A Social Experiment, Brought to you by Heineken

I really enjoyed that, Monnie. I will have to watch it again to "get it" more completely, but I loved it. Thank you.

Wow, after they watched the movie and the woman sat down and the guy walked away, I was freakin sad for a minute. Glad he was only kidding.

Very powerful video, these days it seems that people don't attempt to listen to the other point of view, so then there isn't a chance to exchange ideas. Of course a beer doesn't hurt either

Thanks for sharing this Monarch!

I loved this Monarch. It actually gave me chills towards the end. I love any "story" about unlikely friendships of any type. I think that often, if we allow ourselves to really "see" other people, that we really will realize that we have more in common than what separates us.

I don't know that it's easy to overlook that Heineken is a corporation? They aren't some little microbrewery making craft beer in a garage somewhere which I thought was pretty well known. I maybe shouldn't have mentioned Heineken in the thread title? Or ?

Sorry; I was sharing a video that I thought demonstrated humans who didn't know a thing about each other working together to build something tangible, then getting to know each other without preconceived notions. Subliminal messages aside, this ad in no way made me want to go out and buy beer, or drink Heineken for that matter. Does Heineken know their target is socially aware? It's obvious. Did DeBeers carefully curate and build up a decades-long ad campaign to make diamonds seem valuable? Uhhh...they're basically the reason this site exists.

Great post, Monnie. I don't drink alcohol at all. I actually felt a bit repulsed when they started to drink the beer. I'm not sure why, since I used to love beer in my drinking days. (Although my favorite was margaritas.) But I still loved the video.

Again: than you for sharing!

I liked the ad. I have a daughter in advertising. She tells us that if we don't "get" an ad or even understand what it's for, then we are not the target audience. Kind of ticks me off, but I guess being over 50, I'm really not the target for a lot of ads out there.

I've spent 11 years, here, on a board with people I've never met. Yet I know them. And in the past two years...maybe even better than ever. This is our social experiment-- our water cooler.
Or beer cooler.

You know my focus wasn't on the advertising but the message. My DH can't watch a movie without trying to figure it out, he has to figure out magic tricks, there is a guy on FB that posts videos with number tricks, he gets so upset because it's just for fun but he can't just enjoy it at face value. As opposed to me who takes things at face value, takes it for what it is and just enjoys it.

So not everyone will view it the same, that's part of the human experience but I throughly appreciated you sharing this Monarch.

Hi,

We need something uplifting in todays world. The ad is good and makes a statement.

Annette

This was awesome! Thank you for posting. If someone takes something negative from this be it Heineken as a corporation or pandering then I pity them for their outlook. I agree with everyone who saw the positive in this video.
Edited to be a bit nicer.

Darn! I'm really sorry I missed the less nice version. (As long as it wasn't so not nice as to get you in trouble, that is. <wink>.)

I just want to make it clear to Telephone that I'm not intending to be rude--Telephone, I hope you aren't taking my or some of the other comments that way. When I read the Guardian piece you posted, my hackles immediately went up because the author was just SO over-the-top one-sided and anti-corporation branding and marketing with regard to exploiting social issues. What I posted in response to YOUR words was kind of "well, yeah...that's pretty obvious." I didn't do a great job of separating my reactions to your words and the author's and I'm sorry about that if there is any confusion.

Ok, just wanted to clarify! Carry on!

No of course not! I just haven't been back on haha. I don't think it was rude, nor do I fault you for posting it or mentioning the company!

I'm just jaded and cynical. It's a nice video yes, but having lived in the marketing world, it IS easy to forget these are corporations. Just knowing it's all scripted and fake bothers me haha. If it were real (and not an advert) I would feel 100% different! It would be nice if life were that simple. (like the pepsi campaign) I was following both with interest, and I thought the article provided a different (perhaps harshly worded and biased) perspective. But it's always good to see both sides IMO.

Lolol okay there. Feel free to "pity" me because I posted an article showing a different point of view.
You also don't need to edit out any bitchiness on my behalf. Don't worry, I'm a big girl ;)

That was awesome!

ETA: I didn't read the comments before I watched the video or posted my reaction. About the corporation thing... I am more interested in the people and the way they acted, reacted, and interacted with each other. I guess now I'm GLAD I didn't read the comments before I watched the video.

For some reason I thought you were a chemist!

I minored in Marketing and have always worked in some type of sales, branding, merchandising, and marketing throughout my career. And now I work for an advertising firm! I did get the sense that these were paid actors--while their reactions seemed genuine, it's pretty hard to pull randoms from the street and know the exact outcome so it should be kind of obvious (only to us, maybe.) But that pesky suspension of disbelief with which humans are equipped still allowed me to receive the message. I watched it twice, and I cried both times the guy who got up and pretended to storm out came back.

I've definitely gone through periods of cynicism. I'm not currently there and hope I never go back. I do appreciate the opposing perspective you provided. It is a good reminder to me not to let myself go there, as tempting as it may be given my mood on some days.

Thank you for posting Monnie. I loved this.

Monnie, the first time I watched it, I swore at the guy who got up and walked away! I was watching with my other daughter who is in a social worker type of job. So anger was my initial reaction just for the record. ETA: It's easy for me to suspend disbelief. I like to get to the gut feelings of things. :)

Chemist? Psh no, I'm not that smart haha!

*shrug* It's just part of who I am lol. Skeptical, cynical, always questioning. I'm glad you (and others) enjoyed it
