No worries. I''m sorry you came in such dreadful heat.
Heat? We were there from Friday-Thursday and the weather was beautiful. It rained a bit, but otherwise it was lovely. We came home to 105+ degree temperatures and wished we were still there. Well, we wished we live there, but that''s a whole ''nother ball of wax.

Do you really or is this going to end in another "DF''s guess vs Skippy''s spreadsheet" duel?

2500 sq ft. Too small. Need more room, between me, DH, bambino, and nanny. Upgrading next year, likely adding another 1000 sq feet. Alternatively, moving in with DF.

DF....

I''m not so sure if you have noticed. But PSer''s are not average; and neither are their homes. I have yet to meet an "average" person, or an "average" home either.

But, there are a lot of really great people out there - and many homes are just right for someone.

I cannot imagine for even a moment what you were thinking when you wrote this.

You many be interested in average.

I am interested in the people (and other things) that are much better than average; and size has nothing to do with it.

Well, I''ve lived in different kinds of accomodation and different sizes, ranging from under 500 sqft to 4,000 sqft. Currently, we live in a 3,500 sqft house on a 4,000+ plus sq ft lot. It is luxurious compared to what both hubby and I have lived in before. We''re very very happy to be where we are. It is the first marital home that we own together, and we''re very proud to have it!!

Well, I can help bring the average down a bit. My townhouse is around 1100 sf - 2 bedrooms, 1.5 baths. It''s enough for now - It''s just me and the dog, with the BF for only about half the week. Eventually, when I''m married and looking to start a family, I would like a larger, detached house with a yard and 3-4 bedrooms.

I find it interesting that the "average" here is all about upgrading to larger homes. When having kids, often the conception is must one have larger to be happy! Since moving, I''ve discovered having 700 less sq. feet has made my family much closer. Less time is spent cleaning and worrying about paying a mortgage as our current payment is $2700 LESS than our other pmt - we went from $4200 to $1500. We also have company over this weekend and everyone is completely content sleeping on air mattresses, which further emphasizes the right choice we made to go smaller. A tremendous weight has been lifted off our shoulders.

Life is too short to obsess over the "bigger is better" mentality! I do think if I lived in a condo under 1000 sq feet we would upgrade, but there has to be balance there I''m not sure why someone would need a HUGE home to strick that balance.

FWIW, we went out on a boat over the weekend on Lake Washington (in Seattle) and saw Bill Gate''s home up close. It''s very tastefully done, but is over 40,000 sq feet. That is flat out ridiculous. One room is entirely a trampoline. The floor IS the trampoline. What a waste heating a place like that clean and I wonder how much time is actually spent in that bouncy room.

Small, small space...> Only 850 sq ft.

BUT, its only the two of us. Its also a pre-war w/ a gorgeous fireplace...in NY, that''s considered a gem!

We love it because it has really high ceilings, great moldings, lots of big windows and mucho character. When the baby fever rolls around, we will definitely have to upgrade, but for now, its perfect.

Current generations are messed up. Since making our life-changing decision, ALL of our older relatives have been praising my husband and me for making a choice to live a more simple life! It's considered a very respectable by those who've become sickened by a shallow, materialistic society of people who will work long hours, neglect their kids, just to live in a bigger home with two brand new cars. One relative is stuck taking care of her grandchild just so her daughter-in-law can work longer hours b/c she simply adores money. The grandmother is mad and it's very easily seen how that's caused a rift between them.

I simple will not do it! DH and I decided to pick our priorities and have some "toys," but we really do not need all of them. I'd rather have free time enjoying a vast book collection then a bigger home/brand new car!

Absolutely! Having a smaller home was a decision we made to live a simpler life. Advantages include: use less energy, shorter commute, less space to entertain (a plus in my book!), fewer rooms to clean, and less incentive for the kids to move back home!!

1300 sq. ft 3 bdr 2 bth villa here with a 1 car garage. It is a nice space for us and the pup right now. We may move to a bigger place, especially because I would love to have a back yard for the dogs and future kids.

My biggest question here is how much is the electric bill on 10,000 sq ft house? Ours is about $150 a month and about 1/8th the size of the 10,000 sq ft house. We turn our our down to 71 degrees at night because we like to sleep in the cool air.

We''ve lived in the same home since 1971
1.gif
where we raised our two kids. We have 1800 sq feet on a half acre lot. When we first moved in we were in ''the country'' on a gravel road with two other homes and a church. Since then, the area has exploded, and we have neighbours all around. This isn''t a big issue as all the homes are on half acre lots - not too close
36.gif

It''s a two storey home and therein lies the problem: climbing stairs is an issue for me now. I''m looking for a bungalow/ranch, but DH wants to stay put.
38.gif
. I know that we could buy one of those stair climber things, but am reluctant to mess up the aesthetic of the foyer with one of those.

We're not aiming for any particular square footage when we "upgrade"--it just so happens that the Victorian townhouses in Brooklyn are 3000 square feet or so. I could live in less; I grew up in much less. Fact of the matter is, we want to live in a cultured, diverse, pretty neighbourhood, with great schools--in a house, with a garden for the kids/dogs--and that is the driving force behind our decision, not square footage. I do know people who raise kids in 1500 square foot apartments, but I value my sanity, and yes, I do feel a tad selfish and wasteful, considering that I'm a Prius-driving, nature-loving, organic-eating veggie.

Dreams of my own herb-garden and an Eglu have snared me!

I have definitely felt the California "more is more" mentality since I moved here a year ago. It seems that Cali like to "outdo" the next door neighbor, drive a nicer car, buy a bigger home, the more is better and the competition is always "on". DH and would no have needed a >2000 sf house except his habit requires that he has a 3-car garage/work station (since CA houses do not have basements!
8.gif
), so we picked the smallest house we could find with 3-car garage.

I hope we do not get sucked in the "outdo thy neighbor" mentality as I think that will just drive us mad!!

I'm late, but our current apt. is about 500 sq. ft. THAT should bring the average down!

As my mom says, we must REALLY love each other!

Our last place was 840sf, so this is an adjustment. We had to get rid of a lot of stuff. I sure HOPE our next place will be bigger than our current one!

The house we''re moving into is 1600 sf + an unfinished basement. That is more than enough room for the two of us, but we''re getting a great deal on it and we love the house.

Also, I would so much rather have a trampoline room than a home gym. How fun would that be?

Bill''s house is actually over 50,000 sq. feet with another 16,000 sq. feet of garage/outside building space. My friend from HS has been to his house several times (was recruited by Bill out of HS because he was a computer whiz - talk about lucky!) and he said that the Gates are just the kindest people you will ever meet. Although I would never live in a house that big, I certainly think it''s okay for him to do whatever he wants with his money...he does pay about $1.6 million in taxes for it, after all!
23.gif
Warren''s house is actually 6,000 square feet & worth about $700,000...nothing compared to Bill''s but nothing to scoff at either. Ironically, Warren gave most of his money away to the Gates Foundation...
