I have just been made a job offer in KC. Aside from the obvious (like working out the details of the JOB :cheeky: ) I wonder if there are any kindered spirits (a.k.a., PSers!!!) in that neck of the woods.

:wavey:

Unfortunately I'm no longer in town, but I'd love to move back! It's my goal to move home to Missouri. We moved away last year for a job. KC is a great place to live! I think it's really pretty underrated. Even though I don't live there currently, I'm happy to answer questions if you have them. :)

woah!! That will be a big change for you! I'm assuming this is a great thing though??

Merilenda, I am leaning toward living in the Country Club Plaza area. I also thought about the Power and Light District, but from what I hear there isn't a lot really going on there at night unless there is an event, so the Plaza seems like a better choice.

Mrs. S., it is a really interesting opportunity with a lot of upside potential. Of course with that upside comes the potential for downside in a number of ways based on their business model and size (i.e., they are a good acquisition target), so everything has to be considered. I also have a very generous offer on the table right now from a company in Pittsburgh, but I don't think it would be nearly as interesting. Frankly, it's a role in a big blue blood organization that has just screams "land of the middle agend white men" (and no disrespect to middle agend white men--I happen to be very fond of that particular group of people--but you know what I mean). So, all in all, I would rather go work with some folks with a bit of a cowboy mentality and take my chances than sit back in a nice cushy corner office and wait for retirement to roll around.

Dee*Jay, congrats on the new gig!

DH is from the Kansas City area, and we got married in Country Club Plaza at Unity Temple. That's hands down my favorite area of the city!

We debated for months about whether to move back there to to my hometown in Michigan for months before deciding on Michigan (mostly due to the lifestyle we want to live and share with our future (hopefully!) children). It was definitely a hard choice to not head back to KC, but there are definitely tons of things to do and see, and the city is undergoing some great revival right now.

Country Club Plaza is a nice area in the MO side. I have lived in Pittsburgh, and while it's fine and QUITE similar to here peoplewise etc, it's definitely very blue collar in most parts of the area. I do miss some things about it since for example, STL doesn't have a damn Ikea yet, which is just blasphemy.

I will say that if you're in Chicago now, either would be a huge "shopping step down" for you. lol

vc, I really can't even think of any other area I might want to live...? If you have suggestions, I'm totally open though!

ame, having grown up in Pittsburgh I know totally what you mean about the blue collar-ness. As for lack of good shopping--that *could* be a blessing in disguise!

D*J, I really can't think of any if you want to live in the city proper! We had been looking for real estate in Overland Park, Kansas, but that's because hubby needs land and lots of space between him and his neighbors. (Condo living in Metro DC has NOT been his idea of the high life, and he's SO ready to get out!)

There's a Burberry store in CCP and a few other high-end boutiques, so it's not as "pedestrian" as it may seem! A few of my favorite authors/personalities have also done readings/appearances in CCP recently (Jennifer Weiner, Alton Brown, and Tim Gunn) so it's certainly a relatively popular pop-culture destination! As for the rest of the city, the Zoo's Africa exhibit is amazing, the new Performing Art Center is gorgeous, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art has some fabulous works to check out. Also, the Arabia Steamboat Museum is pretty cool, and the Lamb Ribs, Beef Burnt Ends, and Baked Beans at Fiorella's Jack Stack BBQ are TO DIE FOR.

I grew up in KC and briefly thought about moving back after college. In fact, I did move back for 6 months and rented in Lee's Summit.

Are you set on living in the city? My best friend has lived in the plaza area for years (just bought a house) and loves it. If I were going to buy a house in the KC proper, I'd probably opt to live in Brookside. The homes there have more character than the surrounding suburbs (many built in the early 1900's).

The only issue with living in KC proper is the schools. You'd have to send any school-aged kids to private. If schools are a consideration, Overland Park or Lee's Summit generally have the best.

vc and NEL, I'm not really a *house* person. I have no interest in shoveling snow, cleaning gutters, dealing with basement flooding, or anything like that. In a lot of metro areas (like Chicago) that would make things easier because there are a ton of condos available downtown, but in some areas (like KC) it's hard because there doesn't seem to be a genuinely urban living scenario that appeals to me. Pittsburgh poses the same problem.

The question I always ask of my own real estate clients when they are considering buying a propery is, "It's 7:30 on a Tuesday night in the spring. You walk out your front door. Where ya goin'?" I think that's a very valid think to ask, and I need to be able to answer it myself in whatever place I end up. If the answer is "I'm going to my car because there is nothing I can walk to"... well... that doesn't work for me.

CCP would be my pick, if you wanted suburban, I'd agree with Overland Park. It's a very nice suburb. We had clients up there, I used to love going. lol

The CCP area has nice shopping for the most part, but it's not Chicago! It would to me be a stepup in some ways from here though. But like you said, not necessarily a bad thing!

Pgh was nice enough, I liked it while I was there, I still go back and visit from time to time, though admittedly I usually fly into Cleveland and rent a car bec it's way cheaper. I felt like a snob a lot of times there, which is odd bec STL is pretty much 50-50 on Blue Collar to White Collar, it was more like 75-25 there. I lived in Zelie/Cranberry/Wexford while I was there, and often took myself to Ross Park, Shadyside, etc. for shopping despite often cussing my face off on Mcknightmare. They had Sephora long before we ever did in STL. Robinson was a lot nicer last time I was there than it was when I lived there, though Ikea is just as swell.

I grew up in Overland Park, KS and LOVED it. I would also suggest the CCP. There are alot of condos/apartments there or even the West Plaza area that are within walking distance. There are a lot of jewelry stores in that area too! :naughty:

I worked on the Plaza and lived in that area for many years, so if there is anything specific you want to know I'll try to answer it.

Also, what area would your job be in? Do you want to be within walking distance to shops and resturants?

Where will your job be? I think that would be the deciding factor in what area to live in for me. I lived in the Northland, and I loved it. It's built up a lot, and I honestly never had to go south of the river. Lots of restaurants, shopping, etc. And it still only took me 10 minutes to get downtown from my house. But I guess it depends somewhat on your lifestyle.

The Plaza is nice, as is Brookside if you want to live in the city. You could definitely get a condo/apartment in that area and be walking distance from a lot of things. The OP area on the Kansas side is very suburban (i.e. you probably need to drive to go anywhere). Many big, cookie cutter type houses. I personally would not live there, but most of my KC-area friends live in that area. As far as the Northland, I think there are apartments around Zona Rosa. You would have a concentrated area of shops and restaurants to walk to, but it's a little further from downtown.

Obviously don't live there DJ, but my work's national office is nearby and so I go sometimes!!

Will you be there by JCK? I have to go to KC the week after.

Congratulatins on the new endeavor, DJ! Enjoy exploring your new home and settling in!

Congratulations, Dee Jay! It sounds like there will be a lot of new opportunities and adventures for you.

Thanks vc, onefifty, ame, Mrs. S., Skippy, neat, kimmie, and zoe, merilenda and NEL!

I spent Saturday looking at corporate housing and picked a place right downtown because I figure it’s good to be close to work in the beginning and I can spend the next 90 days looking for where I want to be longer term (most likely the Plaza).

KC seems so *small* though…! As I was driving into the city on Saturday morning I saw the skyline and was like, WOAH. Where’s the REST of it?!? :o

Neat - I will be down there from June 16 on, so send me an email and we'll connect if the timing works for you!

 Yea that's about right! Compared to Chicago, it's tiny! But Pittsburgh seems to have a nice skyline, with the bridges and all.
