We''re in the middle of watching another movie but earlier today we watched "Shut Up and Sing." Every time I hear "Not Ready to Make Nice" (which is in the documentary), I get chills. It happens mostly during the really powerful part of the chorus.

Does this ever happen to you?

I get chills when I listen to Real songs. Chris LeDoux (country) sang a song called "Under This Old Hat". He sings about everything that makes his Cowboy hat meaningful. And, since I live in the country and I know how men are about there hats, it gets me. Also, "Midnight in Montgomery" by Alan Jackson which is a biographical song about Hank Williams, Sr.

I walked down the isle on my wedding day to From This Moment, by Shania Tawin, and NOW every time I listen to it the hair on the back of my neck stands up! Also the title track from Conquest of Paradise, that gives me chills!

"The Christmas Shoes"
by Newsong

It was almost Christmas time,
There I stood in another line
Trying to buy that last gift or two,
Not really in the Christmas mood.
Standing right in front of me
Was a little boy waiting anxiously,
Pacing round like little boys do,
And in his hands, he held a pair of shoes.
And his clothes were worn and old.
He was dirty from head to toe,
And when it came his time to pay,
I couldn't believe what I heard him say.

Chorus:
Sir, I wanna buy these shoes for my momma please.
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size.
Could you hurry, Sir?
Daddy says there's not much time.
You see, she's been sick for quite a while;
(and I )
Know these shoes will make her smile.
(and I )
Want her to look beautiful if Momma meets Jesus tonight.

He counted pennies for what seemed like years
Then the cashier said “Son, there's not enough here.”
He searched his pockets frantically
Then he turned and he looked at me.
He said “Momma made Christmas good at our house, though most years she just did without.
Tell me, Sir, what am I gonna do?
Somehow I've got to buy these Christmas shoes!”
So I laid the money down;
I just had to help him out.
And I'll never forget the look on his face
When he said “Momma's gonna look so great!”

Chorus
Sir, I wanna buy these shoes for my momma please.
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size.
Could you hurry, Sir?
Daddy says there's not much time.
You see, she's been sick for quite a while;
(and I )
Know these shoes will make her smile.
(and I )
Want her to look beautiful if Momma meets Jesus tonight.

I knew that I got a glimpse of heaven's love
As he thanked me and ran out.
I knew that God had sent that little boy to remind me... What Christmas is all about.

Chorus in children's voices :
Sir, I wanna buy these shoes for my momma please.
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size.
Could you hurry, Sir?
Daddy says there's not much time.
You see, she's been sick for quite a while;
(and I )
Know these shoes will make her smile.
(and I )
Want her to look beautiful if Momma meets Jesus tonight.

Young boy:
I want her to look beautiful , if Momma meets Jesus... tonight.

And my wedding song - "everything I do, I do it for you" by Brian Adams.

and "tears in heaven" by Eric Clapton, which he wrote for his 4 yr. old son who died, because it reminds me of my son and our losing him.

Also, Reba McIntyre's 'If I had only known'
Starship's 'Sarah,' a close friend of mine was named Sarah and she passed and loved that song.
Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata (that man was a genius). I loved the Movie Immortal Beloved a must see if you never seen it

Beethoven's Symphony No.9.

ETA: mine and hubby's wedding song too, Eartha Kitts 'At Last.'

Butterfly17, did you see the Lifetime Movie the Christmas Shoes??? It has Rob Lowe in it; I cry everytime I see that movie.

Wow, lots of country fans! "Not Ready to Make Nice" always gets me too. So does "Oh Mother" by Christina Aguilera. It''s funny though, it never did anything for me until I saw her cry when singing it, and now it gets me every time. I also like Mandy Moore''s "Gardenia"; it has a really beautiful arrangement.

There are so many. Full of Grace by Sarah McLachlan, Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley, Amazing Grace, The Way by Fastball, Hey There Delilah by Plain White Tees. Different reasons for each song.

"Not Ready to Make Nice" gets me. But the song that really gave me chills is actually off of the new Linkin Park CD. It''s called "The Little Things Give You Away" about the country''s response to Hurricane Katrina. I almost started crying when I first listened to it, and it gives me chills every time I hear it.

"Hark the Herald" does it for me too, especially the ones that are sung more powerfully than others.

Others are:

You Raise Me Up by Josh Grogan -- his voice is so powerful!

I Hope You Dance -- not sure exactly why but it does

World on Fire by Sarah MacLachlan -- LOVE her!

I'm Already There by Lonestar

***** Voices That Care -- the ULTIMATE tear jerker, in my opinion (For those who don''t remember it, it was a song done in the early 90s [''91?] by various actors and recording artists in response to troops in the Persian Gulf)

Here''s the video: (who''s the guy in the yellow shirt who ends the song?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ol6vr5_CY1o

When this aired originally, it was part of a special TV program that showed the making of the video. There were interviews with those involved in writing, producing, and singing the song.

Does anyone else remember this?

"The Three Bells" (sung by Edith Piaf with Compagnons De La Chanson:

There's a village
Hiidden deep in the valley
Among the pine trees half forlorn
And there on a sunny morning
Little Jimmy Brown was born.

All the chapel bells are ringing
In the little valley town
And the song that they were singing
Was for baby Jimmy Brown
And the little congregation
Prayed for guidance from above:
"Lead us not into temptation
Bless this hour of meditation
Guide him with eternal love"

There's a village
Hidden deep in the valley
Beneath the mountains high above
And there, 20 years thereafter,
Jimmy was to meet his love.

All the chapel bells were ringing
'Twas a great day in his life
'Cause the songs that they were singing
Were for Jimmy and his wife
Then the little congregation
Prayed for guidance from above:
"Lead us not into temptation
Bless, O Lord, this celebration
May their lives be filled with love."

From the village,
Hidden deep in the valley
One rainy morning dark and gray
A soul winged its way to heaven.
Jimmy Brown had passed away.

(Just a lonely bell was ringing
In the little valley town
'Twas farewell that it was singing
To our good old Jimmy Brown
(Little Jimmy Brown)
And the little congregation
Prayed for guidance from above:
"Lead us not into temptation
May his soul find this salvation
Of a great eternal love"

There''s a Christmas song done by Trans-Siberian Orchestra called "Old City Bar" which ALWAYS makes me cry and get a chill up my spine by the end of it. I simply adore that song.

For a different kind of chill--the creepy kind (and strangely this is the sort of chill that first came to mind when I read this thread''s title)--there is a song done by Tori Amos called " ''97 Bonnie & Clyde" which is possibly THE creepiest song I''ve ever heard. The narrative voice is a father, talking to his very young daughter about how he just killed her mother. It is so incredibly eerie that it gives me serious chills when I listen to it, like the sort you get when watching a really good scary movie. Lyrics are here, but part of what makes it so freaky is the tone of her voice when she performs it. Still...yikes, very creepy.

I think you were probably going for the first type of chills, so feel free to ignore the second bit.

Those are WONDERFUL selections, Christmas or not!

''Mary Did You Know'' is beautifully written, but sung by Wynona and Kenny Rogers - it''s perfection!

As for other sacred music: El Shaddai (written by John Thompson and sung by anyone good)
How Great Thou Art

Popular music: The Dance by Garth Brooks is a favorite
The Wedding Song - Pete Seeger
Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon&Garfunkle
The Boxer - Simon&Garfunkle
Orinoco Flow - Enya
Wishing You Were Here - Chicago
Get Away - Chicago (behind Hard To Say I''m Sorry so most radio stations never play it)

I''m sure there are many more.

Zoe,

You have started some great threads lately
36.gif
,

You all have wonderful taste in music, here are some of mine... The first two are my all time ever favourites.....
30.gif
, you probably know them but maybe not by the name so I have added the chorus.

Hazard (Richard Marx) Chorus = "We used to walk down by the river. She loves to watch the sun go down. We used to walk along the ri.... ver. And dream our way out of this town" "I swear I left her by the river. I swear I left her safe and sound. I need to make it to the ri.... ver. And leave this old Nebraska town."
Love Me (Colin Rae) Chorus = "If you get there before I do. Don''t give up on me. I''ll meet you when my chores are through. I don''t know how long I''ll be. But I''m not gonna let you down. Darlin'' wait and see. Cause between now and then, till I see you again. I''ll be lovin you. Love, Me. "
Every breath you take, every move you make (Police)
And the remix version by (Puff Daddy); I''ll be missing you.
From this Moment (Shania Twain)
Right here wating for you (Richard Marx)
What''s love got to do with it (Tina Turner)
Who knew (Pink)
Wonderful Tonight (Eric Clapton)
Family Portrait (Pink)
Lean on me (Bill Withers)
2 become 1 (Spice Girls
28.gif
)
Father Figure (George Michael)
Man in the mirror (Michael Jackson)
Smile (Michare Jackson)
Ballerina Girl (Lionel Richie)
Feeling good (Nina Simone)
I will always love you (Whitney Houston)
Two little boys (No idea who wrote or recorded this it goes something like this...) Two little boys had two little toys, each had a wooden horse...."Did you think I would leave you dying there. When there''s room on my horse for two?" It is so cute.

There are lots more, but that is it for now...

Thanks Steel! What else was I going to do with a week off from work?

It''s great seeing what songs move you in some way or another.

Am I REALLY the only one who remembers Voices That Care (and can sing it by heart?)? Please tell me I''m not. Okay, it''s an odd choice in some ways but it''s so patriotic (maybe not the right word choice). Ooh ooh, speaking of patriotic songs, there''s always Proud to be an American by, uh, Lee Greenwald, I think. Yep, I sing it at the top of my lungs when I hear it on the radio every Fourth of July.

ANYTHING from Jeff Buckley''s albums, especially "Grace". I didn''t realize how many Buckley fans we have here - I love you all even more!
2.gif

The entire debut album from Duncan Sheik is FABULOUS, but the songs that come to mind in particular are She Runs Away, Days Go By, Serena, and The End of Outside. The string orchestration and the vocals that just soar... WOW. His other albums are just as good. Other favorite "chills" songs are Far Away, Alibi, and House Full of Riches.

Also coming to mind is I Don''t Understand Anything by Everything but the Girl and By Your Side by Sade.

I know there are others, too... can''t think of all of them right now. This thread is giving me ideas for iTunes purchases.

Well, when it comes to Christmas songs, The Pogues' song "Fairytale of New York" kind of gets me in the gut.

You can find it on here.

HI:

Oh, there are dozens and some of them previously mentioned; but what presently comes to mind is K. D. Lang''s version of Neil Young''s "Helpless". (on her CD Hymn''s of the 49th Parallel). Thrills and chills.
