I'm planning to place a Sephora order today and need a little help!

I have not worn concealer in oh, a good 10 years. I probably should have been wearing concealer for a oh, a good 10 years. Right now, I am just using a powder foundation (mac studio-fix) or another brand that I do not recall the name of at the moment. I do not use any other base or prepartion for the foundation. Likewise, I do not want to use any type of prep for the concealer. So, I guess I want something quick, easy, effective and non-cakey for my 39 year old undereye skin. I also have VERY light skin, so shimmery does nothing for me.

Any recs? Thanks!!

I recently went to a makeup artist to have a makeup overhaul. I got lots of good advice and product recommendations. It was really nice bc she doesn't sell any products, so I didn't feel like I was getting a sales pitch the whole time. She recommended for me (I'm 38 and also don't like shimmery) YSL Touche Eclat under my eyes and anywhere I have redness, and also MAC Select Cover-Up. I have been really happy with those. I also use Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer and I think that I get good sheer coverage without looking too made up. For a brief moment in time I was using primer, but she thinks it is unnecessary (with the exception of using it under eyeshadow).

Joolz beat me to it-YSL Touche Eclat is fantastic as an undereye concealer! And I also use Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer (oil free). If I top it with Laura Mercier powder foundation I get a super flawless look. Most of the time I just use the foundation powder-too lazy for 2 steps. :cheeky:

Thanks, Joolz and Thing2. I am going to go with the very first shade No. 1, because I *think* I have pink undertones. Do you just use a touch of this stuff? I guess I'll figure it out when I get it. Hoping for the best!

Care to rec a blush? I usually just go with a drugstore cheapie brand, but feeling a little splurgey this morning. Is Nars worth it? Something without sparkle perhaps?

I will put the LM foundation powder on my list of things to get in the future. I've tried a few different powder foundations, but always find my way back to the mac SF, though I have never been completely happy with it.

Oh, I've got one more. What's a good glittery or shimmery body cream for someone who likes to tan? This is for a gift . . . maybe I should just stick with a coffee-inspired gift, lol. This is too hard to find.

I have EXTREMELY dark purple/red undereye circles and just discovered Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit...why oh why did it take me so long?!?

It is amazing. Very pigmented, emollient and includes a nice brightening powder that I lightly sweep on after with a small fluffy brush (anything stiff will streak). I apply a silicone primer underneath to avoid creases and make it last longer.

Here's the link. I checked the reviews on Makeup Alley and they are mixed, but it totally works for me! PS< I'm very pale too and the Porcelain color is perfect. They have a good return policy so I think it's worth it to check it out.

http://www.bobbibrowncosmetics.com/...ncealers/Creamy-Concealer-Kit/SS11/index.tmpl

ETA: other concealers I have tried are: MAC (all of them...yup), Estee Lauder Double Wear Concealer (pretty good, they make an Extra Light color too), a multitude of drugstore and mineral ones, Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage, Dior Skin Concealer, Skinfood Salmon Concealer and probably more that I can't think of right now!

When I want a very light base I mix half liquid foundation and half face lotion. It gives just enough tint to even out my skin tone, but not so much that it looks cakey. I use cheap-o brands from Target, so I can't help you with brands, but the method is great IMO.
My makeup prof in undergrad taught me to do this. (I was a tech theatre major.)

I'm pretty pale and I use the No. 1 shade. I was I think a NC-15 or NC-20 in MAC when I used it. I also used to use the Mac SF, but it was a bit too oily for my skin. The blush I really like is MAC though-the color is Fleur Power I think. It's nice and pink and goes well with my skin tone. The more bronze/brown colors look awful on me.

Totally going to try this shimmer! I just looked online and Sephora is out of the lightest color right now...might have to go in and get it. (I try to avoid going into Sephora stores because I end up buying too much stuff! :cheeky: )

I use bobbi brown on the odd occasion I actually put on make up.

LV: I just bought Bobbi Brown Cream Blush in pale pink. It looks bright but it quickly dissipates. Some days I go without blush, but never without bronzer. I am now using Nars Laguna bronzer and I think it looks really natural.

You might need a prep depending upon your skin. I'm turning 40 nxt week and wear clinique advanced concealer in matte light and it's very creamy - though, I'm not sure if it's sold at Sephora. I was in the store the other day and they didn't have it in there. But, the eye cream I use UNDER that concealer seems to be vitally important to how well the concealer blends. I use Clinique All About Eyes (not the rich formula, but the regular. It's at Sephora.com, just a bit under $30, but you can buy GWP ones on ebay for less).

Be careful w/Nars. A lot of their blushes have shimmer! TONS! It's not good for pores. Cargo has a great blush, but I've had it a few years and it's not on their site... looks like they quit carrying that brand. Ulta.com has some but not that one. Yikes...I am running low and planned to buy it again... ETA - the color of Cargo blush I have is Tonga. It's perfect. No shimmer but not ultra matte, either.

I use Laura Mercier concealer (the one in the round post that is more creamy, not the secret camouflage stuff in the square box - that one is more for random spots and marks on the face). Anyway, I have used it for years, it is totally awesome. Doesn't cake and covers well. I usually sweep my foundation brush over it after I am done applying foundation on my face, seems to make it hold longer. I also have touche eclat but it's not actually a concealer, it's more like a highlighter because of the stuff in it that reflects light. It's ok if you have very light circles but won't do the job otherwise and you will have to apply to much and it will cake quickly. It's best to highlight areas, like your nose, cupid's bow, right under your brow line etc... I do love the pen, I just don't use it as a full fledged concealer.

I use the Make Up Forever waterproof concealer... If my skin is really dry it looks cakey and needs moisturizer or primer under it, but if my skin is really dry, I'm using moisturizer anyway. It's the only thing I've used that effectively covers up my dark undereye circles AND stays put all day.

The porcelain? I just added it to my cart, though maybe I should get ivory? I think we have the same skintone. I *think* I have NC20 in MAC, but sometimes whoever is there rec's a different shade and I am never happy. In fact, if it's NC20 I used this morning, I think it's too yellow. I dunno. I have no patience for any of this stuff!

Thank you everyone for the replies! I think I am dropping the YSL for now (thanks Deia!) because I do need some pretty severe help! What I really need is some consistent sleep, ha!

No I would get porcelain-it sounds like we have similar skintone! The Mac stuff was a little too yellow for me. I could probably use more serious help myself...I just always have purple/red circles under my eyes.

So weird it's available again, I swear it wasn't when I looked earlier-I'm totally going to order it now for myself. We should compare notes when it comes in! :cheeky:

I think I may have to take a trip to Sephora today. All this makeup talk is making me want to buy things. Horrible enablers, the lot of you.

i have gone through a gazillion concealer over my lifetime and the best one I've found for "maturing" eyes is Hourglass. I always use a little eye cream before applying, but it's the only one that I've found that resists resting/caking in the fine lines around and under your eyes.

I also think it looks very natural, it lasts, it has never caused milia....like some I've used. It used to cost a lot more, and they have undergone one reformulation that irked the crap out of me because it affected the tone of the initial offerings. Anyway, they sell it at Sephora now, which is nice because I used to have to ask my friend who lives in Los Angeles to pick it up for me when she was coming to visit.

Good luck!

Aggggh, I am so indecisive! And, my computer is sooooo slow. I'm getting a new one at work. Bobbi Brown concealer duo was up on my screen when I left for an apptmt, and IT guy came to add my new monitor. Awesome.

Yeah, speaking of indecisive, when I left for my apptmt, I was like, Oh, I don't have huge black circles under my eyes, I should get the YLS. When I got back, I was like, oh.my.gosh, I totally need a more than YLS!! Anyway, looking up hourglass now, then hopefully placing an order soon. Also getting my beloved Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes, which is the ONLY mascara I can use without having an allergic reaction. Love that stuff.

Oh, I need a new laptop for home. Should I start a new thread about that? :cheeky: Talk about indecisive! So many different considerations/options! All I want is fast, cheap and will accept a photo card without having to use a separate device to link it to my computer (which is what I have to do with my current dell.)

Distracts - Tell us what you get!! :wavey:

HI:

I recommend samples where possible.

For example I love the YSL TE as others have, but for foundation, no thanks. Didn't care for Armani foundation either.

Presently I am using Nars concealer in their dial-up stick. Excellent coverage. And I liked Laura Mercer in the pot: but would you like it? Not sure.

I no longer buy make up-products without a trial--too many misses to waste my $$. Good luck!

cheers--Sharon

HUGE vote for Laura Mercier all around! :) Foundation Powder gives me fantastic skin! The concealer is great too. Plus, I love her cake eyeliner that you put on with a brush - so easy and natural looking.

This is wise advice, Sharon! Thank you. When I went thru check-out, they offered a YSL TE sample! I was so happy because I'll be able to try it anyway. Do you order samples from a particular company? Or, do you just pick them up here and there when placing orders on-line?

Thing2, A few more questions for you if you pop back in! Do you use the lightest shade of the LM foundation powder? Haven't looked at those yet, but figured I would just ask you! Also, have you ever had luck with the MakeUp Forever HD powder or the like? I've tried to use it, but find it produces a ghostly effect on my light skin. Perhaps I use too much?

HI:

LV, I shop F 2 F. Places where they have you in their database often send out samples, or where the samples are too large to mail, you the the card in the mail asking to....come get a sample....I jsut did this for Estee Lauder and sampled their new super duper line  , and now I want to buy it!

Otherwise I just go to the counter and ask. You'd be surprised how obliging they are--and samples are great travel sizes!!. BTW, I do this for fragrance and face creme, serums, the whole gamut!

cheers--Sharon

I do use the lightest shade of the LM foundation powder. I also use the lightest shade of the tinted moisturizer. I've never tried MakeUp Forever, actually. I'm pretty lazy about makeup and just use whatever gets recommended to me that works. My girlfriend raved about LM so I got it and now I'm in love. Hopefully the Bobbi Brown concealer will be awesome too! :cheeky:

I see that you are exploring the more luxury type makeup brands in this thread (I love makeup, and high quality makeup, it's true).

But.... I wonder if you have Rimmel over where you are?

Rimmel is one of the cheapest brands out there, and if you are looking at skimping (praps because you want a swag of stuff, or saving up for bing *cough*) I wanted to say that I have been pleasantly surprised by their quality in the past. I have used their thicker concealer for under-eye (the one that comes in a lipstick type tube).

Max Factor eyeshadows also seem to have 'lasted the distance' on me.

And while I don't really like the Maybelline mascaras generally, I have really enjoyed their 'stilleto' brand of mascara...lots of natural looking length, not so much volume, and no clumping!!!
