Hey all!

Was hoping to get some good suggestions for my mom, who wants to do something for my dad for their 30th Anniversary. I''m looking into vow reneal stuff, but I am not sure if that is really ''his thing'', but it might be really sweet. It will be right after our family reunion, and my siblings and I might be able to be there, so that would be really perfect!

Any ideas for gifts?

My mom is a teacher, so she can''t afford anything extravagent like trips and such. She never plans ANYTHING for my dad for their anniversary, and usually forgets it entirely. I am trying to encourage her to be better, so I need your help!!! :)

I look forward to your brilliant suggestions!

Thanks!

Traditionally, it''s a pearl...

Modern, it''s a big ol'' diamond....

How about a collage or photo album or video of significant events in their lives? A friend of mine did a collage for her dad''s 80th birthday -- it was banner sized -- and contained favorite family photos, sayings, & small toys and such that told the story of her dad''s life and his importance to the family.

For her dad? Sure, if that's his taste...

I like Matata's idea. How about a Shutterfly album of photos of them and your family throughout the years?

Do you think it would be totally weird or inappropriate to try to do a surprise vow renewal AT our family reunion? It is his side of the family, and his siblings and nieces and nephews would be there, as well as probably a ton of people who never even got to attend their wedding. It would be really easy to get an officiant, and even just plain bands to use symbolically, which we could later frame or encase. OMG, it would be the cutest thing! (and probably make my family even more pissed that I want to elope, but what can you do?) OR, my siblings and I could do the ceremony, which my dad might REALLY love! And we could have family members speak about them, too! It would be fun, but maybe not the best idea to spend so much focus on my parents at a family reunion? I dunno... will have to talk it out...

Any thoughts? Too much?

I thing this would be a lovely idea!!!!

I just personally don''t get into the vow renewal thing unless the couple has split up and is getting back together. I think they''d both have to really want to do that and it would be very awkward otherwise.

I think her surprising him with a weekend get-away to a place he''d enjoy would be a nice gift for him. I got the rings in my avatar for my 30th, so I''m all for diamonds for her!!!!

DS: Most of our friends do it, for 25th and 30th wedding anniversaries. It is a big occasion.

so i just asked my husband what he''d like for our 25th, and given that 30 isnt that far past it, i thought his ideas might help...

he said, in this order:

a vacation - preferably a cruise
something sports related - 2 tickets right behind home plate at a baseball game (so i could go with him, apparently) (lucky me :S)
season tickets for any sport he likes
sports equipment (i''m seeing a theme here...)
gift voucher to a guy-shop (home depot, electronics store, sports store)
that big flat screen tv he always wanted

so i interrupted at this point and said....

"how about a vow renewal ceremony?" he looked at me like i was speaking in another language. so i said "how about a photo album of all your family and key events through the years?" he said "um...er...that might be nice...if...er...you were a sentimental kind of person.." i said "how about for YOU?" he looked at me like i''d just suggested he be circumcised without anaesthesia, and shook his head.

for what it''s worth, i really wanted to do a vow renewal for our 25th and i would have said my husband is pretty sentimental. i''m guessing it''s a gender difference thing....

Whitby that is sooooooooo funny. Actually, my husband and I were going to do it for our 25th, then fly off to Australia, but I came down with the horrid flu, so there went that idea.

We just had our 28th anniv in March. So for our 30th anniversary, we are definitly going to do a vow renewal and it was His idea in the first place. I love the idea of it and so does he. Many of our friends have a huge party too. It is so much fun.

Lol!!!! I imagine that would be my hubby''s response..I am quite sure he has never heard of such a thing! I think he''d say, uh, I''ve stayed for 30 years and the commitment speaks for itself!

I''ve been married for 32 years and my husband would rather be tortured than go through a vow renewal ceremony!

I guess some guys see this differently, but mine would certainly rather have a little get away trip or some new golf clubs!!!
