I'm way too non-confrontational.

Today I gave a grad student a factory tour (I manage research in a manufacturing environment and sometimes we work in partnerships with Universities).

I am an extreme introvert so while I do the tours and do them well, I always get a bit of performance anxiety.

Well this student was a jerk. He kept on acting like he knew everything about the manufacturing process, when his questions clearly show he didn't. He talked down to me the entire time and demanded to see things that aren't part of the normal tour (like screen shots of our CAD designs, um no, that is proprietary). He took photos after I said no photography etc. He also asked very specific questions that I either couldn't, or wouldn't answer. For example he asked something specific about the version of software used in the design department and I admitted that I didn't know which version it is (I did know the name of the program, but I have never used it so didn't know specifics). At one point he asked for a list of chemicals used in a process and their ratios. I obviously can't give out that kind of info.

Well this jerkface says in a loud voice in front of several of my colleagues "Can you find me someone who actually knows what they're talking about?"

That went over really well. Everyone was angry on my behalf and insisted that I call his academic supervisor and report him. I was filled with anxiety all afternoon in anticipation of that conversation. Grrrr

What a turdwad. Life is going to gjve him an enema very, very soon :angryfire:

Thanks! It's true, he needs to learn that his behavior doesn't work in a professional environment, or anywhere really.

I reported him and feel better about the whole thing.

I think part of the angst was that I didn't react right away and coworkers stepped in. I should be more assertive. Something I do struggle with.

Chemgirl,

I have learned over the years, that you need to come up with a standard line that will fit most situations while you are doing
your tour and memorize it so it pops in your head whenever you get one of these know-it-alls. It's when I get caught off guard
and am so shocked by someone's behavior/words that I can't think of anything to say and stand there like :-o . Having a
generic, to-the-point, non-condescending reply will help. You look like you kept your cool while he looks like the jerk that he
is.

Best of luck...I'm sure you do a great tour!

Something like - "I'm sorry, but this tour doesn't include the disclosure of propritetary information."? ;))

BTW, I agree with tyty - I'm sure you did a great job! Heck, just keeping your temper in check with that guy  constitutes doing a great job!

Chemgirl,

"I'm sorry, that is proprietary and I am not authorized to share it with you."

"Excuse me. I said no pictures as this is proprietary. You need to put your phone in your pocket and leave it there or I will be forced to have security take it and escort you out."

Oh... And for someone like that, i would end the tour early (how is he to know?) and have him wait while you discuss the matter with your manager (or legal staff or whatever) and his advisor.

Sorry he did that!

Lol I tried those, he just asked why. I did try and get him out faster, but the plant is almost a mile long so it still took a while!

His supervisor is pretty horrified by the whole thing so I feel better about it.

I need to get firmer with people. I sort of am the manager, so I can't really rely on anyone else to handle situations for me.

I want to thank everyone for their helpful advice!

Amber, I am so sorry you are going through this and I am sending you bucket loads of healing vibes. I would listen to your body and just sleep when you are exhausted like that. Maybe after an hour or so you will wake up feeling better so it might just be a nap as opposed to the whole night. But even if it is for the whole night listen to your body. Sending lots of (((hugs))) your way and wishes for a full recovery.

2 words: Florida fleas.

It's so bad this year, and I'm tempted to bomb my house. Ugh.

^^^^^^^^^^THIS

it got SO bad one year I had to get them off of the floor with a lint roller. we are super duper clean, vacuum, mop, clean our couches several times a week, and those pesky little guys still came out in full force. we FINALLY got them under control with a very strict regimen of cleaning, and using anti flea meds on our cats, they get x2 the flea liquid a month and 2 flea pills a month.
food grade diatomaceous earth

Have not had any issues since posting original post. Seriously working miracles and safe to both me and my kitten

Amber, biggest biggest hugs outgoing to you my friend!

Chem, I'm sorry you had to deal with this a$$. Thankfully his supervisor is aware, and appalled, so I hope he's reprimanded thoroughly. And really, you handled it beautifully. When people operate outside of decent common sense and normal social mores anything short of a deserved smacking upside the head is elegant behavior.

paz, being on day 47 I'm sure you've looked into everything short of voodoo, but just in case you haven't, what about magnesium? I won't bore you with the details in case you know all about it, but if not let me know. I take it religiously now and have found my migraines to be MUCH improved.

My husband has no common sense and it drives me crazy!

I don't know if I shared the story of the family dinner where poop dripped from the ceiling on to the table, but that is just one of his many infuriating house related stories.

Tonight I tried everything to get mud out of my white basement carpet. Looks like the stains are permanent.

Why is there mud in the carpet you might ask? Well because DH felt that the chair he was sitting in didn't have enough back support. So he went into the garage, dug up a camp chair, and sat in it on the white carpet. This chair was caked in mud from our last cookout (there had been a storm). Anyway who does that? Who gets so bothered by the nice cushy basement chair that they set up a camp chair inside? What was he thinking?

So now he is looking at hiring a cleaning company to deal with it. He's also looking at buying a new chair because he can never be comfortable.

Just be normal please!

Eta: I call him the princess and the pea. Like that children's story where the prince hid a pea between the princess's mattress for some bizarre reason? We are on mattress number 3 of our 4 year marriage and he is bugging me to replace the latest one! He also insisted we sell my car because the headrest hurt his neck. It was a 3 year old vw golf, very well designed and not uncomfortable for anyone else.

Hi Dee*Jay :wavey: I actually know nothing about taking magnesium for migraines, and would appreciate any information you share! Thanks so much, and I am glad that it is helping your migraines.

Believe it or not, this monster is the FIRST migriane I've had. :errrr: (I always say, go big or go home...) Since the beginning of this attack, I have been seen at my PCP, urgent care, ER, opthamlologist, ENT, massage therapist, pain management, and a neurologist. I've had x-rays and CT of my head and neck, and a MRI of the brain is scheduled for Friday. The neurologist has diagnosed me with chronic daily migraine (actually continuous, no break since before 6/1), but I do not know what type of migraine it is. I also don't know what my triggers are yet, as we haven't been able to break the migraine yet for me to see what sets of a new one.

If anyone else has dealt with chronic migraines, do you have any advice? At this point I am absolutely useless to anyone, other than the stockholders of Netflix and Hulu. Movement makes me dizzy, nauseated, and brings the pain stabbing into my face, so I' ve been a couch potato of late. If it helps, here is a list of everything I've tried thus far, with no noticable change to the migraine:

massage therapy
ice/heat/biofreeze gel/ TENS Unit
OTC pain relievers (stopped per dr)
discontinued birth control pills (per dr)
eliminated soda, aged cheese, cured meats , etc (don't drink or smoke)
toradol & steriod therapy
fioricet ( stopped per dr)
opioids & muscle relaxers- skipped one day, pain shot up to a 9, so this is heling.
triptans- brings pain level down to 4/5, but only allowed 6 pills per month.
Occipital nerve injections- Ouchie! Haven't noticed a diff, but willing to try again
Topamax- on second week of 25mg, begin 50mg on Fri.

So, besides wanting to chop my own head off, it's dandy.

*Any typos, grammatical errors, or plain stupidity are caused by the dopamax

I get migraines and cluster headaches daily. My migraines are mild though. I have found limiting my caffeine helps, and I take handfuls of feverfew a day which helps too.

I was on topamax, it gave me EXTREME paranoia, and anxiety. I was brought to tears out of fear from my shadow at night once.

if you can try taking fever few 3 times a day (if your doctor says so) surprisingly it has helped me the most

I have heard gua sha can be good for alleviating neck pain, headaches and muscle pain. Its something I have wanted to try for my headaches but I am kinda scared.

Maybe ask your doctor or massage therapist about it

paz, I don't want to give you specific links lest I steer you in one direction or other, but google migraine and magnesium and you will see a plethora of information. I started taking magnesium supplements (not the oxide, as that version isn't well absorbed, but one from GNC that has a couple different forms of magnesium that are not oxide; i.e., the "ates" -- citrate, sulphate, etc.) more than a year ago and it has made a TREMENDOUS difference in my headaches. I have also read about several studies where migraine sufferers are given a magnesium IV, which results in pretty immediate relief. Please do google that too and maybe talk to your doctor about the option. It will be much faster and more "direct" than taking the supplements, which can take months to accumulate in your system. Seriously, this magnesium has been a godsend!

Paz -- while they are at it, insist they do blood work and check all of your vitamin levels. DH was in agony (not headache, but full body issues to the point he could not stand or walk without assistance) and after months of never ending specialists and tests, it turned out to be "just" a vitamin deficiency. (his was b12, but check others - it is amazing what severe problems they can cause and how many doctors just don't look)

Paz: This is a stretch, but... have they looked for shingles? Not that you'd want it to be shingles, but a GF's father had constant pain that turned out to be shingles behind his eyeballs.

Anyhow I hope the docs figure it out and figure out how to get you some relief from the pain.
