Now that I've changed my mind on my next bling purchase (thanks to DS!), I need the experts to help me out on diamond proportions! I would like the center diamond to be a 0.5 or 0.4 ct stone w/ graduated side stones surrounding it. Also, prefer the diamonds to not hang over the sides--comfort is key. Any opinions are welcome and schematics would be a definite plus!

BTW, I wear a 6.5 (like it loose) on the right hand.

purplesilk--Thanks for finding me those links! I really like the proportions on the 1st one! I'm afraid my budget won't allow for a 1ct center (maybe a future upgrade) but the finger coverage is definitely TDF!

Also, anyone have thoughts on shared prong vs. individual prong 5 stone rings?

I much prefer the first one as a "five stone band". That is totally different than an e-ring with a 1 ct.+ center stone with 4 side stones, to me. 50-40-30 might work a little better (or 40-33-25...this might be my choice). We sort of need to look at mm, though, and not weight. I'll be back later. I really want either a 5 stone or 3 stone RHR myself and am interested in seeing what you choose! Oh, and there was a Leon 5 stone ring with each stone having 4 claw prongs that I thought was beautiful. Have to go out for awhile now and will find pic later!

Always appreciate your input, DS! BTW, I've enlisted VC to help me along the way too! He's thinking 0.25/0.33/0.5/0.33/0.25 so that would make it 1.66 carat total weight. However, DSS is slowly setting in and I'm wondering if I should try to push it to 2 carats total weight instead? I'm waiting to hear his response.

I agree that I do want it to look more like a blingy band for the right hand rather than an engagement ring. I found this thread for inspiration:

Is this the same one you're thinking of DS?

50 - 30 - 18 is my vote. I was pondering this at one point and that was my end choice.

Dreamer--can you post your illustration/diagram/photo? Would love to see what you had in mind--it would take me all day to search through your 20,000+ posts!

Ah, well I think Victor's input is very valuable. He has the same proportions I was saying except making the center closer to .50. I like subtle graduation and not 3 obviously different sizes, personally. My vintage 5 stone band has the subtle graduation I like other than the stones being too small. They are something like 25-20-18. I need to measure the mm. But I think it helps for the end stones to be smaller so they don't stick out so far, particularly when the stones are all larger. I'd just maybe like a larger version, but I have to decide between that and a 3 stone ring.

First is my band and then the Leon setting (but it doesn't have graduated stones):

DS--both beautiful examples which are right up my alley! I think we are both looking for the same design! However, are you interested in the AVR's instead for your ring?

Next increase in size stones (as recommended by VC) would be 1.96 total carat weight:
0.33/0.4/0.5/0.4/0.33 ct weight
4.4/4.8/5.2/4.8/4.4 mm size

Thoughts, please! I don't think DSS will set in w/ this one...

Super...he saved us the work in looking up the mm numbers! I'd probably go with the next smaller one, though, and you should go larger to balance with your other hand!

Perfect! That is just how I like them...very subtle graduation!

Please give us the weights and mm sizes, if you don't mind! I take it that Victor chose the stones?

The stones look great together! Were these picked out by Victor? Is this 1.96 combo?

Victor picked out some uncerted stones for me initially, but my "mind clean" issues got the best of me! So I picked out the 5 certed GIA triple excellent stones after searching through the online inventory and he price matched them all for me! The total is 2.04 ctw (0.33/0.41/0.56/0.41/0.33), G VS1-VVS1 stones. I've got to look at the individual certs to see the mm for each--will post this info later!

As for the setting, he's got a vintage design in mind for me that will be a shared prong setting. I'm using his Diamond Source Service so I got an additional discount off the setting plus expedited completion of the ring! It should only be a few weeks so hopefully I'll get it soon! The hard part is the waiting now!

I'm glad everyone likes the graduated look of these stones IRL! Here are the requested mm for each:

4.49/4.82/5.33/4.82/4.50 mm

Thanks, this is very helpful! If I ever do one, I think I'd use your .4, .33, and then add a .25 or something on the ends so that I'd have the same proportions but just on a slightly smaller scale. I cannot WAIT to see the setting he comes up with! It is going to be gorgeous!!! I already have one idea for mine but I have two other projects ahead of this on my list!

Oh, and yummy..G VS1-VVS...my personal favorite!!! :appl:

I want to set my family .80 stone that was recut into one of his amazing pendants! They are the most beautiful I have ever seen and I can't think of a better setting for an heirloom. If you look at the very top photo on this page, imagine it round or at least a different shape better for a round stone. I would not use yg but might use rg as an accent metal. Main part would be platinum, of course.

DS--Looks like the VC pendant would be lovely and make a great heirloom piece! Glad I could be of help to you in your 5 stone ring proportions, too!

I don't know if I'll ever make a new 5 stone, but I will live vicariously through YOU!
