I''m so lost when it comes to measurements so I thought it might be a great idea to ask the experts here on the forum.

My friend recommended this diamond dealer from St. Martin. I''m not sure if his recommendations will perform well. AND THE COST? (yikes???)

The fax was hard to read but I think this is what I could make out...what do you guys think...?

Hmm I don't like either of them from what you posted...but why are you shopping with someone in St. Martin?

Don't know that I'd spend $40k with a jeweler in another country.

I think I''m with Mara on this one. I don''t like the numbers on either of them...and the prices don''t strike me as a good deal either, especially given they''re not really great proportions. Hmmm.

That is what I was thinking as well...maybe it''s a magic ball or something!!! ha ha ha...

No don''t worry - I was just browsing since my friend recommended this guy when they bought her engagement ring while on vacation. She bought a 3.04ct. Canary diamond from Oro diamante.

The funny thing is that he was telling me over the phone that it was a Tolkowsky Ideal and they were really beautiful and perfect bla-bla...and that I would not be able to get a better deal since his in-laws work in the jewelery industry in the US. Very strange....It was difficult to read the fax so he e-mailed the measurements but forgot to e-mail the table size and depth. Do you girls think the measurements in mm. is small?

That being said...
Can you guys please steer me into the proper direction - I don''t want to call Whiteflash just yet....I first want to learn and gather my thoughts.

We''re looking for a Round close to 2.75 to 2.8-ish but don''t want to spend more than $27.00 US. I always dreamed about a 3ct. round but that''s for the birds!!!

I''m still doing my home work before I can convince my Boyfriend to shop from one of the vendors online. He does not believe me that the INTERNET is the way to go...grrrrrrrr! I want to prove to him (with your recommendations and expertise that I can do better in terms of quality and cost online)

Oh and Mara - thanks for the recommendations - you are always swift. It seems like the first link was sold out but not to worry - we just don''t have $42.000. Even the $32.00 might give my boyfriend a heart attack. Do you think we''ll be able to find a 2.75 to 2.8ct diamond in the $27 US range? We''re still saving...

Thanks ladies! Love you guys!!!

Ha ha, might want to add another zero to those numbers there. I almost fainted when I saw you only wanted to spend max. 27.00 on an almost 3 carat diamond!

if he was okay with buying from some someone in st. martin, i don''t think it will be too awfully hard to convince him that buying from a reputable online vendor is the way to go!

show him mara''s thread on her new 2.3 beauty.

ries, if you are going to spend $27k on a stone then i would take a trip to texas for $500 (airfare for you both and one night in a hotel or similar!) and see the stone for yourself in person if you find it at WF (or any other online vendor!)...it''s worth it when you are spending that kind fo $$ and then boyfriend feels better.

i would think if you can drop to H SI or I SI you could get a 2.8c or so for $27k. but depends on inventory too! 3c J SI2 is about $25-26k right now but there are none available!

It''s going to be beautiful and quite the shiner!!! If you ever see a stone listed in my price range, can you please alert me - I''m not always in the loop. I don''t mind dropping to I - J and SI1 at all. It''s really all about size and cut for me. wink-wink!

can you get a sarin report on it? the depth is just a little shallow for me BUT i know that demelza has a fabulous stone that has table and depth specs similar to that, so if the angles are nice, it could be worth taking a look at.

I''ll ask Whiteflash to look into it. I would rather use WF or Engagementringsdirect for our final purchase...do you think they would mind doing the research on a diamond not listed on their web? Oh & Mara, do you have an e-mail address for someone other than bob at whiteflash?

Contact Lesley, Ries! I think that if its a virtual stone that WF could get their hands on it, worth asking anyway.

I hope you take everyone''s adive into consideration. Too many bad things are happening lately. I would be hesitant on that transaction.

So the latest news....Lesley e-mailed the GIA and AGS reports and promised to e-mail the sarin reports when they''re available...which is fine with me, we''re in no rush and I think Lesley is extremely busy at this time.

I have a quick question...
The GIA cert diamond is 9.5 x 9.19mm with the table at 54% Versus the AGS diamond 8.95 x 9.00mm with a table at 57%. Does that mean that even if the dimensions in mm is larger for the GIA diamond (which is probably not as well cut as the AGS diamond) that the AGS with smaller dimensions will appear larger since the table is larger? I''m confused between the table size and the mm dimensions. From what I can see on the GIA report the diagram showed angles 32.0 and 40.2 and the AGS report showed 35.5 and 40.4 angles. Does this mean anything?

Let me just say there will be quite a few "I love you honey and mega smiles" for the next little while. So I''m trying to be realistic with the GIA diamond since it is $6000+ cheaper than the AGS. Will the sarin report show the difference? I''m not really familiar with Sarin reports...

By the way...Are we allowed to post reports and Sarin reports online?

Thanks girls & guys!

Hi Mara,

I found the cert. online. what-ya-think? I''ve also e-mailed Les. at WF. for the sarin report.

The Sarin report will have the same info the cert has, but ... I can''t read the proportions on the picture at all. What are they?

It certainly looks like not just steep-deep flunks get into the GIA Ex. cut grade. Some stones with AGS0-compatible proportions (and a nod from the HCA) make it there too. Which may not be so surprising, given that GIA is a larger and more popular joint by a mile or two. Since neither lab grades H&A, that bit of guess remains - whether optical symmetry yields a pattern or not. On a larger stone I would not insist as much on it as on smaller though. Your call, I guess.

My 2c... waiting for those numbers!
