A while ago, dear FI proposed to me with a really nice x-factor from WF, and so off we went to get the stone set at a local jeweler. While we were at the jeweler, we saw a ready-made x-prong setting meant for a slightly larger round stone. I asked the jeweler abt it and she assured me that if I pay $30 to get it altered, it will fit the stone nicely and will be gorgeous. I tot it will be a gd way to save over $200, so i agreed.

She DID NOT mention the fact that it MIGHT turn out looking terrible, and it DID turn out tt way. I picked it up today and it's absolutely horrible looking. Her original quote was $400 for a custom setting and $220 if I alter the ready-made setting. Now she's asking me for a total of $500 so I can get a custom-made setting tt satisfied me! I hate it that she's expecting me to pay $100 extra for HER MISTAKE. She even blamed my stone for being "too small" (it's 0.59 carat BTW)!

At the time I went to her shop, they were about to close, so she asked me to go back tmr and we'll discuss the ring. When I go back, I'll definitely point out to her that she misrepresented how the ring will turn out, and I shud not be paying for her mistake. Quoting her, she said it "will look absolutely gorgeous" and I'll "definitely be satisfied". I am so angry now, if she refuse to absorb the extra $100 and let me pay the originally quoted $400, I will definitely make a case out of it.

For the benefit of fellow Singaporeans here, the shop I went to is Leipo, located at Lucky Plaza.

Here are some pics to share...

The ring looks good from the top:

But its so terrible from ALL other angles! The x-prong is very lumpy-looking. Looks worse IRL than in the photos...

Here''s a view of the opposite side of the ring. Equally bad.

Wow...

I''d want to return that mounting, get all my money back, and take my diamond to another jeweler...

Good luck!

Widget, I will definitely try to argue tt tmr, but I suspect I won''t be able to get that done. I have $220 with her and it''s near impossible to get it back. I can''t afford to forfeit tt amt of money.

Oh no... The receipt says goods sold are not refundable... So I guess I have no way of getting my money back.

Did you pay by credit card where you can dispute the charges? I would go in and politely say that you understand the return policy but surely that would meen no refunds on items that are perfect, not items that are defective with the jeweler at fault. I wouldn''t let them work on it further. if they won''t refund and you paid with a card, get your money back that way.

I''m so sorry Gladyskristen. The ring looks lumpy, bumpy and uneven. I hope you can come to an agreeable resolution with the jeweler. It looks like you''ll really have to stand your ground with her to either get it fixed or bug her so badly that she''ll refund your money just to get "rid" of you. Is this in WG?

Try to get some sleep. I'd go back and show them how poorly it was made and demand your money back, or at least have them fix it. Maybe have your FI go with you???

Gosh, that really does look bad.

If you don't get your money back easily, threaten to turn them in to the BBB, and Jewelers Vigilance Commitee.

First, let me tell you how sorry I feel for your situation. This store in Singapore needs all the BAD PRESS you can give them.

I would remove the diamond myself (or take it to a reputable jeweler)......first, I would make sure they didnt steal my diamond!!.....return the setting to the store (without the diamond) and tell them to correct it. If they dont corrrect it right, then I would inform them that you will give them all the bad press that you can give.

Hey, post pictures on Flyers and put on cars in the area. This will get heads to turn quickly. Mail the a couple of flyers as well or bring the flyers with you. A jewelers reputation is what they live on and without a good reputation, they will surely fail.

Have a T-Shirt made and wear it and show a picture of the shoddy ring work and advertise the stores name, so people can see what kind of work they do.

Of course, I know nothing of the Singapore laws and culture, so the above could get you in trouble with the law. Use at your own risk!!! Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks for ur support! The comment by MWG got me laughing, cos tt's exactly what i feel like doing right now! But I won't cos I'll probably land up in jail or something for doing it in Singapore. Lol.

Unfortunately, my FI can't go with me cos he knocks off at 6.15pm and they close before 7pm! So I guess I'm on my own this time. *crosses fingers* I'll be a brave girl and try to tackle this annoying lady on my own. I won't let her off. She insulted my poor diamond, saying tt the setting is so horrid cos my baby is too small!

That is some bad looking work. So sorry about this. Since you paid cash you may be forced to at least try to let them rectify the situation. Stand your ground and any time you feel like backing down, remember that you will be wearing this ring and want to be happy with it. Point out the workmanship flaws you find unacceptable and DOCUMENT each interaction you have with them in case you need the info in the future. BTW, have that stone insured ASAP if it isn''t already...don''t want to add stone damage to the can of worms....EEK.

Rings are made for specific size stones, so it is never a good idea to buy a setting that does not fit your diamond in the first place. But this workmanship is so bad that I would rather lose the $200 before I gave them any more money. Is there a consumer protection organization there?

It does look bad. I hope you can resolve it this trip. If not take your DF with you and try again.

DiamondSeeker: Yes there''s a Consumers'' Association here. I got the ring altered on the grounds tt she said tt it will look very good and I shouldn''t have to worry. Unfortunately, I have no documented proof tt she said so.

Oh no, that''s horrible! I think you have a lot of good advice here--if you can''t afford to lose that $200, DEFINITELY keep on going back and demanding them to work on your ring until you get EXACTLY what you want. And I second the motion to make sure they didn''t switch your diamond.

You deserve a beautiful ring! Please keep us posted on what transpires.

I''m sending lucky vibes your way!

I think it is irrelevant what she told you. The ring looks awful and no one would accept that kind of workmanship. Tell her you wish to return the ring because of the unaceptable workmanship or you will have to report it to the consumer''s association.

Wow I''m sorry you''re having such a bad experience tryign to get your ring! I can definitley see where you are unhappy and I second what a lot of people have said on here, especially about making sure they haven''t switched your diamond. Unfortunately, on here I have not hurt very good things about the store you went to, so I''d be a little iffy about going there again. I really hope you''ll be able to get your money back! Goodluck today!

Sorry to hear about all of this! If it''s any consolation, your stone looks beautiful on your hand in the top photo. Hopefully the jeweler will finally cave in, since it was their mistake from the beginning. I''d try going to the Consumers'' Association...even though you have nothing in writing, maybe they could still help you...?

I dont know what to say to make you feel better because its clear that they did not do a great job and that you are unhappy. I hope you can find a way that you are okay with in order to get what you deserve. Otherwise, you''ll never be happy and looking at the ''imperfections'' will only be a source of pain and frustration.

Good luck lady, be strong and polite, and we''ll cross our fingers that they take responsibility.
wishing you the best!

I am so sorry. I know you are just sick. I hope they will do the right thing and fix it...if you trust them to. And it just infuriates me that they would say your diamond is too small...I think is looks so pretty on your hand in that shot from the top, not too small at all thank-you-very-much!! (((((HUGS)))))
