It’s the Month of Love, which could mean many different things in the natural diamond industry. Top 5 Popular Diamond Shapes - February 2022.

Round diamonds continue to be the most popular shape of diamonds on the market making up 75.34% (popularity) but slightly decreasing (-0.92%) in popularity since last month. Oval continues to sit in second place making up 6.66% (popularity) and slightly decreasing in popularity (-2.77%) since last month. Cushion remains in third place making up 5.65% (popularity). Emerald continues to sit in fourth place and we welcome a new shape to the Top 5 Popular Diamond Shapes, radiant.

This February the average price per carat for a round diamond of 1 – 1.19 carat G color VS1 clarity is $8,632 compared to January 2022 which was an average price of $8,393. The average price per carat for round diamonds has increased this month.

IDEX Polished Price Index Rises Steeply in January

The IDEX Polished Price Index kicked off the year with a hefty 5.67 percent increase, one of the steepest monthly rises for some years. It follows on from December’s 2021 high of 4.25 percent.  The Index was virtually flat for the first three weeks of January but surged on the 21st and kept rising steadily. The value of the Index averaged across the whole of January was up 16.7 percent in the same month in 2021 – that’s the highest year-on-year increase since December 2011.
