Daughter channels grief into stunning ‘Wonderland’ photos
“The trigger for the way photography changed my life was my mother’s diagnosis with cancer,” artist Kirsty Mitchell says. “Photography became my voice when I couldn’t speak about what I was going through.”
Kirsty’s mother, Maureen, was a beloved English teacher who was passionate about sharing stories. “She wanted to instill a belief in beauty and creativity in children,” the London-based artist recalls. “She collected all these extraordinary books of European folklore with incredible illustrations, and she read to me until actually my early teens.”
Photography had always been a hobby for Kirsty, but after her mother’s diagnosis, the camera became Kirsty’s confidant. She turned it inward on herself, and photography became a visual diary where she recorded all the emotions she couldn’t express in words.
