what did you do with your old diamonds/gemstones?

The first piece of jewellery DH ever bought me was a pair of earrings from Peoples Jewellers many many years ago. Even though they weren't expensive, I know he worked really hard to save up for them so that I would have one piece of jewellery from him for our first Christmas as a married couple.

I recently bought several pairs of earrings (another pair of danglies and a pair of martinis) and now I don't know what to do with the original pair that DH bought me, now that I actually have the luxury of choosing which earrings I want to wear each day. They're not good quality, are kind of yellow, and not that sparkly... The setting is 14K, but the gold is tarnished now (I wore these for over 10 years)... I don't think they would be worth anything, but they do have a lot of sentimental value to me.

The earrings on the left are DH's, the ones on the right are 0.50 ctw F SI2 ideal cut.

Any suggestions on what to do with them? I'm not sure if I just want them to sit in a box...

Personally I would leave them in their box and put them away to give to your first daughter one day. Other than sell them I'm not really sure what you could do with them. Sorry I'm not very imaginative ::)

What about getting them recut? And then set them into something else, like a DBTY bracelet or necklace? Otherwise, I like HOT's idea of saving them for a daughter/niece.

That's a really sweet story - I can see why they're precious to you! But I can also see why you might reach for the new pieces more often.

I think HOT's idea of saving them for a child is a good one. Alternately ... why not contact somebody like Julia Kay Taylor, or one of the other creative Etsy designers who produce the more innovative designs, and see what she could do with your birthstone and your husbands, using these diamonds as accent pieces? Or ... does your husband wear cufflinks? I like the idea of passing them back and forth and doubling down on the heirloom quality that much more ....

Thank you for replying Hawaiianorangetree, Thing2of2, and Circe :)

I like the idea of saving them for a future daughter/niece.
The thought of having them recut didn't really cross my mind before because I was thinking that it wouldn't be worth it and they could end up quite small (will they even do it for 0.25 cts?), but I could look into getting them repolished to maybe get them to sparkle a bit more. It won't change the colour though :wink2: The gemstones I've seen in the jewellery case at Costco aren't as sparkly as ideal diamonds, so maybe it'll work with these (and hide some of the yellow at the same time) in a ring?

DH doesn't wear cuff links. He doesn't believe in accessories... I bought him a nice watch and he doesn't wear it at all.

Thank you for the suggestions. I really appreciate it :D
