Anne Frank would have been 80 years old today.

She was given her diary on her 13th birthday so it is an anniversary of sorts for her book as well.

I assume you all have read it, perhaps this is a chance to share it with a young person. I wonder what she would have been like as an adult.

"I keep my ideals, because in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart." AF age 14

Bless her.

I am beyond words on this.

The things that have gone on in this world . . .

Swimmer, thank you for posting this. I first read her diary in the second grade, and I still reread it on occasion to remind me to keep hope even in the face of adversity. She was such a remarkable young lady, and she will always inspire me!

Its still hard to digest!

I dont know how she would have been like..., but with modern technology we might get a sense how she would look like these days (if she and 6,000,000 others would have been allowed to live their lives

"_____ Birthday Anna...."

Thank you for posting that Swimmer - I remembered it was her birthday (I loved the book), but didn''t know it would have been her 80th.

I pray that we will all remember lessons from the past.

I got to walk through her house in Amsterdam in April. The air in that house is saturated with dispair. There are hopeful moments (like when you pass the wall Anne decorated with pictures of movie stars), but they''re bittersweet. No matter how optimistic she was, you know what happened.

Thank God we''ve got things like her diary, though. I can''t put into words how important I think it is.

An important day to remember. I might have to go find a copy of her book to read this weekend. I think I will...

2nd grade seems extremely young to read Anne's book! My son is finishing up his second year and I could not possibly expose him to that at such a young age. He asks too many questions.

My great grandfather died at Auschwitz and because of that, when my kids are older, I would want to fill them in on the entire picture.

So sad.

I was going to say I was reading all of that around the same age (Anne Frank, Alicia: My Story, Number the Stars), but given your family''s connection to it, I''d probably put off explaining it to my child as well.

I will say it was heartwarming to see parents bringing their small children to her house and really explaining what it meant. Watching the kids react and learn and really really let it sink it made me more optimistic than anything else in there.

Thank you for posting that article/photo Diagem. I forwarded it to the fourth grade teachers in my district, technically it is recommended for grades 5-8, but it is in the curriculum for many states in 3rd or 4th grades.

Number the Stars is a great book for younger children if you are looking for a way to introduce the topic and there are books on the topic for even those who too young to read. My grandfather was a survivor. My grandmother did not survive the death march. DH''s grandparents are also survivors and yes, it really impacts all subsequent generations. It is hard to imagine that by the time I retire from teaching all of the survivors will no longer be with us.

Anyone that would like to read the book, you can read it online here:

I never come to hangout, but I saw this, and I wanted to remark on how much of an impact this young girl had on so many she never knew. Just beyond words, and in tears, especially this week with the Holocaust Memorial shooting in DC.

Let us never forget.

I visted the house last september it is really a somber place, I remember reading her diary as a child at a little younger then she was sad, sad story.

Happy (late) birthday Ms. Frank!
