This is a small victory but there is at least hope that if these farmers could have a change of heart, maybe others will follow suit. I watch The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (guilty pleasure) and one of the cast mates, Lisa Vanderpump is actively trying to shut down the Yulin dog meat festival in China. Didn't know such a thing existed until I watched the show so maybe it will lead to more awareness which will in turn get it shut down.

Those little faces just make my heart melt, I hope they will find wonderful homes and get to actually be dogs, rolling around in the grass, playing in the sun and being a member of a family.

Sooo... This is going to sound crazy (of course it will) but i have no issue with other people eating dog meat. Its sometimes a cultural thing. I didn't grow up eating dog or thinking it was ok do to so. Cultrually there will be others that feel differently, dogs are a food source, just like many other animals.

The turnoff for me is how they treat the dogs. IMO, If they didn't torture the dogs I think it would be a lot LESS of an issue.

But yes they're cute, of course they are.

But lets flip that script; deer are cute, and so are bunnies. Some people have pet chickens, pigs, and cows and I'm sure they find them very cute too. Some people have pet fish or turtles. IMO they taste good to me. I'm an omnivore and I really like meat...I ain't gonna be a hypocrite in THAT way...and yes I love and wear leather.

Good treatment and humane kills are important to me. When I hunt (its rare) I try to make sure the kill is quick and humanely done. I kill only for food, not for sport.

I will say that I draw the line at dog meat because frankly I have a dog. Thats very hypocritical in a way. BUT, if I were starving and in one of THOSE situations...I'd have to rethink a few things.

Even a vegetarian/vegan has to kill a living thing for food to survive. They may not THINK of it that way but plants aren't exactly rocks...

No Arcadian, I get where you are coming from, I was actually going to say in my post that it's probably hypocritical of me to have this opinion but I'm fine with eating other creatures. Pigs can be pets but I still love my bacon. I just personally can't wrap my head around eating a dog, I guess rabbit is off the menu since I have one.

I actually have a vegan friend that I bicker with on FB from time to time, last time I called her out because her whole point was "it's bad for the environment to eat meat". So I responded to say that it's a lot easier on the environment if you eat meat from a local farm then to have veggies shipped from Mexico or across the country.

She did not appreciate my view. Lol!

I struggle with this stuff regularly, because I'm a huge animal lover but also like meat and use leather goods. I agree that for me I could never eat dog (because I own dogs), but obviously I think pigs and cows are awesome but I do eat those. I think in the US we just don't think of dogs as edible, so it sounds HORRIFIC to eat them.

I agree that good treatment and humane kills are important, but even that is hard sometimes to figure out. I don't exactly know how to make sure that my meat/goods are killed humanely, but it's something I'd like to work on in order to be less hypocritical about my values/practices.

I can't justify in my mind, the harvesting of dogs for festival food. I have seen horrific pictures. I think it's barbaric. I hate that this is even an issue. Same with killing elephants and rhinos for horns used for "medicinal" purposes. Same for bear paws, and bear parts, tiger parts, shark fins, etc. :angryfire:

I agree with some of you on the hypocritical aspect. Factory farming is just as disgusting as some of the 'festivals' or other cultural things that foreign countries do.
That said, I'm pretty hypocritical myself. I do eat 'main stream' meat, I do wear leather, but I am also horrified at the things lyra lists. I could not eat dog, or any endangered species. I would not buy shark fin soup based on how horrifically the animals are treated. I will never own ivory or decorative paws like that.
We are desensitized to what we experience every day, but something out of the norm for us is quite shocking.
