Are we sick of “What’s this cut?” posts yet?

Please ignore the dirt! This diamond was caked, and I mean whoever wore this never ever cleaned it. I have run it through the ultrasonic twice, boiling water, Dawn, Simple Green and lots of scrubbing. It’s a work in progress. There was some sort of brown gunk on one side

However, I was able to get a pretty great picture of the faceting. What do we think about this cut? I do not see a culet IRL. Also if anyone has any other cleaning ideas for a stubborn case, I’m all ears.

@Mreader @lovedogs, on closer inspection there does appear to be a tiny tiny culet, so not sure if that rules out the transitional possibility but it is different than anything else in my collection.

This was an antique shop find and DH bought it for me for a late Christmas present. Even caked in gunk I could tell the diamond was beautiful. There is an inscription for 6-7 and a year that I can‘t make out. I think it’s 27 but not sure, the setting is pretty cool too:

Pretty, pretty!!! Love the etching!!
I see '24' in the band. June 7, 1924 was a Saturday...good day for a wedding!
(6-7-27 was a Tues.)
What a nice DH you have!

Maybe a quick scrub with white vinegar would help clean off the stubborn gunk.

@Lookinagain, I’ve really enjoyed your stacks you’ve shared recently, these smaller solitaires (and by smaller, in relation to other rings shared on PS) are so charming.

@Mreader transitionals are always a mystery to me but transitional or not, I am loving the chunky arrows on this cut.

@stracci2000, it’s pretty cool that this ring will be 100 years old this year. It’s obviously a ring that was really treasured, it has good vibes. Yeah he is a good guy, he keeps me sparkling and fed so he’s a keeper ;)2

Thank you. I like the way you have your new one stacked in the photos you posted. I find these smaller solitaires to be a lot of fun.

I LOVE the detailing on the shank. Beautiful ring. For cleaning, someone here (can’t remember who) recommends hot water and yellow MrClean soak.

I had a shower thought today, just for fun to see if I could make the date inside the ring 6-7-24 significant. We do not have any June birthdays between us and the kids, our anniversary is March….hmmm. So started thinking about how many 7’s are in our birthdays and between the four of us there are 6, so 6-7’s. We have 2 sons and we are a family of 4!

Yeah probably corny but fun to think about :D

1/2 hot distilled water, 1/2 white vinegar, and a few drops of dish soap.

Soak overnight and run through the ultrasonic again. I also use an old electric toothbrush head for scrubbing. =D

Looks like a lovely transitional to my eyes.

Thank you @vintageinjune, I picked up some ammonia today so I’m going to give that a spin and if it still looks dirty, I’ll try this.

I forgot to address the cleaning question - I love Blitz jewelry cleaner. For me it does way better than dish soap etc. I just put some in hot water, soak the ring and go to town with a toothbrush.

Tried the ammonia and it certainly looks a whole lot cleaner, it also did wonders for my emerald cut. Took it outside and snapped a quick pic, I am not a fan of the IPhone 14 Pro’s camera but here we are:

@Mreader, thanks for the tip, do they sell it in stores or is it online only?

@glitterata, thanks for suggesting ammonia, it really helped.

Right?! Mind you the first pictures I posted were taken after a good bit of effort, it really was filthy. I could see even beyond the filth that it was a beautiful diamond though. The good ones, you can still see the potential under all the grime.

Maybe you guys wouldn’t mind helping me figure out how to wear this. It is a little big, which is crazy because I NEVER find rings that fit me in antique stores and that day there were multiple, go figure! I have to wear at least three bands or one wide band with it to keep it from spinning. What do you think looks the best, keep in mind I wouldn’t normally wear all these, it’s just temp until I can get some ring sizers.

Widest band I own

A band on either side, not my fave tbh
