I realize it's best to get her opinion (and I have and will continue to), however, she hasn't owned and been wearing them for many years like many of you to really get a feel for size. Especially in the case of "DSS," what might seem big to her now may not in the future so I wanted to get many votes/opinions to compare.

What is her current opinion?

Perhaps 3 but I don't think she really knows yet.

Also, I'm a bit surprised by the amount of people saying 3.5+, but at the same time, I guess I shouldn't be... but I'm not sure those that voted 3.5+ are looking at it in terms of proportions.

As neil has said, this is a diamond forum and many of us here like large diamonds. A 3 carat diamond is certainly a very large stone but IMO would look fine on a 6.5 finger, if that is your gf's preference. I would think DSS wouldn't set in for a long time, in fact some people never experience it. You could go with a vendor with a good upgrade policy, in any case.

I'm so conflicted! And it's not even a real decision for me. I wear <0.5 carat on a daily basis. I think I'd like 1-1.5 but considering I ditch my ring regularly due to my job and lifestyle I'm not sure I could actually go any larger. Blingy diamond eternity? Count me in! And a larger engagement ring for when I want to wear it? Of course! My social circle wears about the same size I do. I have a very high set ring and cycle to work so that doesn't help. There are several smaller things about my life that if they changed I could see myself wearing a larger ring. Bicycles, city commutes in heavy traffic, and rings don't go together. Lifestyle, jobs, and social circles are definitely a factor, in that order for me.

For a non-halo setting, I don't think I'd go larger than 10.5-11 mm... 10 mm is my Holy Grail for rounds. [emoji7]

... And I am considering proportion… I wear a size 5-5.25. hehehe [emoji57]

It's completely personal, but I wear a size 5.75-6 and my sweet spot is 8-9mm. I know that's quite a range, but it really depends on the setting too. For example, with a simple solitaire or bezel setting I'd go larger, but with a halo setting I would stay on the smaller end of that range. But 8-9mm is the proportion I like on my own hand, and what I'm comfortable wearing from day to day. I've gone bigger, and it's too much for me. I find 8.5mm to be my goldilocks size - juuuuuust right.

About 3.75-3.85 ct for a well cut stone.

I tried on a 2ct recently, out of curiosity. I really didn't think it looked that big, which surprised me. My finger size is a 5. I think I could easily wear 3.25ct, but probably not that much bigger as my everyday style is quite low-key. Perhaps take into account her personal style overall.

I have a ring size of 4, and my current ring's center is 7.73x7.68mm, OEC, but am in the process of having a ring designed for an almost 9mm stone with a halo. I think that will probably be my max. everyday size I could handle, considering I work with my hands for a living.

After seeing more sizes in person, I'm not longer surprised by the amount of votes over 3.5. Might end up with close to 4.

I think you'd have been much better off asking for hand shots. But I will tell you right now, if her social circle and family are wearing 1 ct diamonds, she is going to look pretty overdone at 4 cts. The contrary is true, too. It is fine to be on the upper end of the friend and family range, but I know I would feel really uncomfortable wearing a diamond any larger than I do now (2.3 cts) when the next largest diamond in my family is 1.25 cts and most of my friends wear 2 cts or under.

For what it's worth, a 5.5 finger with ring 5.75 and an 8.4mm, 2.3 ct diamond. You could go up to 8.5 mm and have about the same look on her finger.

Then they must upgrade... :wink2:

I woudn't go bigger than 0.75ct for everyday. The biggest one I have ever seen around friends/family is a 0.4ct solitaire, the other ones were smaller or the women are just wearing their wedding bands.

Most local sales assistants told me 0.5ct was perfect for my hand (only the SA at the big "T" said that I needed to go bigger because of my "big hands"- my finger size is 4.75) so I'll be settling anywhere between that and 0.75ct.

There's too many variables - let alone personal preference. This isn't just about finger size and comfort levels. I could feel comfortable rocking a giant stone in certain scenarios, so I guess that I really can't answer definitively.

I am pretty conservative, so for me 1.5 is about my max. Day to day I wear a .44, a .76, a .93, a 1.28, and a 1.92ctw three stone depending on which ring I'm wearing/where I'm going.

For me, I get more bling in a 3 stone than a big honking solitaire-- I think I'm going to be the fancy eternity band type.

Does PriceScope have any sort of ring database where users post all the specs of their ring into a form with fields such as diamond shape, carat, color, cut, clarity, store purchased, setting type, type of metal, number of prongs, shank width, finger size, etc. and then they post pictures from many different angles? This would allow users to search for specific criteria (such as 3-3.5 carat, I color, SI1, 6 prong, on size 6.5 finger). Seems like it would be very useful...

I once had a very similar thread. One person's response has really stuck by me, and I can't remember whose it was to credit her! She said that the maximum width should be the maximum width of the fingernail on that finger. I've loved that comparison. Any wider, and it looks TOO big for proportion for the finger, methinks... It creates a great visual balance.

This is really good madelise... most of those that appear "too large" (blashphemy, I know... LOL) have indeed been larger than the width of the nail. Very interesting! :read:

My fingers have no shape; they are almost straight so based on the nail width, the maximum width/size for me is to have the stone covering my finger totally from left to right, which is about 12 mm across.

This thread has taken a dangerous turn :naughty: with lots of PSers taking out their trusty rulers and calipers . I'm at 10mm which sort of corresponds to my vote of over 3.5ct as 10mm round is around 4cts.

Whoop! Whoop! My diamond is a smidgeon bigger than the base of my nail, I do have tiny nails though with flesh either side. I'm liking this golden ratio!
