I was talking with Pete Yantzer yesterday about the class at AGS next week and he asked me if I had seen the great gift that GIA had given to us all. I said no and he told me that GIA had put all the back issues of Gems and Gemology since 1934 up on their site in PDF format. From 1934-1980 can be found here http://www.gia.edu/gemsandgemology/31265/issues_19341980.cfm. (Here is the first issue, if you want to see a cool mission statement, go to the last page and see what the advertisement for the AGS has to say! http://lgdl.gia.edu/pdfs/gemsandgemology/freebackissues/nov-dec_1934.pdf)

Access to the above is free and searchable, but for 1981 forward you must buy the access, however they show the pictures on the front cover of each magazine and many of those pictures are truly stunning.

If you want a sense of the history and growth of gemology from the early days back when Robert Shipley founded both the GIA and AGS after getting his FGA degree in England and came back to the States to educate the American Jewelers and organize the American Gem Society to be an ethical group of educated and experienced jewelers then you can look forward to hundreds of hours of reading and adventure in this great gift from the GIA.

I just spent the better part of an hour skimming some of the articles in the first issue, and I have to say that I loved the history of emerald mining that they gave. For those of you interested in the early history of gemology in this country, I doubt that there is a better source of what the early gemology was like.

Enjoy!

Marty Haske pointed this out in the GIA Cut Grade thread, but it surely deserves a thread of its own. Thanks Wink. I've been having a great time reading some of the back issues. Bravo GIA.

I missed that. Thanks Marty.

I think it is a great resource and I am glad it is available.

LOL! You who went from super curious consumer to diamond cut specialist to roving ambassador for WhiteFlash. I would say you live your life much more than Vicariously!
