jay,
You may want to check out rugsusa as well. i bought a $700.00 runner for a bathroom that I paid less than $400 for. I had found the rug at Hagopian(We are in Michigan and I don''t know if this is a "chain" or singular rug company) but researched online and was able to buy it at RugsUSA. It''s so much fun(and expensive) to decorate. Good luck :)

I want to ditto the above and also add that the price difference might be due to the different exchange rates of NZ and India.

well the two "sky blue" look different to me - one has a beige background and blue swirls, the other has a blue background with brown swirls.... the exact colors could be different monitor to monitor etc. but I don''t think I''d confuse a blue background with a beige one...

Actually I looked and it actually says on one "wool from new zealand" and the other "made in india" - the both could have nz wool shipped to india lol

okay you mentioned the brick - now it''s time to start that thread dj!!

I have a house full of oriental/persian rugs. All mine are handknotted, not machine made. They were pricey but are more than 20 years old and in the same shape as when we got them. A quality area rug will last forever if you take care of them properly.

That said, are these rugs machine or hand knotted? The machine made ones are not as comfortable or as durable as a hand knotted one. If they are all machine made then I would go with the chaper one, however, I am not impressed with the ones that come from India. Also, by saying the rug has "silk highlights" doesn''t necessarily means it is silk. It could be combed cotton.

snowflakeluvr, shame on your for introducing me to rugsusa!!! I spent A LOT of time on there yesterday and now I''m thinking if one of the samples I ordered doesn''t WOW me I might check out some other ones. ACK!!!

SDL, I''m so confused... can''t wait to see these both in person!

4ever, OMG; the exchange rate. It''s not enough to have to pick a rug, but now I''m sitting here monitoring currencies too. J/K, but that''s a good point. Hmmm...

Sara, the first one (which is the one I saw in person) actually does have a blue background (in person it looks about the color that the second one does on my screen). And I can''t even think about The Brick right now. Must redo master bathroom first!!!

soocool, ooh, another rug lover! All of mine are hand knotted with the exception of the one in my office. the only beef I have with the office rug is that the tassles aren''t looking so great on one end but I think that''s a function of the cleaning lady being a bit aggressive with the vacuum and Oscar choosing them as his snack of choice when he was a puppy. From a quality standpoint I totally agree with you but I don''t know if I want to spend "real" $$$ on this right now, and you mention you''ve had yours for 20 years. I recedorate pretty frequently so there''s a very good chance this thing is going to end up in the garage (with many of it''s currently unused brothers and sisters...
