Here''s a fun quiz that ''matches'' you to political candidates based on issues you support/oppose:

VoteMatch Quiz

I was most closely matched with Hillary Clinton (53%), followed by Mike Gravel, Joe Biden and Dennis Kucinich.

HA HA!!! Took your quiz and answered honestly. At the butt end of the list was Hilary Clinton. I seriously would consider moving to Canada if she''s elected. I am neither republican/democrat, usually vote after much research for the best fit/qualified at the time. And while I have a lot more research to do, she is just seems evil to me. And I absolutely shudder at the thought of her getting the incredible honor of being our first female President.

CrookedRock,

You bring up a very good point about no one wanting to touch Roe vs. Wade, and I agree. I just don't know if I could get past our (my and Paul's) completely different views on a subject I feel very passionate about. I'm still going to look into him, though. He might dazzle me past my one hang-up, but he'd have to be good. Real good.

I took another political quiz this evening and my top match was Obama with 73%, so it looks like I'm right in deciding to research these two further to decide who I'll back.

Blah. Politics.

I matched with Dennis also. If he had a shot, I would totally vote for him, but I don''t think he does.

From day one, I''ve planned on voting for Hilary, but I''ll take anyone over another republican. I would possibly vote for Condoleezza Rice, however.

I am not impressed with anyone. Hillary will not win, as America is not ready for a female president. Just my two cents, so please do not throw tomatoes at me, ha ha ha ha ha

SDL, I agree with nearly everything you said. That is why I like Ron Paul. While I don''t totally agree with him on everything, I believe he is the only one who fits the description, "a President who has this country and its economy in its best interest, ...Who has a backbone to stand up for what is RIGHT and JUST over what is POPULAR. " He certainly doesn''t believe in all the handouts. He is the only candidate who is winning a lot of support by promising to cut out the handouts! I think he has never voted for a tax increase in all his years in Congress. Also, I think he is the only Congressman who opts out of the Congressional Pension Plan because of his principles.

Incidentally, I''m sure you know but I hope others realize that Hillary too is a Socialist, BIG TIME.

No tomatoes, I hope you are right (about Hillary); but I think we''d be ready for a woman president, if it were a good woman.

I don’t want women to vote for Hillary either, simply based on the fact she is a female. When her husband was ran for President, when interview post election, an enormous amount of women voted for him because he was “good looking.” That’s pathetic.

Hillary is the same First Lady who during tantrums brought on by arguments with her husband, threw historic pieces of Presidential china.
Michelle (did I spell it correctly?),

I voted for Bill Clinton, in large part because I thought I could relate to him more than anyone else. He seemed more down to earth. I''m sure some people out there see the election as just a huge popularity contest where the best looking candidate wins. That''s sad if people actually vote that way but it does, apparently.

Are you sure that''s not a perversion of the rumor that she broke a lamp duing a heated argument?

You would be surprised to hear what is truth and what is not.. ;-)

We have a friend who knew secret servicemen during that time.. she''s not a very nice lady, she did break things in the White House per my understanding and has a potty mouth to secret servicemen, pretty ungrateful. One of the men who cared for that family was asked how well he liked them, his response was, My Mother taught me that if I didn''t have anything nice to say, not to say anything at all...

My DH knows pilots who flew the Clintons during those years, and their characterization of her is similar to what SDL describes, above. They said that Bill was reasonably friendly and personable, but Hillary was not friendly, would throw a tantrum if things (beyond anyone''s control) didn''t go her way, etc...

I have one of those "friends who knew", also. In this case the "friend knew a nurse who was present in the ER when Richard Gere required the extraction of a rodent from his rectum" (allegedly). While I don''t rely on the press to deliver the unadulterated truth, I would be surprised to find the heretofore unreported truth about Hillary Clinton on a diamond forum.

I do believe she''s a bit of a seeyounexttuesday, though! Maybe something crawled up her butt and died. I actually have this friend who knows someone who..... oh, nevermind!

I am hoping to hear why a particular candidate is liked. I am so undecided; I feel like I like none of the candidates, *sigh*. Can people tell me why you are voting for a particular person and what issues they support? I agree, I rather not hear why you don't like people; I personally don't find it helpful in trying to decide.

SDL... I love what you wrote and just as OFG agrees with what you said, so do I. She pretty much responded the same way I would have and was going to until I saw her post. (It must be a Ron Paul thing)
I too voted for Bush, and unfortunately I felt forced to pick between the lesser of 2 evils and that is how I arrived at that decision. Sad...
I am probably one of the younger people getting all passionate about this thread, but it is bc I really feel like our next election is so very important for our country and its morality. I have to say that I am truly terrified that Hillary could be elected, even to the point that my BF and I have considered leaving the country. Dramatic I know... but it is painful to watch what used to be the greatest country just fade... And let me just say that it is not bc she is a woman, I am all for a woman if she is qualified and I believe in her.

I will say that I will vote for Ron Paul, and for a few different reasons. Do I agree with everything he stands for? NO... But I do not feel like I would be settling by voting for him, and most importantly I do not feel like he is evil, which is how I feel about Hillary. She just gives me the worst feeling.
I don''t believe in handouts, being taxed to death (and even after death...estate tax), or all the unnecessary spending we do. I do not want to pay SS, bc I will never see a dime of it. And I do believe that I deserve what I work hard for. I am tired of hearing about people who milk our welfare sysem and I am even more tired of paying for it! Most importantly: This war was a mistake on so many levels that we will not truly be able to see what we have done for years to come. It has to stop! Ron Paul will do that...

PS... I might throw China if Hillary gets elected!!

Thanks Skippy! I''m looking for that kind of information as well (that''s why I began the thread). I''m having a hard time too. I''ve gone to all of the candidates'' sites but it''s so one-sided (obviously). I''d ideally love to see a chart (I''m very visual
9.gif
) with the issues and where each candidate stands on them.

What about Bill Richardson? I think he''d make a great president! Isn''t that part of the point. Finding someone who''ll do a good job, not just someone who fits some checklist. Though he does fit my checklist at least.

Hey Zoe & Skippy... This site has an issues section (scroll down a little) and it will tell you where each candidate stands. I do not know anything about the site bc I found it on my own, but it seems to be dedicated to the issues and not slanted... i could be wrong though... http://www.ontheissues.org/default.htm

I''m undecided as yet. I want to hear more of what these people have to say. As a conservative Republican, I don''t agree with everything I hear from ANY of the potentials from ANY party. My husband and I are both highly political..so.. as yet, we are pretty unimpressed.

I''m going to take an unpopular position here.

Everyone seems to like open borders, NONE of them can respond with regard to illegals having licenses- though in Mexico it is a law, you are unable to have a license if you are illegal. Its funny how when asked about this issue, NO potential can respond with an answer.

Edwards is a socialist in sheeps clothing, wanting to raise raise raise our taxes.. he''s already admitted that anyone making over 30k is wealthy and should pay more taxes than they are. He''s already got his millions and when he was making it, was taxed at the ''lower'' bracket.. so he doesn''t really care at this point.

Hillary is hideous and I can''t imagine hearing her screech for four years. After all ''we'' were the President once before.. I can''t think of anyone I''d prefer less.

I believe our current President will go down as one of the worst. And while I voted for him, still sit and scream at the television on a fairly basis. What an idiot.

I''m really not impressed by any of the potentials. I believe my opinions on this country''s politicians and how they run it would PO both major parties because I believe both have A LOT wrong with them.

I don''t believe in a socialist liberal government and I don''t believe that you should be taxed to death. I don''t believe that anyone deserves a hand out, I believe that some government programs are garbage and there are no reasons that while getting a hand up, those people cannot work or go to school to learn a trade to better themselves and get off government programs.

i believe we need a President who has this country and its economy in its best interest, one who believes that the US is a great nation because of what we did. Who has a backbone to stand up for what is RIGHT and JUST over what is POPULAR. We didn''t have to outsource to another country for the cheapest labor and we didn''t have to use someone who broke the law to get here..

Karl Rove was the idiot who said he didn''t want his son to pick tomatoes in a field... this is the same mentality of people who don''t want to wash their own car. What happened to the time that teenagers did jobs like this? What happened to teaching our young people responsibility and work ethics over being entitled to everything? Other countries laugh at the US for, for the most part having turned into a selfish self-centered group of people. I tend to agree. It really showed how SOME Republicans think of illegals as a sub class of human and quite frankly, I believe that''s a pretty ignorant way to think and I am not one of those. I believe that you should take legal steps to come into this country no matter WHAT country you want to emigrate from. Period.

I have two friends who became US citizens recently, and they are the people who are outraged at people sneaking into the country and being given benefits. One of them became a citizen just last week, she said there were 1400 people from 72 countries there. She said it was hard, but worth it.

I believe people deserve what they work hard for.. but if you aren''t willing to put forth effort for a better life, you shouldn''t be handed it just because you exist.

My husband hasn''t run for anything political for the simple reason that he would tick off all parties. Being moral and having integrity doesn''t also include having dirt on your hands unless it''s from working hard.
Well I mostly agree with you.
There should be programs to help the disabled but they should be state level and anyone able bodied if they get anything it should be very limited in time.
I have no problem with short term help for anyone and often do so with my own money but long term goverment welfare is wrong.
I dont like any of the current canidates.. Ron Paul I could support but dont agree with him on a few issues.

While I don''t believe that we should be taxed to death, I do believe that more effort should be made to ensure that there are fewer loopholes for huge corporations and the very wealthy to get out of paying what they owe. I believe in cutting down on corporate welfare, as it is just as much of a money-pit as social welfare is reputed to be. I do believe our taxes should go just as much to paying for social services like education, health care, police and other emergency services as they do for the military.

I believe that there will always be members of society who for whatever reasons can''t "help themselves" and we should always have social safety nets, within reason. I think as much as possible they should focus on education and training, and preventative health services.

But the things above are more under the control of Congress and individual states, not necessarily the President.

What I do think we need someone as President who is not afraid to be intelligent and articulate, and who doesn''t rely on dubious advice from his "handlers." Both Bush AND Bill Clinton have this forced, folksy down-home-country persona that just rings false. I''m tired of this "Gosh, I''m just regular folks" act, I want someone who can clearly think and speak for himself or herself, and whose words actually MEAN something. That said, I still have no idea which of the actual candidates I will support.

If I get time I could try to write more (I usually avoid this political thread category like the plague, partly because these types of issues take more time than I have and I'm supposed to be working on my diamond setting
3.gif
) but for now I will just post the link to where Ron Paul stands on the issues, but also comment that, with most politicians, where they SAY they stand on the issues may in reality have no bearing on what they would actually do as president. With Ron Paul, I think it is clear to anyone who is familiar with him that he is not bought and paid for by lobbyists (like most other candidates), but actually is a man of his word and of integrity. Not enough time here to prove that or flesh it out unfortunately.
http://www.ronpaul2008.com/issues/

ETA: But just to quickly summarize, Ron Paul actually believes we should stick to the Constitution (imagine that), and that government should be smaller as the Constitution mandates, that power should be put back in the hands of the states (which is how it was originally intended) as opposed to this massive Federal Government, he actually understands economics and wants to stop our massive borrowing/deficit spending - well I could go on and on - change Bush's disastrous foreign policy, which, I hate to burst the bubble of the Hillary fans, she would continue, regardless of what she says now. Anyway, I gotta go; can't get caught up in these political things on line...

OUR FUTURE GENERATION:

New York University poll of 3,000 undergraduates:

2/3 of students would give up their 2008 presidential-election vote for a year''s tuition.

20% would give up their vote for AN IPOD!!!

And half said they''d give up their vote forever for a $1 million.

This was printed in the Seattle Times the other day and made me think of this PS thread.

Here''s a link to another article about it:

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1107/6892.html

You know I WOULD give up my vote forever for $1 million! I would pay off my mortgage, sell my house, and then move to another country!

Oh, and my husband would be the one to give his vote up for an iPod. Don''t those come in pink? Cute!

That''s just pathetic. (btw, my Ipod is pink, it matches my Razr).

I can''t tell you the countless people I know who refuse to vote because its a bother for them to do so.

Oh.. sooooo saaaad.
So true! I would have to assume that the future of voting is online. Imagine if it was that easy how much the vots could change! Frightening!

Being from IL and now living in IA, I''m pretty darned impressed with Obama, but I''m still undecided. The quiz matched me up with Clinton at 68%, though - but my spread from 1st - 4th was a mere 4%.

In response to the comment about the most attractive candidate winning the presidency: Overwhelmingly, people vote for the attractive candidate subconciously. The most attractive candidate has won ever since debates have been televised. So, if you really want to know who will win an election, rate the candidates'' physical attributes, not their ideas. Sick, but totally true.

In response to the study of college student voters: One of my close friends from grad school and I were both really alarmed when our students asked us "there was an election today?" when we proudly wore our "I voted!" stickers after we voted in our state/local elections (and if anyone knows about the candidates for governor in IL last election, you know why this was an important time to vote...sigh). My current students are already asking me what I think of political candidates (I tell them I''ll vote for a candidate that supports education and then ask them what they think. Overwhelmingly, they like Obama but fear he''ll be assassinated if elected). My students seem keenly interested in the election, but then when I say it''s important that they register to vote, they answer "but I''m just one person...I won''t make any difference."
29.gif
WHY?!!?!

Anyway, back to my friend from grad school - we also both bonded over the fact that we and our partners take voting very, very seriously. Today, she sent me an invite to votegasm.com - you sign up to "have sex with a voter on election day and refrain from having sex with anyone who didn''t vote for 4 years." I did not sign up, but totally laughed my rear off. I think that''s a fabulous idea.
