@Asscherhalo_lover weather is beautiful but also so destructive! someone on twitter posted a very beautiful image of Ida at daybreak. But there's also the realization of the destruction a storm like this brings.
It will absolutely be retired. there will be loss of life with this. I heard they won't call Cat 5 but they may have to after the fact.

I’m ok.
I did wind up driving the puppies and 3 kittens up to Mass— I went by myself and didn’t contact anyone because I went I-81 and didn’t recall anyone saying they were on the route. I avoided DC, Philly, NYC by going to near Scranton Pa and then across to Mass.
I got back YESTERDAY. (I was gone 2 weeks because I made it a vacation).
nearly all of my family, friends and neighbors— like 98% of them stayed in the Nola areas. Why??!! It’s going to be a cat 5 upon reevaluation. I think they have apathy and PTSD from Katrina and covid and felt safer in their houses. It makes no sense.
At my house, we are currently ok. I went to Nola yesterday from Florida and helped my son clean out the fridge, and get that house ready for the storm. I gave it a sweet pat on the siding and told it good luck and I hope it would do ok. The ring doorbell is out but the garage cam is working and it’s not raining too much and the wind seems manageable.
my son and his dog are staying with my daughter, which seems like that area will remain west of the weather. My other son went up north and I also think he will remain out of the weather.
We will get some weather in the next few hours, but we
have the generator set up, etc.

I'm glad you're in a safe spot @whitewave I don't know why anyone who had means to leave would want to stay in this. As strong as my house is (the neighborhood went through Andrew with very little damage) I would be very hard pressed to stick it out in a storm like that or like Ida.
Regardless of my thoughts of their state of mind, I hope that they're doing well and continue to do so. The next 12 hours is going to be pretty rough.

@whitewave Hi! New Orleanian here. I’m hunkered down at Touro Hospital, rain isn’t bad but the wind is very loud. Lights have flickered a couple times but hopefully the generators do their job.

There's unconfirmed reports about a oil rig platform being loose. Also there were still people in Grand Isle, which is near where landfall was...about 40 people. I was told that its mostly under water. You can't get a live camera there unfortunately.

sustained winds are estimated to be 145 mph (235 km/h). The
estimated central pressure is 934 mb (27.58 in).
Within the past hour, a research wind gauge near Golden Meadow,
Louisiana, reported sustained winds of 70 mph (113 km/h) and a gust
to 107 mph (172 km/h) and a Weatherflow site in Dulac reported
sustained winds of 76 mph (122 km/h) and a gust to 104 mph
(167 km/h).
The New Orleans Lakefront airport reported a peak wind gust of

This is such a bad situation for anyone thats down there. This is a storm that will affect us all for a very long time.
The good is that winds are starting to come down to 110MPH , which is a cat 2. The eye is moving away from NOLA area (WNW) but its a slog at 9MPH. The power grid will not be up in the NOLA area. thats bad in more ways than one.

whats happening in LaPlace is exceptionally bad. The flooding is absolutely bad. They've had a 12 inches of rain. apparently some people are at the 2nd levels of their homes. no where left to go except to the roof.
