I hope all went well - but are you going to take some pain meds for the next few days? I sure would. Don''t even wanna know how the pain is for at least 3 days.
9.gif

I hear ya..
dunno why it is that I always get the stingy on pain meds doctors.
Used to be that a script for vicodin or atleast t3 was standard with a root canal but now they tell people to take ibuprofin or aleave and no script unless you call back in serious pain.
Since I cant take either it isnt as much hassle but only got 16 and they expect em to last 4 days, its enough to take the edge off but not enough to veg on.
All 5 docs do it so dunno whats up with it.

honestly i don''t believe in strong drugs for something like a root canal, mine hurt a little and i took advil but it wasn''t that bad at all. i don''t understand when people say that they got these root canals and it hurt SO BADLY...mine was not like that at all and when the numbness wore off i just took advil.

but for something like what you are going through, i''m surprised they don''t offer stronger drugs?

I didn''t get anything strong after mine, just a prescription of 800 mg tablets of ibuprofen. That did the trick for me though. I took ''em for 2.5 days and I was good to go.

Poor Storm! Make sure your sweetie gives you plenty of hugs--the touch of the person one loves is supposed to be good for pain relief.

As far as I know, she is not yet with Storm physically. Unless I missed a major chapter!!!

Wow, Mara you are lucky. When I had my root canal done, it took 3 visits. I think it was the second one, where no matter how much novacaine they gave me (they kept adding more), it was absolutely excruciating

- w/ no exaggeration - to the point where the dentist just had to call it quits that day and finish it on another day. I remember they put that 'rubber dam' in my mouth, so I couldn't talk, all I could do was make pained faces like
23.gif

and moan some. Fortunately on the third and final day it wasn't that bad. They must have just been striking some nerve that second day, for whatever reason. And I don't know if there was much pain outside the dentist office; I mainly recall it during the procedure. So I guess I'm lucky too. But I don't recall taking any strong drugs either, maybe not even ibuprofen. This was all about 20 years ago so of course it's hard to recall much other than that pain!

strmrdr, I hope you are feeling better soon!

HI:

Goodness Strmdr..have you been diagnosed with an osteomylitis? (bone infection). I recall when working in Plastics, these infections were very difficult to irradicate (diagnosed with a bone scan).

cheers--Sharon

Storm...I can empathize with you having had a few done; the first was a living hell done by dentist A- very painful front tooth made worse by the infection that went into the gum, had to have a surgical procedure- blah, blah ,blah. I said to hubby," NO way I''m going through that ever again".
29.gif

Well, light at the end of the tunnel... went to dentist B (grudgingly) for another rc and it was a walk in the park. Needless to say, I went for at least 3 rc''s done by B and all were equally almost painless.
9.gif

Unfortunately for Dr.B and quite a few other patients, he had the nerve to retire!!!

Now, all I hear from my friends is complaints about the work their endodonists do and the pain it''s causing them- and they''re supposed to be specialists!!! In what?? Torture???

I''m going to get" word of mouth"(bad pun intended) surveys NOW before I need to head to an endodontist.

Let''s hope the worst is over for you, Storm, and if you need mega painpills don''t be shy about asking for them.

Well that''s good to think of in case I ever (hopefully not!) need another. Maybe they have improved. But I guess it could have even been a freak thing at that time. The dentist did seem perplexed why it was so bad that day. I guess when they are messing with nerves, sometimes it goes okay and sometimes not.

Incidentally, and not to stir up any controversy (or make strmrdr wish he had hidden under the bed!

), but there are some that believe one should never get a root canal. I haven''t read up on the reasons why exactly, or what the alternative is, but there are some alternative-type dentists (and patients) who say you shouldn''t leave this dead thing in your mouth. ???

That stinks. I wonder if they''re gonna do that sensitivity test on you. Where they dip something in like, liquid nitrogen and then touch each tooth to see where it makes you wince.
20.gif
They did that to me when they found out my tooth was dying from the shock of getting the crown done. I hope it''s nothing. I hate teeth too. Didn''t George Washington have wooden teeth after all his rotted out, in the colonial days? I thought I read that.
