Let''s see, if you started the clindamycin on 4/27 (the day you started this thread) I would think they would have had some effect by now...however, absesses are sometimes really hard for the antibiotics to penetrate. Sometimes the ABX don''t start "working" until you are almost done with the regimen. Whatever you do, don''t stop them!

Clindamycin is notorious for causing upset stomach and diarrhea (not to be gross, but just warning you in case it happens). It can cause something called c. diff diarrhea, which is short for clostridium difficile, a type of "bad" bacteria that can overgrow when on this particular ABX. Definitely eat a lot of yogert and I would take an additional pro-biotic/acidophillis/lactobacillus supplement while on it.

I hope you feel better soon! I have had my share of root canals and they are never fun!

That''s just terrible storm! If you are finished the antibiotics tomorrow than the specialist better get back to the drawing board with your diagnosis and treatment plan.

Perhaps it''s not the right antibiotic for your abscess?

Tooth pain HURTS something rotten but if they can save the tooth (and put you out of your misery, geez already) that would be preferable. Unless you get another in its place your teeth will shift and give you more of a headache later...stooooopid crap.

Talked to my endodontist he said with the abscess as big as it is that pulling it isnt an option right now.
Another round of anti-biotics and more pain meds and he is going to work me in next week for an appointment.

I guess I can see that - the whole thing is you don''t want the bacteria to have access to the bloodstream and cause you to go septic. Pulling the tooth could do that.

What meds are on the plate today?

he had a canelation.
went in and he redid the root canal and flushed it.
novican is still doing its thing but I can feel it.
Going to be a rough evening.

Im pissed he talked me into it by saying he was giving me a break on the price.
He had been giving me 1/2 off so im like ok $500 a lot of money but I can handle it, what he didnt tell me is that a redo is a lot more and its actuly $965 I owe him after the discount.
*gulp*
thats going to take a long while.

Yuck, why would the redo be more? I don't know how these things go but I sorta feel like 'yanno people, ya didn't get it right the first time so the redo should be free' because you did pay for the root canal in the first place. If it wasn't done sufficiently they need to get it done till it is...that IS what you paid for, after all. That is big time suck-o. I hope this works.

Was the dentist that did the first one , the endodontist did the redo.
Its more because it takes more time to dig the filling out.

Wonder why they didn''t have the endodontist do it in the first place. The endodontist did mine and so far I''m footloose and fancyfree (knock on wood). I''m supposed to get the permanent crown put on the tooth on Monday. Positive thoughts that it works this time.

Because my dentist did one before and it was fine and he takes payments and is a good guy.
I dont like asking for special favors from clients and taking payments is a huge favor with the endodontist.
So didnt want to ask if I could avoid it.

Storm,

This is the worst tooth story I have ever heard and I am just so sorry that it is ongoing. Is there no other way to get antibiotics into you? What about IV?

Prayers outgoing!!!

IV of something else could work but if there are no other antibiotics that Strm can take with the other meds he''s also taking....then he''s sorta stuck with what he''s got. Have they upped the dose of clindamycin to beat that abscess down?

Is that true? I am not a medical person. I thought perhaps he could be given huge doses of the Clindamycin if he didn''t have to take it orally.

Perhaps it''s not the right antibiotic for your abscess?

The dentist can have a wet-mount count done of the bacteria. The Oral Microbiology Testing Service Laboratory at Temple University School of Dentistry has such a process. Your dentist will receive a print-out of exactly what bacteria (and in what proportion) are present at the site. This may be worth doing, because if Clindamycin isn''t working, you may need to take something that will work. It is possible the doctors will need to substitute other medications for your other problems to allow you to be on the right antibiotic, because this is ridiculous! You need the right antibiotic to knock out this infection.

Not feeling like chatting tonight much but wanted to stop in and say thanks.
Think im going to give him a call in the morning if it don't go too crazy at work right off the bat.
http://www.nhhn.org/body_physicians.cfm?id=2703
There is the chart...
clindamycin is the best of the group 2 for dental infections and the least interactions.
amoxicillin is the same with the group 3.
The group 2 are dangerous and the group 1 a total no no without hospitalization.

Have to be careful because the last time my levels dropped I got several small blood clots.
