I thought it would be a fun poll since we all buy so much.

Most of mine aren't set yet. And I probably have 15 to 20. It's a matter of finances for me but I'll get around to having tem set eventually. Right now I'm not buying any new stones and slowely trying to put my money towards more jewelry pieces ( with and w/out my stones ).

I''ve been told I must simply start setting some. (which I''m working on) but man o man I have quite an addiction! I find that setting them is the absolute hardest part of the process.

I''ve only started to collect and I only have eight loose stones right now, although three are getting set this upcoming few weeks. I have two pieces got them a long time ago that was hand made by my cousin jeweler in another country so total 10, two already completed, and three more in the works.

Counting the itty bitty baby stones, too large to wear (for me, at least) and too soft collector stones?

Ok, way too many no matter how you count them!

66 stones not set. I am trying to get rid of some though, so hopefully that number will decrease soon...

10 garnet and spinel gemstones not set (the number should be 12 but a few disappeared when I moved awhile ago...) and about 10 teensy weensy pink ebay diamonds that may never be set. I didn''t count the tiny ones when answering the poll. Of the 10 gemstones, I will set three this summer and also plan to buy about three more gemstones over the next month or two.

I only have 2 because I normally set what I buy. I have the very first stone I bought [pink topaz] which is terribly windowed so I keep it as a stupidity reminder. I also have my spinel which just hasn''t been set yet.

I have 9, and have not set a single one ever. Since settings cost a LOT more, I tend to buy more loose stones. To be honest, I find them more fun loose.

I have a few itty bitty learning stones and some very nice new acquisitions. The problem is every time I think about setting the pretty ones, I keep thinking that money could go towards getting another pretty gemstone.

We need to start a club for people like us who think the money is better spent on gemstones than the setting.

The bane of my existence... how can I pay for settings, when there are so many more stones out there?!?!

I haven't counted, but I would say somewhere between 50 and 100. I don't always buy stones for setting. For example, I bought a cuprite simply because I wanted one as part of my colleciton. It's much too soft to set, but I enjoy it nonetheless. Cuprite is a very rare and popular collector's stone. I also have some other rare exotic gems, euclase, benitoite, sphalertie, etc. . . that I have no intention of setting, but they are part of my collection.

My only regret is buying some stones that were plain ugly, that at the time I bought them, I thought they were nice. As my eye for color improved, those gems looked worse and worse to me.

TL- I suspect most of us have these "learning" stones, as Chrono calls them. Sure, they''re not good for much (memories? hehe

) but just think of the nice stones they enabled us to buy down the line!

I know... I try not to think about that part. Luckily for me, I am a very cautious buyer so it''s not TOO terribly much in my case.

I only have 5 or so small stones that aren''t set, most are "learning" stones that were cheapies :) I do plan to set the aqua round into a bezel pendant one of these days, the rest will probably just stay in the gemmy box.

I''ve actually been pretty good about setting all the stones I buy, but then again, I go in for pretty inexpensive settings, so it makes it an easier decision :)

A modest 7 for me. 2 mali garnets, a spess, an Afghani tourmaline, a red tourmaline and 2 gypsy rose garnets.
