I just bought one from Bed Bath & Beyond because the one I had before this (which I had bought from Ebay, and was a different brand) got discolored after months of use. Plus, after a while of using it I could swear I could smell plastic - so I threw it out.

Although this one feels much thicker/sturdier I keep thinking about microwaving/reheating the plastic again and again. The box the product comes in does not say anything about the plastic it''s made from - but the BB&B website says it''s a "heat-resistant" plastic.

Does anybody know about anything this subject? I''m thinking of writing the company, but I don''t know what to ask - or if it''s something to worry about.

I''m confused - it sounds like it''s one that you use in the microwave? Not one that plugs in?

If you''re nervous about it, could you just get one of the plug in types? I don''t like constantly reheating things in plastic either, and I would be especially worried if it started to smell plastic-y!

I guess you could write the company and ask what type of plastic it is and then do some research on it.

Right - it''s the one you put in the microwave.

I''ve thought about the ones you plug in, but they''re so bulky...although I haven''t looked in a while. But maybe I should...I don''t want to have the plastic thing in the back of my mind every time I make rice (which is often).

I have a plastic one, I really like it. It's a put rice, add water, stick in microwave for twenty minutes deal, and I really like that the rice cooks but leaves the individual rice particles nice and separate, if that makes sense? Conventional plug-n-play cookers mush it all up more.

ETA: I make rice pretty often and i've been using it for a year, no smells or strange colouring or anything. Maybe I'm getting lucky, or the water around here is better for this or something?

yssie, I agree - the rice comes out GREAT in the plastic microwave cookers. And I make rice at least once a week, too.

I''ve owned two plastic rice cookers - the first one I ever had never smelled funny - but after a while it became discolored/ugly so I wanted to replace it. It the one I replaced it with, the one I bought from Ebay, that gave me the creeps after a few uses.

I just sent an email to the company asking for the type of plastic (thanks elrohwen).

Huh, I didn''t know they had microwavable ones! I have 2 of the plug-ins. A mini one for two and a monster one for big meals. I''ve never had a problems with them. You know I would write the company or check with the better business bureau for product issues.

FWIW, I have a really little plug-in-play cooker that does a great job! No mushiness. I didn''t even know they made ones for the microwave

we don''t even have a rice cooker. i was taught by my mom using a glass pot when i was 10 yrs old.

The one I had was from walmart, been using it for over five years now, once a week at least, still no problem.

Thats ok. I just have a tendency to get too many things going at once and cleaning burnt rice from the bottom of a pot is no fun. So, plug-in cooker it is!
