i.e. - have a fear of clowns?

i''ve read that it''s common, but most people don''t get it i tell them that i don''t like clowns. the only other person i know that suffers from this is BF''s younger brother, so he commiserates with me.

i won''t say that i''m terrified, but i do find most of them disturbing. i believe it started when i met a Ronald McDonald when i was about 3 years old, and seeing the movie "It" and "Killer Clowns from Outer Space" pretty much sealed the deal for me.

anyone else not the biggest fan of Bozo (*shudder*) or is it just me?

Yes. Clowns are awful. They just look very alarming. I think The Joker is the scariest villain of all time.

I would not say I''m phobic, because I don''t go running from them when I see them. However, I definitely do not enjoy them, and they certainly creep me out!

I seem to have more fear of the word...coulrophobic

What a whopper to wake up too this morning!

I really don''t like clowns. They freak me out but I am not phobic. I don''t understand their appeal at all

Same here. I''m not afraid of them, but I don''t find them the least bit funny. Just creepy and kind of ridiculous.

Sorry, vip!!! I really didn''t mean to induce corner-rocking!

Remember The Bozo Show? It was filmed in Philly years ago, and I actually got picked to play a game on it. On TV. And scared of Bozo. I won an Etch-a-Sketch.

I wouldn''t call myself phobic, but I don''t like clowns at all. I don''t think they''re funny and many of them are creepy.

I HATE CLOWNS!!!! To the point of not even going to circuses. I''m not sure when it started, but I remember having a stuffed clown as a kid and thinking it was moving around at night while I was asleep or trying to go to sleep. Then I read Stephen King''s IT and it was all over for me...

I read Stephen King''s IT at 11 years old - I am certain that was a bad idea! Clowns creep me out - I''m not terrified of them, but I have general problems with anyone who doesn''t look like themselves (i.e., is wearing freaky make-up or a mask) - sometimes I even find it difficult to speak to someone wearing sunglasses - I think I''m a little weird :)

Stephen King''s IT has a lot to do with my dislike of clowns.

I too HATE clowns!

WOW I didn''t know there was a name for it.
I have had this discussion with many people and not one has said they liked clowns.
My dislike goes all the way back to Clarabelle on Howdy Doody and he was fairly benign.

What made things difficult as an adult on was that my aunt WAS a clown in her later years. We lived on opposite sides of the country and when we received Christmas cards or other family pictures there she was in full clown regalia. It''s not something a person forgets
easily.

I was very scared of clowns when I was younger. I think I got over the phobia when I was in college, but to this day I still find them creepy and would prefer not to be stuck in an elevator with one, for example.

Or packed into a car with several.

Oh I just flipped my hand up in front of my eyes and swore-that clown more than any in my whole life freaks me out. He makes my scalp and the back of my neck crawl and makes that awful wind in the ears sound in my head. Ugh. I love SK but sometimes I''d like to meet him and give him a swift kick to the shin for Pennywise. We all float down here...

My grampa and gramma took me to the circus when I was..3 or 4..I was little. And there was a clown that just kept being IN my face and would NOT quit, and that was it for me. A lot of it depends on the clown, for me..some of them just have a creepy look to them. I''m not going to pass out or anything, but they might make my heart jump and I have to close my eyes and take deep breaths and find my happy place.

Clowns have never bothered me, but for some reason someone once gave me a little doll that was in a dress, but had a painted clown face. She sat up on her own, and had a little wind-up in the back to play music - AND ROTATE HER HEAD. That was the scariest damn thing ever.

There''s a song I liked by Mudvayne (sp?) a few years ago and I happened to catch the video, and I had to turn the channel. I don''t dig masks. It''s too Jason/Michael Meyers for me.

I''m not afraid of clowns, was even an assistant for one at a fair. But sometimes the vibe from the person behind the makeup can get to me (like what are they really thinking) But it seems that everyone I know either doesn''t like them or are terrified of them. One walked up behind my sister at an amusement park, just to hand her a balloon and sacred the you-know-what out of her.

I didn''t know this about a friend of mine. When I still lived at home, I painted the walls in my room a very deep purple. I also have a collection of Harlequin clown masks, 12 of them. She came over to my house once to borrow something from me when I was not home. From what my dad said at the time, she walked in saw the masks on the wall in sunset lighting and ran out of the house screaming. She never came back to my house. She won''t visit me now either.

It''s not severe, but clowns freak me out. I really don''t like the feeling of their hands through those white gloves... Makes me think a clown doll has come to life. I know it''s a weird thing, but I seriously get ice cubes in my stomach when I shake someones hand and they are wearing gloves, it reminds me of the creepy clowns from Poltergeist and It.

Before I read this thread, I just thought clowns were creepy. After having given thought to being stuck in an elevator with one....

We totally had a convo about our mutual dread of Pennywise once

oh. my. god! yeah, i''m not the biggest fan of dolls/marionettes either but they''re not all bad. my best friend from childhood had a grandmother who collected dolls. most of them were very pretty actually, but she had a few antique ones that just gave me the creeps.

DH hates dolls, oh yeah, his family is known for porcelain dolls.

I hate clowns. My aunt made a toy that was supposed to hang from my light in my childhood room. Parents took awhile to realize why I never slept at night...
