One of our BBC channels is now showing this amazing series and I am absolutely addicted. I love the way it throws your emotion around in that some of the baddies are likeable ( I heart Stringer Bell) and the ''goodies'' are not always so likeable.

I am also curious to know how realistic it is?

Um, yeah, parts of Baltimore are that bad. Other parts are like any other city.

I grew up there.

Also, I have a cousin that was on the show in the later seasons.

I am sure there are places here in the UK as bad too - I lead a very sheltered life in a tiny village of 500 people.

Which particular season was your cousin in and which part did they play?

Chad Coleman aka ''Cutty'' Wise...

he''s the boxing coach... Seasons 4-6

Oh my god, he is a great character and the most delicious looking man - his eyes are mesmerising

cool! A good friend of mine was on that show too...he went on and starred in this yrs Transformers. So proud of him

I love the show - great stories and acting.

Definitely was one of the best shows on television.

By far one of the most well-written and well-acted shows on tv. So sad that it''s not around anymore but we still watch all the old episodes on demand. Fantastic show.

My DH has been Netflixing this - great show.

IMHO, the best show on TV ever. EVER. I went through a minor grieving process when it came to an end.

And oh lord, Trillionaire, Cutty was one of my favorite minor-ish characters.

Atroop, who did your friend play?

Whenever I spy an actor from the Wire on another TV show I go a little nuts. Law & Order is a pretty good bet. Apparently the actor who played Omar is about to be in a new series.

I''ve already told DH that we''re naming our next pet Bunk.

Love this show! It took me awhile to get into it, but throughly enjoyed it. I thought the second season was a bit off though. Didn''t tie in so much with the other seasons.

My friend played Renaldo...he went on to star in transformers and played Leo (the main characters roommate). He was in the entire movie...so happy for him

I LOVE HIM!!! That''s so cool!

And I am seriously, seriously addicted to this show...I''m on the last season now and am avoiding watching episodes because I don''t want it to end!

haha, Festy--we''re actually planning on doing a "The Wire" character movie retrospective when we''re done with the series! And I want to name my first born Bunk! (haha, not really, but...somewhere...deep inside...hehehe)

DH and I loved this show!! We never watched it when it was on, but went through all five seasons in the past couple of months. One of our fav characters is Omar!

He is totally my ''bad boy'' crush!

I also wanted to consider Omar for a boy''s name but DH nixed it. But then, he''s nixed every other "O" name I''ve come up with.

Anyhoo, Omar (the actor has a generic-sounding name that I can never remember) has a small role in what I think has to be one of the worst movies of all time, I Think I Love My Wife. It made me so sad that he''d gone from one of the best-written shows ever to that. But I guess a guy''s gotta work, and how many roles are out there for African Americans?

Huh, for some reason I''m drawing a blank on that character, but how incredibly awesome that he had a big role in Transformers!

Ooh, ooh, ooh! I do! I do! I love the dvd special features. Each season takes you through a different facet of corruption in the city. I think season 4 about the school system was my favorite. I have to go back and watch the dvds now. It''s going to be a Wire marathon weekend for me!

Isn''t Renaldo Omar''s boyfriend in the final two seasons?

What made the characters great was that they were all so complicated. They were all good and bad. I really thought that the way they ended the show did a great job of encapsulating the theme and message of the show. I heard several years ago that they were considering doing a prequel fiilm.

Agree with this post 150%.
Fi and I were totally addicted from the start, and we''ve just finished watching the final season (lil behind here in Aus).
Wow, what an incredible finale, and such a fine series overall.
I was so peeved that that skeevy reporter didn''t get his come-uppence, lol!

I agree also that alot of hot men in that show - gotta love McNulty despite what a dog he is

I''m with curlygirl, that the characters and story lines are some of the very best EVER on TV. I also love reading all the books from the various writers of the series.
Currently reading "Homicide - a life on the killing streets" by David Simon. "The Corner" was also awesome - it''s fun recognizing all the different characters from the show in the books.

Anyone who loves the show and is sad it''s over, the books will give you a great fix - read anything by George Pelecanos.

Trill, how interesting that your cousin played Cutty! - he was a great small part, you can let him know he has some die-hard fans in Australia, lol..

Thanks for starting this thread Samantha, glad to know so many others appreciate this fantastic work.

yes it was SO EXCITING for us all to see him in the transformers movie...and througout most of the movie too. It was even more exciting to see him interviewed on the red carpet and he took along his mom and 2 of his sisters.

here's a link to his pic

Arjuna, YES! Great reading suggestions! I''ve read a couple of Richard Price''s books. One of his early ones, Clockers, has a scene that is straight out of The Wire. Actually, it''s the other way around b/c his book came first.

Atroop, oh of course, Renaldo! Glad he didn''t have the same fate as Brandon.

About 6 months ago a new cop show came out that was being compared (by whom I don''t know) to some of the greats. The NYT review tore it apart b/c it stole a scene from The Wire and got it totally wrong. Remember the scene where the cops convince some young thug that the Xerox machine is a lie detector? Apparently in this new show they recreated that scene, except the kid was from a priveleged/middle class background. The reviewer made the point that the reason it worked in The Wire is that a kid from the projects has no idea what a Xerox machine is. Pathetic isn''t it? I don''t the shoe lasted, whatever it was.

I''ve gone to see my cousin''s plays and watched him in tiny roles for most of my life, and we were all so proud of him when he got the role on ''The Wire''. Not a huge role, but significant, you know? I am still hoping that it will create some big opportunities for him down the line.

Most recently, he was on Broadway in "Joe Turner''s Come and Gone", which got a few Tony''s. It got a lot of recognition when the Obama''s went to see it, and thankfully my family saw it before they did, because all the shows sold out post-Obama, lol. We got to go back stage and meet the cast and catch drinks with him (my cousin), which was nice, being that he so was exhausted!

I will definitely share everyone''s praise with him, he will be thrilled!
