So we're trying to come up with a good alternative to escort cards. Each seat will have a name card placed at it, so guests just need to know where to direct themselves really. Any ideas come to mind that are an alternative to escort cards??

Hey there! Not sure if this will help, but I've been to some weddings where the house party and ushers just guest lists at the entrance, and the guests just go up to them and ask them to find their names on the list to tell them what table they need to go to. But that sometimes causes a big traffic jam at the entrance if there's a lot of guests all at once.

I think typically if people are not going with escort cards, they have some sort of seating chart set up at the entrance to the reception room.

Something like this or this...

I was also going to suggest the seating chart, and the ones lucyandroger posted are especially lovely!

you could also have the escort cards lined up on a table at the front...and have the table number on them. when the guests enter, they will pick up their escort card and then find their table.

ive been to 2 weddings that did this and it was totally fine. one bride even color-coded the escort cards so the servers would know what entree the guest chose

Thanks for all of the great ideas! I've considered most of these, but was trying to come up with something new and different. We're placing each guest at a specific seat due to family drama, etc. and the fact that we have looooong tables instead of rounds, so an escort card with a table number still necessitates a second place card at the table, KWIM?

We're doing a little something different, it's kind of like the seating chart, but instead of all the names of the guests and the corresponding tables, I'm going to have a chart of the layout and which table is where - think directories they have at malls (well, just the graphic portion). What I'm doing is including a short personalized message for each guest and their table number in the program itself, then they can go to the 'directory' and quickly locate their tables, where there will also be place cards.

We're doing one long table, in addition to round tables, as well, and what I plan on doing is labeling off sections of the long table so that guests have a better idea of where they're headed to find their place cards. I was thinking a more clever version of 'B1, B2, B3, etc' for the side of the table from me on (we'll be in the middle), and 'G1, G2, etc' for the side of the table from my FI on. I'd also like to somehow differentiate between sides of the table, since it will be long. Does that make sense? You can of course have fun with it and make it look really cute, or if your wedding is more formal you can of course snazz it up like the beautiful seating charts already posted on this thread. I'm going to get cute patterned fabric, stretch it over a foam board and then just pin everything on. I'm also going to have two - this project came about because we wanted to have a personal message for each of the guests, and also because I hate the traffic jam around the escort cards that I always seem to encounter (no offense to those doing escort cards!)

HTH!
