Amberwaves, there is a brand called Blue Lizard you might want to look into. Here is their link. You can see if there is a retailer near you if not you can always purchase it at drugstore.com

Here's an article from today's Chicago Tribune about sunscreen and UVA/B rays. link

DeeJay thanks! I thought this note from the article was interesting.

"Being darker-skinned didn''t eliminate the risk: Substantial numbers of Hispanics, Asians and American Indians scorched in the sun, according to the CDC report. African-Americans also are affected, depending on their skin color and family history of skin cancer, it noted"

I am big on sun protection. For one thing, I wouldn''t want skin cancer, and try not to get burned. I do like to play in the sun, I just wear sun block. For another sun exposure = wrinkles. My mother is in her 60''s, and she constantly avoided the sun, and has no wrinkles what so ever. I am hoping I inherrited her good genes AND am following in her sun protection ways. Finally, having a sun burn just plain out sucks. Pardon the language, but there are few things worse than being sunburned on vacation. ICK.

HI:

While at the Derms the other day, I bought the La Roche-Posay Anthelios L sunscreen. Very happy! It contains Mexoryl and Parasol. Altho I will continue to buy Neutrogena and Ombrelle, this is a new favorite--I didn''t get red at all (it is 32 C today....) and I like the smell.......

cheers--Sharon

actually random note but in this month''s Elle there is an article on how some doctors are advocating more non-sunscreen sun exposure because apparently so many people are coming up Vitamin D deficient....and how it''s very controversial to be advocating more sun exposure sans sunscreen.

but apparently there have been some recent studies and they said that people who work in the sun or outside with more *consistent* sun exposure and not burning end up having less of a chance of skin cancers than those who stay out of the sun most of the time but then go out every once in a while and end up getting intense exposure aka on a vacation and maybe burning a few times....that those vacation/sunburners end up with higher risk.

they also talked about how we need sun to get enough VitD and all the supplements in our milk and other things are not enough to keep our bones as strong as they used to be. so they are recommending either sun exposure or like 1000 mg of VitD in pill form.

i''m still reading the article but i thought it was interesting!!

Hehehehehe Sharon, I have been singing the praises of La Roche Posay in several threads since I started on PS!!!! It has Mexoryl in it that fights UVA and UVB rays. Kudos Sharon. They weren''t selling it in the US but the FDA approved Mexoryl now. I would buy it from Canada.

HI:

heheee, sorry I missed your earlier threads, Miss Skippy--where did you buy it from? I knew about the FDA thing; and had been looking for it earlier this year, but just stumbled upon it at my Derms. But Shoppers Drug Mart carries it too.

cheers--Sharon

I bought it from the Skin Care Lab online. I have read so many articles and sort of became obssessed over the whole wrinkle cancer issue after watching 20/20 saying that Mexoryl needs to be approved to fight UVA/UVB rays. Here is the info from the program. Is it cheap through Shoppers Drug Mart??
I am glad the FDA finally approved it!!! Good news for the US. You lucky Canadian always had access to it!

HI:

Skippy--I paid $24/5 bucks at the Derms; and Shoppers Drug Mart sells it ranging from $20-26 (depending on the level of SPF) Can$. Now that certainly is "cheap" when you think of what it does, but is expensive compared to other products like Neutrogena and Ombrelle which tend to be "costlier"($12-17 Can$).....

cheers--Sharon

Sharon, I pay $25 and don''t mind because I completely agree w/you. Thanks!

yup, soooo true. Even though I have a medium skin tone and native american ancestry, I can still burn in the right conditions (FL, Mex, anywhere close enough to the equator or out west even). Living in the northern midwest I find I can be outdoors for about an hour sans sunscreen before I start to get any color but I still take precautions . I wear light colored tanks and shorts and use spf 15 on my face and chest and shoulders and 4 on the rest of my body.

Mara, I've read articles along the line of needing more Vit. D as well. However I checked the RDA guidelines for Vit. D and they only recommend I think 5 mg, or grams, as oppposed to something like protein which on average I think the RDA is like 60-70 (you would know more about that, I'm sure being on your protein kick right now, hee hee). So I'm thinking if a person who has very fair skin just gets outside for 15 minutes a day without sunscreen but isn't SITTING in the sun will get the RDA? And can't you find things that are fortified with Vit. D like soy milk, etc. if you don't drink milk or are lactose intoleranat or whatever? I wonder if people who don't get enough Vit. D are people who work night shifts and sleep during the daylight hours for the most part. Anyway I think it's a good idea to at least get some sort of sun exposure on a regular basis, once again I think it just makes you feel better on the whole as long as you're not overdoing it.

ETA: DH and I are attending a Nascar race at Chicagoland Speedway this Sunday and I already have my outfit planned as the weather calls for mostly sunny, high in the 80's...we plan on getting there around 9 a.m. to tailgate with a few of his buddies and the race doesn't start until 3, so I know we'll be in the sun alllllll day. I think I'm wearing white wide legged JC chinos and a washed peach AE polo, and I'm bringing my JC wide brimmed floppy straw hat. I have a feeling that if I wear shorts and a tank I'll forget to reapply sunscreen and end up scorched! I'm not taking any chances, my chest at 30 already has a ton of freckles that were not there ten years ago....I always thought I was freckle--less but no...

Also I will admit my choice of attire has a lot to do with not wanting to look like the typical Nascar female fan, sorry but I'm not into the halter top/daisydukes/no bra look. LOL!

actually monarch this article was saying that the items that are fortified with VitD do NOT give you enough to meet your body's requirements. and that there was also a test run or something where they checked a bunch of 'vitamin D fortified' milk products and less than half actually had VitD in them.

they mentioned also that you'd have to drink something like 20 glasses of fortified VitD glasses of milk to get the requirement amount of D.

part of the article also mentioned that some of the issue is that people are so freaked out about the sun and also that so many less people are working out in the sun like they used to in the old days. so many people are inside more often, working behind desks, etc. anyway kind of interesting...the article also did say it's very controversial for DR's to recommend to get sun without sunscreen kind of thing, but they were saying you only needed something like 30 min of sun per day and they also had a specific hour time to get it, like 11am-4pm or something.

i'll finish reading the article tonite but pretty interesting. i love the sun and i get a fair amount of it, with and without sunscreen, esp with my walking. they suggested for those who are really opposed to the sun to take 1000mg supplements per day. so i dunno about 5mg or 1000mg...but now i am curious for sure.

Here''s the chart of RDA''s I was referencing...now I realize I was reading it incorrectly. It says Vit. D recommendations in wg, which I think means whole grams? Not sure. Anyway, I bet you''re right Mara, we must need a lot more Vit. D than I or the average person originally thought! Thanks for the info about the fortified stuff, I took note of that.

I''ve always been a sun lover...I used to be a tanning bed fanatic but quit altogether last year. This summer i''ve been getting sun in slow doses, an hour here, an hour there at a time, which I feel is better. I actually got a little pink on my cheeks and nose and tops of my shoulders a couple weeks ago which was weird but I attribute that to staying indoors all winter and spring and not tanning at all. i just hit the big 3-0 so now I''m mainly worried over premature aging...i still love having some natural color though and will definitely get more sun this summer. I wish i lived in a state where I could get outside all year round just for a few minutes a day to soak up that Vit. D. I am convinced I have SAD but I''ve been too stubborn to see anyone about it, maybe this will be the year I do.

I have read about Vit D deficiency and it is a bad thing. I have even read articles connecting it to breast cancer. So if you avoid the sun you definitely need to supplement. I think Vit D3 is vey important. You can buy this as a supplement at Whole Foods. It''s from fish liver oil

. They make sure there is no mercury in it or anything toxic.

I believe that only a minimal exposure to sun is required daily to get your vit D through sunshine, but still, I know I don''t get it. I never go in the sun and I am so pale that I really don''t want to.
