I'm finding this really hard to believe for some reason, probably because it looks soooo much like a modern-day bra:

If that was part of a fashion cycle, what does that say about what's next for us... corsets?

The whole story:

London: Brassiere might not be a modern invention after all, as historians have uncovered from the vault of an Austrian castle a bra dating back to the 15th Century.

While it was known that medieval men wore undergarments like modern-day shorts, it was thought that women simply wore a chemise.

Bras were thought to be a modern invention, appearing just around 100 years ago, whereas Knickers were believed to have made an appearance only in the late 18th century.

Four bras and two pairs of pants were among almost 3,000 fragments of clothing and other detritus found in Lengberg Castle in East Tyrol during recent renovations, BBC history magazine reported.

Two of the bras resemble modern counterparts but the others are described rather bluntly as `shirts with bags`.

The knickers are similar to the string bikini briefs in fashion today, while the bra is like that of its modern-day counterparts, featuring fitted cups and delicate straps.

They had remained hidden in a vault beneath the floorboards of an Austrian castle since the 15th century.

It is thought that they were buried when the building was extended in 1480 and that the exceptionally dry conditions stopped the fragile garments from disintegrating over the centuries, the report said.

"Nothing like this has ever come up before," Hilary Davidson, fashion curator at the Museum of London, was quoted as saying by the `Daily Mail`.

She added that the discovery "totally rewrites" fashion history.

"These finds are a very exciting insight into the way people dressed in the Middle Ages," she continued.

Beatrix Nutz from Innsbruck University confirmed the find after radiocarbon-dating tests.

That sure does look very contemporary, doesn't it??? (even 'punk', if you overlook the fact its 600 years old!) I guess we really don't invent that many 'new' things, do we, but rather re invent and modernize items that have proven useful over the years.

Interesting!

I truly don't know what's more amazing - the number of stories people can make up or the incredible arrogance of the (fiction) authors in thinking others are really SO stupid enough to swallow them as gospel.

Saw this on the web. Very cool! Historians really thought women didn't wear knickers? Men historians, no doubt.

I'm confused ... why do you think the story is made up aljdewey?

And why are posts showing up in duplicate and triplicate? (hoping this only posts once!)

I guess I probably started the skepticism ball rolling, Maria. It just seems too perfectly like what we wear today, and given that apparently the design didn't last, and there was a several-hundred year gap before the the style was re-introduced... it just seems strange, that's all. I mean geeze - all that's missing from that 600-year old bra is the foam!

Add this tidbit from another news story -

Although the linen garments were unearthed in 2008, they did not make news until now said Beatrix Nutz, the archaeologist responsible for the discovery.
Researching the items and carbon dating them to make sure they were genuine took some time. She delivered a lecture on them last year but the information stayed within academic circles until a recent article in the BBC History Magazine.

How on earth - why on earth - would you keep such a find quiet??? I know academics have a reputation for being "dry" and all, but this seems just too good not to share!

But I guess I should just roll with it since it was carbon-dated and all. Still seems mighty strange though!

This was excavated by a 600-year old Hooter's restaurant.
Isn't that proof enough?

Yeah, I too was surprised when I read that the discovery was made in 2008. And women didn't wear "knickers!" Haha Paris Hilton & friends were actually being traditionalists when they were going commando a few years ago.

Because of the weirdness of duplicate posts, I thought maybe aljdewey was actually responding to DF's thread asking why people lie.

I suspect the "knickers" would have had more to do with the "monthly visitor" than every day wear... :wink2:

Interesting! You're probably right!

I am very shocked to know about its history. Its history is really very interesting. I have got a good knowledge to read this. Thanks for sharing this.
