My friend is graduating from our doctoral program - I''m not in the graduation, only a spectator unfortunately -

Anyways...he''s about 48 years old, single, he is a director of a program at a college, he is very traditional, very conservative. He emails me a lot - we are completely different but I thnk he still stays in contact with me because of my sense of humor (ok, I feel really guilty because I just emailed him a funny "play dead" video about a dog on the Tonight Show and his uncle died a few days ago - UNBELIEVABLY insensitive - I just emailed him to apologize because it totally slipped my mind!) and I just don''t have any idea what to give him...that won''t cost a fortune.

I''m thinking the most $50.

Any suggestions? Please!!! Thanks!

Maybe take a picture of him at the ceremony and frame it?

That''s a good idea - I like that.

What are his interests? Recent gifts to my male friends include Lego, a shoulder bag for work, DVDs of stuff they remember fondly - like transformers episodes from the 1980s, or kitchen equipment.

a nice bottle of port never hurt anyone of the conservative, academic variety. i agree with the photo + frame idea, but might try to do that for, say, $20, then add the bottle of port. very professorial.... :)

I like Whitby''s idea of classy liquor - do you know what/if he drinks? A single malt is always a nice option for Scotch drinkers as well...

lol - i''m just picturing scotch and slippers and an open fire with a copy of some literary classic on his lap....

i could enjoy that life myself!

I think he drinks on occasions... yes, very conservative person, very... he does talk to me about classic movies he likes. He isn''t the very masculine type either. I like these suggestions...

What do you think of this - too cheesy? I''ll take some pics of him and then later put them in the cube?

I think he would love it!
