I live up high so no flood insurance for us (I specifically did not want to live in a flood zone), but the area below me is in on the Delaware River and it has flooded badly in past years that a number of homes had to be placed on stilts and others became uninhabitable.
It is required where we are, but it's actually not a bad deal compared to homeowners.
We were flooded once (knock on wood) and they sent an adjuster to our area, who assessed each home. The checks came pretty quickly, so it was much better than homeowners which-- BTW--paid nothing.
In some areas. We don't need it, but many other areas in the town do. Our town is hilly, and there is a river and many small creeks which do flood in the spring time.
Curiously, when we purchased the current house we are in - we were not required to get flood insurance.
Our house is less than 50 feet from the Lamprey River in NH. The homes in the area have all had 1-4 feet of water within their living space during the "mother's day" flood in 2006.
For a peace of mind, we purchased a policy through the NFIP. for $350 a year, it is well worth the $$$ cause I have the feeling that one day, we'll get flooded. But let's hope not
No flood insurance for our house (4 miles from ocean), but the first two houses we put an offer on, which were on the water, required it. The quote for the first house wasn't that bad...I think $2K/year for the minimum amount (which wouldn't have covered the cost to rebuild). But the second house we put an offer on was in a riskier area and I seem to remember the quote being close to $6K/year for the minimum.
Depends if you're in a flood zone or not. They moved a lot of houses out that were in the flood zone after the big floods of '93, but some are still there and some of the ones nearby are considered flood zone and you're required to have it. Our neighborhood is far enough up and away from the river that if it flooded up here, it would mean the Arc would be coming shortly. Tho some have had flooded basements from melting snow and lots of rain, somehow we managed to not have a problem last year during the worst flood in our towns history.
