Anyone had an iPhone and switched to a different phone?

I''m just so torn. I love my iPhone. But I hate AT&T soooo much. I had a 40 min conversation with my mom today and didn''t get disconnected and I was SHOCKED.

I''m so so hoping that the iPhone comes to Verizon this summer. If it does, I am totally switching ASAP!
 
As you know, my husband has a Motorola Droid, and I have the BB Curve 5280. We just switched from TMobile and there I had the BB Curve 5800 (I think). The tmob curve was SO FREAKING slow, so being on Verizon''s 3G network sped that up, and I actually use it for the internet again. I don''t have the iphone, and I''ve never really used one for more than just poking at it, but I''m wondering if you have any friends that have the Moto Droid so you can play with it for a bit. Do you have a Best Buy close by? We went to ours and the sales guy had the Moto Droid so the hubs could play with it and see how it worked before actually purchasing it. (Granted the guy was an ex-student of D''s, but whatever). I think that the Moto Droid or the HTC Incredible is probably most like the iphone, but I prefer the BBs because I like to push buttons. I do like that D has the little keyboard, but I absolutely loathe the touch screens, so it was BB for me all the way.

Do other AT&T phones get better reception than the iPhone. Honestly, the only thing I would even consider is adding a line with a cheap-o phone for calling and using my iPhone for everything else. I really don''t use the phone function of my iPhone, though, so I might be colored by that--plus reception is excellent in my neck of the woods. That being said, though, I cannot even think of a metaphor that would parallel how I feel about going from an iPhone to not-an-iPhone (which really and truly is the phone distinction).
 
Honestly, I love my iPhone. There are some things that do bug me - for instance, I liked that I could have my gchat running in the background all the time on my BB Curve (which I had before the iPhone). But I think the new iPhone, whenever it comes out, will some of that multi-tasking problem.

The biggest issue for me is that AT&T is just SO BAD. I lose signal in downtown Chicago. I barely use any of my minutes each month and I have tons of rollover because I use my BF''s phone for all my voice calls. I just want an iPhone on a good, reliable network that I can actually utilize, y''know?

But the device itself is great, and I should really stop thinking the grass is greener

I have to remind myself - when I was abroad for vacation a couple months ago, I was able to place calls on my iPhone using Skype and Wi-fi. And I can read my Kindle, and browse Wiki, and listen to music. Grass. Is. Not. Greener.

I love my iphone (3GS), and fortunately where I live (Boston) I have very few dropped calls. I am also on campus all the time so I am able to use my school''s wifi, which is faster than 3G.

I honestly haven''t met anyone who has given up an iphone for another phone and been genuinely excited about it and happier with the new phone. I am in business school, and at the start of the year they did a poll - 50% of the students have iphones. My guess is that the other half have blackberries left over from their previous jobs. If you want a smart-phone, iphone is second-to-none. If you just want a phone to make calls, there are plenty of those. Perhaps you could do a basic phone + ipod touch? (assuming you have wifi).

I think it would take some really BAD service for me to ever switch to a non-iphone.

To answer Katmari''s question, it isn''t every phone on AT&T''s network that has crappy coverage. I have always found it odd that my daughter will get frustrated when she doesn''t have a signal and she has to use my phone to make a call. We both have AT&T, she has an iphone and I have a 10-yr old Nokia (which I am finally upgrading after our 10-yr anniversary, but am keeping it around with my new iphone for backup)

My phone doesn''t surf the web and is a basic dinosaur, but it can make a call anytime and anywhere. So, I really think it''s the combination of the iphone and AT&T that causes the problems. My SIL has a BB for work and a personal iphone. The BB takes much better pictures and faster email, but overall, based on apps and use, he loves his iphone hands down.
 
If it makes any difference, according to my Consumer Behavior prof, Europeans only use Blackberries, and spot Americans because of the iphones. And not in a good way...

I have a Blackberry and I love it, BEG. I''ve never had an iPhone, although I come from a family of extreme Apple enthusiasts. My mom and sister have iPhones, and DH and I considered switching, but our service is just too good with Sprint to make the switch.

First, hey there!! Secondly, I agree with what you''re saying. It isn''t that AT&T has crappy coverage, it''s the combination of the phone and the data it consumes on the network.

I said this in another thread, but my DH uses a BlackBerry Bold and never drops a call and has excellent service and he works in NYC.
 
here in china you are a rockstar if you have an iphone - and at least 50% of the americans I know have them. We''re all rockstars! lol

I don''t think by europeans he can mean us Brits. I recently acquired my first I phone which I love and my friends teenagers are well impressed. It is the most desired smart phone here in the uk I would say, by a country mile. 

Hmmmm...can''t really confirm that based on observation (I am in Europe), but perhaps it''s a question of population subsets.

I'm not totally sure I understand what you're getting at here.

Is it that they have a problem with the actual act of Americans using iphones? (i.e. somehow more annoying than a blackberry)

Or does seeing someone with an iphone simply identify them as American, which activates other, already ingrained negative stereotypes?
 
I'm not implying anything, just stating what he told us. If I had to assume what he was implying from the rest of the lecture, I would say that it further exemplifies negative stereotypes. I.E. iphones are frivolous and more of a toy than a blackberry which is more dignified and business-like.

He had just been in the Netherlands on his most recent book tour/lecture tour and apparently they were using iphones as an (rather accurate) indication if a person was American.

I dunno.

ETA: For the record, he's an evolutionary psychologist that studies consumer behavior.
 
I sooo wanted an iPhone but refused to switch to AT&T from Verizon. I have the Droid Eris and I really like it, but its a tad slow. My fiance has the Motorola Droid and I definitely think it is the best phone that Verizon has. The only reason I didn''t get it is that it was more expensive and I just wanted the touch screen without the slide-out keyboard. I know that there is a new Android phone called the HTD Droid Incredible, which has good ratings, and it just has the touch screen. I really think Verizon''s only comparable option to the iPhone would be an Android phone. But that''s just me, and I know a ton of people love their Blackberry''s...
