Well, other than the fact that I'm not inclined to put too much of my personal info in a single post on the WWW, and find the endless "what did you have for lunch" type threads a bit too inane to respond to most times, I don't find questions about how much I paid for my home to be rude, unless I find the particular person asking to be a rude person, and most people who've asked me over the years have not been. I have nothing to be ashamed of in how much I paid, nor do I worry it might reveal much about my income. I also don't find such questions too intrusive, because in reality, how much I paid is a matter of public record. I, or anyone truly inclined, can go to the county assessor's website and find out square footage and who paid how much for any property, any time.

here in the U.S. what one paid for their house is public record.

We are renting a 900 sq foot apartment right now.

We are looking to buy in an area where it costs nearly £1000 per sq foot. Yes, you read that right. So our current 900 sq foot would cost £900,000 or about $1.3 million.

We could live in an eight bed, seven bath, mansion with a pool and a triple garage practically anywhere else on the planet for what we will pay for a small house here. But this is London, the greatest city I have ever lived in and I'm not going anywhere else :cheeky:

Not shocked in the least. That's consistent with or below prices in many Manhattan neighborhoods.

I think it's about 1000 sq ft? Two stories. It's not ours; we rent. We've lived here for 1.5 years. Hopefully the next time we move, it will be into our own house. :))

Ours is 850 sq ft, it was built in the mid-90's and we paid around the $600k mark for it about 4 years ago. It needed a fair amount of work doing. We looked at around 40 properties before choosing this one.

For central London we did very well price wise as we chose an area that still isn't that well-know despite being really beautiful. If we'd chosen a more opoular postcode then we would probably have paid around $1 million + for the same property.

We've also been lucky that house prices in the area held steady and our property is now worth more than we paid for it + the renovation costs despite the economy.

I'd never dream of asking someone how much they are paid, but amonst all our friends we are pretty open about house prices - especially as they are available on-line.

4000 sq. foot, two story in the Atlanta Suburbs. Bought in 2004 for $390K. Hoping that it's appreciated somewhat as we will be putting it on the market in March!

We just moved to Las Vegas last week, still unpacking - the new house is 4100 square feet, although old house was 3800 sf, not included in sf was a basement and three car garage which my husband used for his tools and workshop, and my gardening tools - this house a bigger living space, but we don't have the space for his workshop, or the roomy basement. On the plus side, our families frequently visit and we have a better guest bedroom set up with baths for everyone. The houses here have garages with space for two cars and a golf cart so he is packing everything into the golf cart area and setting up shop, and I won't need much gardening tools because it's all desert plantings and a smaller lot.

We are also moving into an HOA environment with pretty strict guidelines, but maybe thats a good thing. Loving it so far

Little threadjack to say gwendolyn! I have missed your posts! I hope you are doing well.

ETA: I don't own, renting in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. I rent a 1 bedroom 1 1/2 bathroom apartment that is ~800 square feet for just under $700/month, including water. Extras that have to be paid are electric, cable, and internet. Very open concept with a in unit laundry spacious 12 x 16 bedroom. Downsides are that the bathrooms are tiny and the kitchen is small. The neighborhood is wonderful and quiet and has lots of sidewalks and trails for walking. I'm enjoying my time renting here.

Ours is ~1600 square feet, plus an additional 700 feet of unfinished daylight basement. It's a 1923 2 story craftsman and we love it, although when we bought it 2.5 years ago we didn't think the market would keep dropping.

3000 sq ft (basement is an additional 1500 if you want to add that into the mix). We built over 17 years ago. Cost was negligible (sold off a bunch of acreage that paid for the house), but the cost back then for a house this size on 1+ acre was going for around $250,000 in my neighborhood.

Very cool. I don't have cable but maybe I can sneak over to the IL's house to watch it! Let us know the title or a clue or something when it gets closer.

My brother and sister in law and their kids were in a Kraft commercial. I don't watch tv enough to catch it "live" but I watched it on youtube and I was like "squee squee!" So fun!

7,500 SF on 15 acres (approx 7 of lawn, 8 of woods, stream, pond)
Single story "soft contemporary" with walk-out lower level (4 bed, 5 bath)
Paid $650,000 in '05 - assessed value for taxes $1,015,000

We live "in the country" west of the city and love it. It took quite a bit of getting used to for this tried and true city girl! But we live on a very private lot, pool & hot tub in the back yard, tons of other outdoor living space (decks, gazebo, pergola) and lawn galore... perfect place for 4 kids and a puggle! And we're only 30 minutes to downtown without traffic.

Tiny little house built in the 1940s that needs some love after bringing up kids in it since 1986. Its a quirky two storey with a main floor of about 800 sq. ft. and a second floor that's smaller due to the roofline. Bought it for $89,900.00 and could probably sell it in its current condition (exterior paint peeling, hardwood floors needing refinishing, only one bathroom, partial basement with crawlspace, needs a new roof and eaves trough replacement, I could go on!) but current market value is around $600,000.00 because the land is so valuable. We live 2 blocks from a major hospital and University. The lot isn't large by rural standards but for inner city it is generous. Six minutes from downtown, a casual walk to entertainment facilities, restaurants, concert halls, etc., so living here is a lifestyle choice. We will NEVER sell this property but might eventually renovate once our kids end their financial association with us. We might rent it out and retire in the third world, who knows?

We just purchased our home three weeks ago, so I guess I'll play. ;))

We purchased a two story colonial in Southern NJ, 5 Bedrooms, 5 Baths, a little over 5200 SF if you include the finished basement or 4000 SQ without it. A little over 1 acre of land with a pool and completely fenced in yard. We paid in the mid $500k range.
Taxes are about $13K a year. We moved in on Dec. 28th.

Note to future buyers and sellers, never ever close or buy during the Holidays. No offices are open and everyone is off for the long weekend.

I think we got a great deal on this house because another house in the same subdivision that we made an offer on and were rejected, sold for over $50K more , same floor plan, but ours was a lot more upgraded and had the additional sunroom. Also, the house appraised for more than what we paid.

The house does need some work in the backyard because the owners replaced the septic right before we moved in, but hopefully after a year the grass will grow back and I am excited to see the results.

The house we just sold in Staten Island, NY, we paid over $720k and we pretty much broke even and sold it for the exact price we paid. We purchased that home in 2007. 2 story detached colonial, 4 Bedrooms, 3.5 baths, approximately 2800 SF. Taxes were about $4k a year. The land was .13 acres but it did have a pool and fenced in yard as well and we actually had the biggest backyard on our street, lol!

We got great rate at 3.95% so our mortgage payments are considerably lower than they were in NY even with the much higher property taxes. :appl:

Main house 3000 SQ FT 2-story, 4 bedroom 2.5 bath with basement. Lived here 26 years. Just bought a 2nd vacation home in SW FL and hit the absolute bottom of the market according to the many agents who are trying to get us to sell it even though we've only had it for 5 months. Vac home is 2500 SQ 4 bedroom 3 bath on a lake with caged in pool/spa.

Its really interesting to see the variation in price for houses of similar size.

I agree, Chemgirl. This is kind of OT but I also think it's interesting to see what people consider their dream home, in terms of size. I think it kind of depends on layout, but my dream house would probably be around 1600-1800 square feet (3 bdrms, 2 baths, spacious but not huge rooms, and a finished basement or room above a 2 car garage for my husband's toys). I've seen houses that were listed as 1500 square feet and some seemed huge while others seemed really tiny. Again, I think it all depends on how the house laid out.

I hear you about houses. Before we bought, hubby and I rented a 900 square feet house, that actually was fine, space-wise. We had a galley kitchen and small bathroom, but in addition to the bedroom we had 3 rooms (one for his studio, plus a front living room and a "den"). It had a nice long backyard.

When we moved to our current house, it felt huge in comparison. It felt strange not hearing the front of the house from the bedroom.
Just us, it feels spacious. When we had 1 kid it felt just right. When the 2nd kid came, it feels cozy/crowded. Part of it is the extra bodies, but also that both my husband and my kids seem to be attracted to space-consuming type hobbies, so you name it - musical instruments, tables or easles for art, toys, dance/sports shoes) which spills out into common areas.
We would love to renovate the attic, which would give us another 500 square feet of space, but more importantly to create a bedroom spaces and a play/hang out area that is more private for the kids and contain all the stuff.

-At the same time, if it doesn't happen it won't be the end of the world. I had to share a room with my sister when growing up. If anything it helped me learn how to share space with people, and look forward to and appreciate when I had my own room and space.

I guess what I'm saying, my dream size is 1400-1500 for me and my husband, and 1900 sq feet with the kids.
