We just bought a fully gutted/renovated single story 1500 sq ft house. The lot is 8100 sq ft, which is pretty big in the LA suburban area (south of Pasadena). 4 beds, 2 baths, open kitchen-dining-living room areas. There's zero wasted space! Paid $565k in April, and we already have people offer $580k to buy it because of the location. There are numerous McMansions up and down the blocks in our neighborhood and many families who have been there for over 30 years. It's a nice mixture, and everything is very well maintained. We are also within walking distance to a huge number of restaurants and parks, and there are always friendly families walking around. Kinda strange since I'm used to not talking to neighbors, haha.

Our house is 4 miles from work (we work in the same building), less than 5 mins to the freeway, and the school district is really good. The distance from our work was non-negotiable because traffic is terrible here. We refuse to drive more than 5 miles because it may take up to 40 mins in the evenings.

We were very lucky because the seller was also the agent, and their pictures were terrible. Just terrible. There were 7 pics of the kitchen and none of it was focused, plus 6-7 pics of the outside when it was gloomy and dark. We almost didn't see the house based on the pics! They did such an amazing job renovating the place and we were so amazed by how it looked in person that we put in an offer within 2 hours of seeing the house, and opened escrow that same day.

We're just in the process of moving from a 950 sq ft rental to our first house. From the front, our house looks like one story, but it's built into a hill so it has a partially finished daylight basement with windows into the backyard. The finished square footage is about 2200, with another 600 or so in the utility room and attached garage. Four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a rec room/den in addition to a more formal living room. One thing I love about our new neighborhood is that prices are all over the map -- there are $500k houses right next door to $850k houses, and ones that go for multiple millions just down the block. Mostly, pricing seems to depend on how much of a view you have. Our house is on the lowish end of the spectrum (not much of a view), and I think we got a very fair deal.

Our South Florida home is 2000 square feet, 1 story, 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, screened in pool with a waterfall spa, large lanai. We built it 28 years ago. When my husband retires, we will come back to this home full time. Yay!

Our northern home where we are now due to my husband's job, is 3000 square feet, two story brick colonial with 4 bedrooms and 3 baths. Purchased 8 years ago. It's just us with the furbabies, so I think that 2000 sq. feet is a better fit for us.

Just about 2000 sq ft - 1 story bungalow. I like bungalows a lot better than 2-storeys.

Oh, I love bungalows!

We live in a one-storey mid-century modern ranch, but I would LOVE to live in a bungalow!

About 1200 sq ft. Too small, but DH had it before me. We are on nearly two acres and owe less than $100K. So excited to pay that baby down so I can build My House.

That home will be 2700 sq ft on the same lovely lot that has about 25 trees, >10 we have planted ourselves. I will never leave this land!

Main house 3000 SQ FT 2-story, 4 bedroom 2.5 bath with basement. Lived here 26 years. Just bought a 2nd vacation home in SW FL and hit the absolute bottom of the market according to the many agents who are trying to get us to sell it even though we've only had it for 5 months. Vac home is 2500 SQ 4 bedroom 3 bath on a lake with caged in pool/spa.

Catmom, I am going to come stay with you; wow, both houses sounds fabulous!

Skip, you know you can come here any time! [you better bring my "nephews" with] :))

Lots of wonderful homes in Florida for rock bottom right now for sure. My friends just purchased one on the water with a boat dock and lift gorgeous home that sold in 2005 for over a million for only $575,000. Amazing home.

Ummm, 600 ft2? I'm terrible at estimating this stuff. It's cozy and perfect for one or two people. Actually, it feels kind of big without my kitties around to claim parts of it. (I'm in a temporary rental.) But I actually think 600 ft2 is going to be a magic number for me for a while.

Hi Jan!!! :wavey:

Can you believe we finally did it? We were looking for something much more modest than your friends though, lol. Our FL house was listed in the low 5's in 12/2006 and we purchased it for $173,000 on a short sale in January. Similar homes in our gated community are now selling for full offer price [regular sales]or more and within 2-3 days. So at least in our community things have turned around.

My apartment is around 650sqft and I feel it is perfect for me. If I could, I would change the layout a bit (I have the only 1bd, 2 baths apartment in the world, I think) but I think the size is fine. It even has a balcony with a small wicker table and plants.
