Saturday night I got into a cab with my purse and some bags, df had paid the fare so when I got out of the cab, I didn''t realize I didn''t have my purse anymore! So, cell phone, wallet, ID, glasses etc...plus a bunch of checks (sole proprietor, had problem at bank and didn''t deposit) and other misc. stuff.

We had the cab # (always get a receipt!) and called 311. Basically assumed it a wash, but was very upset about the loss of income plus general stuff above. Well, I went to the bank this morning to transfer my checking account at 9:15am. I came home by 9:45am and there was a package on my doorstep.

Someone left my purse and personal items in a brown paper bag. So, the irreplaceable stuff was returned and the hard to steal with a purpose. The left the checks, took about $200 in cash, a $20 subway pass, $5 CVS bucks and some free movie tickets.

My guess is that whoever returned it either found it empty and decided to play the good samaritan or helped themselves to a reward.

Overall I''m just as happy to have the rest of it back.

Mayachel - I''m voting for the first part, they probably found it empty, but how wonderful to get that much back!!

I''m glad people are so thoughtful!

It must be such a relief to have all the peices of your life back.

I''d say the "delivery fee" was totaly worth it.

I too hope they found it empty and played good samaritan.

You must be so relieved!

whew! so glad you got your stuff... well most of it back. We found two wallets in one week once ( in shopping carts!). Both times we found them, drove to the person''s house (hoping they didn'' change their address or anything) and it was nearby our house so it wasn''t out of the way -though looking back, it would have been a little scary on the receiving end

. Both of them tried to pay us! we''re like no way! Love it when there is still honest people out there

for the most part anyways

I''d expect no less from a PSer. They were lucky to have you guys around as their personal guardian angels.

I was so grateful to find that I had moved my keys out of my purse and into a jacket. We would have had to change all our locks just in case.

we actually felt very guilty looking into their wallets to find the address...lol

Its nice to know that there still are good people out there. With all the terrible things I read about it is hard to remember that not everyone is out to get me. Good for you. Of course you did lose a little, but it could have been so much worse.

Glad you got it back--that''s so rare! And the hard to replace stuff is sometimes more important (and the purse!).

That happened to me once--left my entire bag in a cab, and no receipt in my case. I had house keys, money, paperwork, purse, ID''s..etc.

Next day I got a call from work saying someone called there (must''ve found my business card) and had my purse...left his number. I called him..and was sooo happy..it was the cabbie. I agreed to meet him on a crowded street corner. My intention was to get my purse and give him the money in my wallet as a thank you. Well opened my wallet and it was empty so gave him nothing, but had a *feeling* he already rewarded himself. Oh well, fine with me since I was just so thankful for the other stuff..

I also heard a common thing is for theives to dump the purse in the trash and the police end up with it so sometimes you eventually do get it back in that case too.

Anyway, yay for (mostly) good samaritans!

I''m so glad you got the important stuff back!! There really are some wonderful people out there, aren''t there?

I left my wallet in a cab a few years back in Chicago and bless her heart, a postal worker found it. She went out of her way trying to find me, but my address on my license was old, my law school wouldn''t give out my contact information or allow her to bring the wallet and have them deliver it to me, and of course no credit card companies would give out my information either! The only way I even found out she had it was when I called to cancel my credit cards, she had left her phone number and information with my credit card company and I got in touch with her that way! When I went to retrieve it, all of my money was there, along with everything else, and she wouldn''t accept a dime.

With all the horrible stories out there, it is easy to forget that there are some truly wonderful and helpful people out there in this world!!

I''m so glad to hear that you got your wallet back! Sometimes I feel that the wallet itself is more precious than the cash in it.
Did you call your credit cards anyway as a precaution? You never know if the people who stole the cash also took down your card numbers.

Ditto, and happy to hear there are still decent people out there.

I found a wallet once (money still inside). Turned out the owner lives practically next door to me so I went there to give it back. The lady looked at me like she was expecting me to point a gun at her and it obviously took her a fair amount of time until she finally came to the conclusion that I wasn''t an armed and dangerous member of the infamous and horrifying gang of the wallet returners. Then she opened the wallet and started counting the cash. She said "Ok" and slammed the door in my face!

I mean, I don''t want a reward or anything but a "Thank you" might have been nice!
