Ok so here we are again... considering an upgrade.

I am looking at a 1.04 or a 1.28 round brilliant. Both are WF expert selection diamonds with excellent symmetry and polish... (not sure if thats relevent!)

First one measures 6.52-6.56x4.01 and the second is 6.96-6.98x4.29

I''m wondering if there is any massive visible difference between the two.... the difference in price is quite significant really.

If I get the larger one now I doubt I will upgrade again.... But its Christmas soon and I don''t want to use all my savings on the diamond if there isn''t a big enough difference in size. I must be a bit of a secret scrooge!!

Any advice gratefully received!

I think there may be a nice difference in size Maise, see if WF can send you a pic of them side by side so you can get a better idea of how they look to compare.

What a lovely project and 2 great ( I have no doubt) diamonds to choose from! What are the colour and clarity of them as that might help the choice too?

They are both J - one is vs1 and the other is vs2

I don't mind the colour, I posted the other day that I thought I might be colour sensitive but that was only because someone was being a bit funny about my reasons for wanting an upgrade. I have an .72ct I vs2 at the minute and I feel ready for a bigger stone!

Sometimes, magnified pictures make it really hard to gauge a real life size. If you can draw little circles on a piece of paper, you can get a pretty accurate feel. Draw 2 lines (as in a cross), with one circle having a diameter of 6.5 mm and another 7 mm. The size difference is obvious to me when side by side. I just drew it myself in front of the computer.

ETA
I wouldn't call the size difference massive but it is noticeable.

Real life size possibly, but to be able to see if the size difference between 2 contenders is worthwhile, then I think definitely magnified pics are useful! Especially as the difference here is almost half a mm, which apparently is where a size difference is noticeable and worth considering.

To me 1.04 and 1.28 is a big difference in person.

Chrono's advice is what I suggest to people on the phone.

This graphic is to scale. If you can save it to your computer and then size it down so the image on the right is just under 7.00mm (6.97mm) on your monitor it will put you in the ballpark.

I wonder if I will notice a difference between my .72 and a carat...... I suppose thats the way to look at it. If that would be a nice jump to make for now, I could then think about the next size jump next year sometime.

Thanks for the pic John, I wish I could resize it, I definitely think the size difference is worth consideration.

ACK! Now that I've been quoted twice, I have to admit to my typo. It's not 5.5mm to 6 mm, it's6.5 mm to 7 mm.

Maisie, as diamond carat weight increases, the size increase gets less noticeable. The physical size jump from 0.75 ct to 1 ct is greater than a 1 ct to 1.25 ct. Both are noticeable, but the second is a wee bit less.

Maisie,
5.7 mm to 6.5 mm is a VERY big jump, almost 1 mm. MASSIVE difference. Trust me.

The price difference is considerable too..... I think it might be better to go to a carat for now and have a bigger upgrade next time.

You know I started out with a .25 diamond! Look at me complaining at the size of a whole carat!!!

Aw Maise, you know your wish is my command.

Though it''s in scale this image will be different sizes on different monitors.
To be meaningful you''ll need to size it down accordingly.

5.70, 6.54, 6.97

yes it is! the good (or bad?) thing is that the differences become less noticable in the bigger sizes.

Good for you Maisie! I have been following your quest to upgrade and I am so so happy for you. In all honesty, and just being me, I would go for the 1.24.

Please let us know what you decide!

Hey John, since you seem to have nothing better to do
9.gif

, could you show the difference between a 1.09 and 1.20. I don''t have diameter measurements, but they are ideal cut.

TIA!

p.s. I realize it probably won''t be much, that''s my point.

Ok, I modeled these as identical modern Tolks @ 61D.
In this scenario the 1.09 = 6.65mm and 1.20 = 6.87 mm.

Normal disclaimers about ct weight less predictable than mm - and of course about the size the image appears on your monitors - apply.

Yup, my guess is that when set, they''ll be even harder to tell apart. (Refering to the 1.09 and 1.2)

Pish posh Belle. Ellen was just being nice to the slow guy. By the way, congrats on the 10K posts - that's recent. How many people on PS in that club now?

PS: Rodents of Unusual Size? I don't believe they exist.

John,

Can I ask you to do 6.90 and 7.0? Pretty please!! I don''t think there will be much difference but I''m just really, really, curious.

Thanks!
