Valentine’s Day Proposal Ideas

Thinking of popping the question on Valentine’s Day? Need a little inspiration for how to get the deed done? We put together some ideas to get your creativity flowing for an engagement moment that you will treasure forever!

Valentine’s Day is one of those holidays that people expect romantic gestures, especially if you are someone who is hoping for an impending proposal. Keeping some elements of surprise in your intention is trickier, but not impossible. Even if you can’t hide it, you can make it an affair to remember! We’ve even added some ring ideas with each proposal, but just consider that inspiration and not a rule! Get a ring that means the most to you!

A couple of things to consider when prepping to propose:

  • Consider her feelings about how public to make the moment.
  • Keep proposals positive, bring the love. Save the pranks, scares, gags for another time. There are already a lot of emotions in play, and no one wants to be so overstimulated that they can’t remember the day.
  • Don’t put the ring in anything that is to be consumed (don’t ask us why). We receive a lot of stories about jewelry, some less fortunate than others.
  • Have someone “in the know,” helping you. Your intended may want to be dressed and prepared for pictures (take them!) to share in announcements. It’s good to have an accomplice that will help guide them gently into position. One nice thing about Valentine’s Day, it’s not too hard to convince someone to get fancy!
  • Don’t try to anticipate their response. Obviously, hope for a yes, but emotions can cause funny responses; shouting, crying, shock, swearing, silence, it could be anything. It’s a big moment and emotional responses are not cookie-cutter happenings.

Did you know that you can get personalized conversation hearts? Not only does it lean into the Valentine’s theme, but it’s also something special that they can keep and show off! Imagine a shadowbox frame with a wedding invitation, a picture of the two of you, and some of the hearts that were made for your proposal! If you can’t find them; never fear, Etsy is here!

For this proposal, a Heart Shaped Diamond or a Round Cut might fit the bill!

A Romantic Scavenger Hunt

A tree lined path with a chalk board arrow shaped sign stating "Scavenger Hunt Starts Here."

Totally inspired by the folks at The Knot! A trip down the memory lane of your relationship. Even if it is not the exact location, if you spend a romantic vacation in Paris – direct them to a location in a store selling Eiffel Towers (Craft stores should have them) and have the next clue covertly hidden there! There are a lot of creative ways to add to special elements that are just about your story!

For this proposal, an Emerald Cut, Asscher Cut, or Oval-Cut might be perfection!

During a Photo Shoot

A couple dressed up standing outdoors embraced.

Have a photographer on hand for photos, you could plant them at a restaurant and have them imply that this is part of Valentine’s Dinner (post-dessert). Then ask while they are there documenting the moment! You can then take your photo and go grab engagement photos since you are dressed and ready! A photographer and a quiet table proposal is a very different event than a big public proposal. Do what suits you!

For this proposal, a Pear Cut or Marquise might seal the deal!
