I have two sleepy orangy pinkish red mahenges from Tan. Both have and orangy sparkle with a purplish fluorescence which makes the stones really interesting! I only want to keep one, but I cannot decide which one! I''m going to post five different pictures and would love to hear which stone you prefer.

Stone 1 (on left of all pictures): 1.60 carats, measures 7.2 x 6.1 x 4.5 mm, VS1, Tanzania, culet is slightly off center, very sparkly at ends, somewhat of a bowtie,

Stone 2 (on right of all pictures): 1.82 carats, measures 7.6 x 6.2 x 4.5 mm, VVS1, Tanzanian, cut is much more regular, color is deeper but stone is less sparkly, need to look closely to see the orangy sparkle,

I like the red glow in the last shot of the spinel on the right. You really get the sleepy effect working here with no visible extinction in the stone.

I can do side shots, but sun looks to be in short supply today. I''ll do what I can.

I like the right more. It stood out to me in each and every shot.

Wasn''t one a lot more expensive than the other? Does price weigh in because they are very similar in size and quality.

TL: I won the one on the left in an auction for $161. The 1.82 I got on second chance for $412. I''ll try to sell whichever one I don''t keep for just what I paid for it.

You may have a difficult time selling the 1.82 for $412, so in that case, I would return it to Tan, and keep the less expensive one. Honestly, I don't see enough of a marked difference in either to keep one over the other. They both have positives and negatives to me that make them weigh very evenly in my book. The price point is really the deciding factor for me in this particular case.

BTW, returns to Tan are easy if you ship as express delivery USPS (assuming you live in the States), declare them as documents with $100 value and pack it in the gem paper it came in (not a box), and a flat bubblie mailer with some paper in there to emulate documents. Tan refunds rather quickly upon receiving.

There’s not a whole lot of difference between the two and as seeing you paid less than half of the amount for the one on the left, I’d keep the left and return the right stone (the $412).

Eta I still prefer the 1.82, but i feel $412 is a little steep. I will keep it if I really like it, if I am unsure, I will return it. I agree that it will not be easy to sell at the price you paid. Just my humble opinion

I was leaning toward #1 because it is sparklier even though I like the glow in the other. One is longer but same width and depth. #1 has bowtie but the other one has it more. The table is smaller on #1 which I think gives the effect of a higher crown since they both have the same depth. the girdle on #2 looks thin and uneven , at least more so than on #1, and that could lead to difficulties in setting or uneven tensions and stresses once set. Is it too late to just send the #2 back to tan?

I prefer #2 over #1 but not for that price, that is a bit much. This is the stone that I think I fell for and quit bidding around $300 since I had the JKT project going on. It''s a gorgeous stone but I think you will have a little bit of an issue trying to sell it on your own for that much. For the price #1 is very comparable so If I had to send one back it''d be #2, but I wouldn''t want to send either back.

Well, I have until next Monday to send back the 1.82. When I initially opened the package I was disappointed it didn''t have the sparkle the 1.6 did. It is a much subtler stone. But when I got it out in the sunlight I love the orange glow and that it didn''t have the extinction the smaller stone does. I am trying to pool funds to finish paying off the Leon mounting of the pinkish red stone, so the $400 would come in handy. I just know how rare these stones are going to become and I''m sure I would regret it at some point.

My two thoughts for this stone (whichever I decide to keep) are either a Peter Lees Aura pendant or a three stone ring with two .33 square omcs I''ve gotten ahold of.

I prefer stone 2, but I don't have the expertise to say why I prefer it
34.gif
I see more orange in it and it appears more symmetical to me. For an OCD type, such as moi, that makes a difference

ETA: If the black areas, in the first stone, are extinction, I don't care for them either.

I like the right over the left, but I don''t know if I would like it $250 more. I think I would like $250 more to put on the Leon. That''s just me tho!
