Walter Cronkite has passed away.

I saw him speak a couple years ago, and while he was obviously frail and had a couple stumbles, he was still so charismatic. He certainly saw a lot in his long lifetime.

I find it . . . interesting. . . and revealing . . . that you posted this hours ago, and you''ve had this little response.

And yet, we had threads that went on for days about Michael Jackson.

And someone here, maybe many someones, will actually believe that MJ was more. More of an icon. More worthy of the coverage. More important. More newsworthy and noteworthy. Just more.

I can''t think of a sadder commentary on our popular culture.

A lot of the posters here are too young to remember Walter Cronkite on TV. He retired in the early 80''s which was before a lot of them were born, much less watching the news. I remember watching him cover President Kennedy''s funeral. I was in school when the assassination took place so wouldn''t have been watching TV when he announced that he''d died, but I definitely remember his coverage of the funeral. And also the moon landing. My mother was more of a Huntley/Brinkley person but I preferred Cronkite, even as a kid.

i remember him getting teared up during the moon landing. When my brother was in Vietnam during the war,my whole family watched Walter Cronkite every night to hear what was happening during the war.He was like a family friend and I will miss him.

Oh, that''s so very sad.

My dad talked about him sometimes and obviously had a lot of respect for him.

so sad...I saw him last yr at the movie theater and was excited to see him since I remember seeing him on the news. I had to explain to my daughters that''s WALTER CRONKITE...and tell them that he was the most famous newsman ever. I didn''t dare go up to him but I did stare a lot (with a stupid grin on my face)

HollyS, I also wonder if it has something to do with the fact that Walter Cronkite was older and has been ill for some time, while Michael Jackson''s death came out of the blue. I think people react more to shocking incidents. It is sad, though. Technically, I''m one of those people who is "too young" to remember him, but I always knew his name and generally who he was. And when I heard him speak, I understood why my grandparents felt that the news had never been the same since he retired -- I think a lot of people felt the way jewelerman does.

There was a great piece on him on CBS Sunday Morning today (I love that show). It was really wonderful to watch his career unfold in snippets. The image of a father coming home from work, sitting in front of the TV and watching Mr. Cronkite played through my mind as I watched.

Holly, I understand what you are saying, absolutely, and I agree with you regarding the current state of interest, but as an almost 32 year old, I am too young to remember Walter Cronkite on the news. I am not devestated by his death, he was 92 and lived a full life, but I am saddened that one of our most prominent journalists, and all the knowledge he gained throughout his career, is gone.

He was a friend of the owner of a hotel I used to managed, it was our off season, and he had lunch with the owner, came up to the counter and just chatted with me, very curious as to where I was from. He was a very pleasant and kind man, not at all too intimidating to chat with, very Kind.
