I tell you, I originally thought of spess for my tsav. I trawled every site I have listed for pairs, with little or no success. No sign or any orange sapphire either. Rare as rocking horse doo-doo.

I tell you, if I can''t find decent 4-5mm orange (anything), then it can''t be out there. Hence the French cut diamond enquiry.

H, remember I posted an inspiration pic of green and orange a while ago, when you were thinking about how to set your spess? It''s maddening not having access to my scrap book.

Hey Chrono, we could share a thread! I want to set my new carré cut tsav and have been thinking about coloured sides. I just worry about the colour combo being too limiting. Of course this is coming from a gal whose wardrobe is predominantly black and lime green!

It's a pity I'm not on my laptop right now, otherwise I would post you a link to a site that specialises in diamond sidestones. The name of it is on the tip of my toungue and I've posted a link before. I'll see if I can't trawl it up.

12 x 8mm is some pretty fearsome finger estate. Unless that is you are 8ft tall with corresponding dannies!
Ooooh, I am interested! If its not too much trouble, could you please post the link please?

Thanks for the link to Paolo Costagli! Love it!

Back to Costagli. His work was what made me think about experimenting with colour. I''ve been too chicken to do it thus far.

Chrono,
WF should have no problem sourcing baguettes to have cut. Leon did it pretty easily for a PSer.

Chrono and G,
I know it sounds crazy, but orange and green are a smashing combination. There''s also the classic blue and green.

Megeve,
Sorry for the derailing!
Am enjoying too much of the setting ideas/color combos to notice!!!

I''ve just remembered something Lisa Elser told me about Pala. She said that by the time the stones got to her and then on to me, they would likely not be returnable. If you do consider a stone from Pala, I would check out the return policy and see if there is any ''stretch'' for non USA residents.

The other thing to consider is the cost of return shipping and more importantly, the cost of insuring the shipment. I know that FEDEX won''t insure above US$500 when shipped from Canada.

I wonder if Pala would memo out a stone to someone like Richard Sherwood for an independent opinion for you.

Because you bring up Pala, I am guessing I know what it is you are after and if it was me I would want to be absolutely 100% sure I was getting what I paid for. Does anyone know if Pala certs their ''spensive'' stones?
Thanks, Gailey for the heads up!

That is also an option to follow, get the stone to an appraiser before sending it on to me!

Your tip about Lisa Elser is feasible for the canadians. But for me, it will involve custom duties twice!

Yes, to both, Mountains and Canada. I don''t actually have a mountain view (got a lake instead), but I bet Sharon does. And to think it was over 30°C two weeks ago, this is just silly.

Now don''t bite me, haven''t got photos yet, because I can''t upload them to the desktop, but it won''t be long. This white stuff will be around until next April, so I''ll have lots of time on my hands.

Chrono, you aren''t thinking of Paolo Costagli are you? He has some very attractive colour combos. As does Rodney Rayner
YES! Thanks, Gailey.

Harriet,
Apparently not. WF has informed me that they are unable to source baguettes with the colour I am looking for. They don’t have any problems with “regular” pink sapphire baguettes but not that intense hot pink that I requested. Perhaps I should consider orange (spessartites?) but won’t that look like a pineapple?

Blue and green is too subdued for me.

Megeve, the name of the diamond sidestone site I found is called Trapz

Now you know as much as I do. No idea about the quality, TOB etc.

I had another thought about your Pala conumdrum. Is it worth asking Pala if they work with a jeweller closer to you. Alternatively, what about asking your local jeweller, about sourcing the stone for you. I''m guessing that you''ve thought of this already and probably discounted it because of the mark-up. Maybe paying the duty for the stone to come from an American supplier is cheaper. At any rate, I''ll keep looking for you. Got plenty of time, it''s still snowing out there!

G,
Try ParaibaI. I''m not sure what dimensions you want, but they have a fair number of pairs.

Thanks H!

I did try Paraiba and they were all to big. Must be about time to do a second sweep of everyone again though.

Chrono, can you post an example of the colour you are looking for in your baguettes and the approx size. When I''m trawling through all my sites again, I can keep an eye out for some for you too.

Thanks, Gailey. I’m looking for a pair of 5x2 mm or 5x3 mm (preferred) hot pink sapphire baguettes. Heat only. The colour will be opposite to the picture shown (green center, pink sides). Maybe I should consider Mahenges...

Chrono, have you tried Gem Hut ?

They list calibrated 5 x 3mm pink sapphire in AAA & AA grade. No photos, but it might be worth an e-mail to them to find out what they are like.

Someone must have good quality pink sapphire, the web is saturated with references to pink sapphire. I''ll see what else I can trawl up.

You really think spess and tsav will look like a pineapple? You''ve shattered my dream!

No, I haven’t but I will. Thanks again, Gailey.
I don’t know that orange and green will look like a pineapple with 100% surety but with the right cut, especially checkerboard, or with the right sidestones, it might.

Chrono, here is what I found:

Try contacting Tom Cushman at:Allerton Cushman & Co. I can''t find a website for him, but if you do a search against his name, you will see he is clearly a major player. He''s almost certainly wholesale only, but he might point you in the direction of a retailer he deals with or know of another supplier you might try.

Email: [email protected]

Here''s a link to a list of sapphire suppliers to the trade:

I have some other links for you, but will post them separately after some breakfast!

A bit like the pink halo joke huh! Didn''t get that one until it was spelt out for me either. Led a sheltered life!

Twin-diamonds No baguettes, but two nice cushion pairs. Might be worth a phone call. NOTE: Emerald and sapphire lovers - Eye candy TDF
Wijay Gems

This is the best of the bunch from a google search from my desktop. I will go through my bookmarked sites next.

Hey Chrono

Well matching hot pink sapphire baguettes is a tall order, but I guess you know that already! I did find a couple of interesting things to show you. both are from Lisa Elser and are in her latest release that she sends out by e-mail. The trillion is a tourmaline and I''ve included it as an example of colour for you to see because it is more than likely she has more of the same material. The pair are sapphires and I include this as an example of her ability to cut a matching pair. Her latest release has a lot of pairs, just not exactly what you or I are looking for to match up with our tsavorites.

I believe she is away in Nepal on holiday at the moment, although she should be returning soon. It may be worth dropping her a line to see if she can cut something for you.

Gailey,
I’m starting to realize that my search for matching hot pink baguettes sapphires will take longer my anticipated several weeks’ worth of searching. I guess this will be a long term project then. It’s interesting that I’m on Ms Elser’s list but didn’t get the email. I’ve offers of very nice hot pink sapphires in the right size but they are ovals. It feels sacrilegious to have to recut them for my sidestones. LOL! Will it be worse if I look for baguette Mahenges instead?

Mon Dieu! Probably.

You pose an interesting conundrum. Which is more important to you in this particular case:

1) The exact shade of pink, no matter what the stone?
2) Compromise on the colour or the material in order to complete the project?

Whatever the choice, I think asking someone to custom cut you something is likely to be most expeditious route.

But as always I will keep my eyes peeled.

So this means you have how many tsavorites now?

I am more concerned with the exact shade and intensity of pink, no matter the type of gemstone although I am unwilling to go under 7 on the Moh scale. “Regular” pink sapphire baguettes have been suggested but they do not have the same impact. It appears that I may have to consider tourmalines which I was trying to avoid. I’m sorry to be such a bother but for some reason, this project has to be just right.

That''s what I thought you were going to say. So my next set of questions:

Custom cut anything natural in the right colour above Moh''s 7?
Wait for some off-the-peg stones as above to show up?
Consider the unthinkable and have some sims cut as stand-ins until the right ones show up?

Have you chosen a vendor to build your ring?

Chrono,
Have you asked whomever you are having make your ring (Whiteflash?) to source some options for you? You may end up with a wider variety to choose from. I love the LM ring that is your inspiration (have been drooling over that ring and the peridot/tsav ring he listed recently) and can''t wait to see the final product :)

**Gailey -- I saw your post in Mochi''s thread. The change to my avatar is new -- glad the picture helped you with your decision. BTW, I looked at both radiant and step cut traps and really liked the step cuts with my stone. Since yours is step cut, the combo should look great

Hey Tsavvy, yes, I believe she''s done that and they have told her they can''t find them.

Maybe Harriet can ask Leon where he got his from as they are BFs

I’ve contacted several custom cutters but none have anything suitable (either not intense enough or too large). Trust me, the idea of sims or BE treated have been suggested but I shudder at the thought of it. LOL! And yes, I’ve selected a custom ring maker and even they have been unable to find the right sidestones.

Tsavvy,
Yes, I have asked WF but they have also come up empty handed. Pink baguette sapphires pairs are plentiful but not the colour I’m looking for. I’m starting to wonder if I have to go the Leon route just because I can’t get the right sidestones.

Given that you want sapphires in a color that matches one of Leon''s rings, I vote that you at least contact him to see if he can get the bright pink baguettes. He seems to have a great eye for color. My dealings with him so far have been very pleasant, but I don''t have a finished product yet so can''t speak to the entire process.

As an alternative, have you contacted Ed at wildfishgems? I''ve never purchased from him, but his site usually has well matched pairs (no baguettes, though) and he often has very vivid gems.

Which is worse:

1) Treated or even worse - sims, but a ring you can wear in a couple of months
2) Perfect natural baguettes but the wait - indefinite?

You maybe much younger than I am or more patient. Me, I''ve waited long enough and I am no longer all that patient!! I want these stones set NOW!, before I need stronger strength lenses to see them with.

Each to his own, I know!

What did you think of the link to Africa Gems sapphires?
