Hey! What's all this talk about pharmacists having boring jobs!

I am a pharmacist. I have my PharmD and I never think my job is boring. But I don't work for Walgreens either.
1.gif

Yes, pharmacists are in demand, but it also depends on where you live. They are much more in demand in the smaller towns/cities. If you live near a major metropolitan area, you are generally on a waiting list to get a staff position if you work in a retail pharmacy such as Walgreens, unless you have been a technician for them for a long time. Instead, you have the joy of "floating" from store to store until something opens up. Where I live, it is a 3 year wait for a staff position to open up.

It is a 6 year degree (2 years pre-pharm courses + 4 years pharmacy courses). There used to be a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree but that has been phased out and the only degree available is a PharmD. It was phased out as of 2004, so if you started pharmacy school after 2004, you have to get the PharmD. If you were already in school before then, most schools still has the BS option. My state phased it out earlier than 2004. I graduated before then but I opted to obtain my PharmD as most employers prefer it. You can't get a job in research or in most hospitals without a PharmD, and many places are asking their bachelor-prepared pharmacists to go back for it.

Yes, you have to do both internships and externships as part of the program. Lots of long hours, no pay, and lots of projects. That's the fun part.

You have to take two board exams once you graduate -- the NAPLEX and the law exam for your specific state. The NAPLEX is the "science" one, and it is reciprocated in every state except California, which has it's own licensing exam. If you go to work in another state, you have to take their law exam. You also have to have so many hours of Continuing Education credits when you renew your license every couple of years-- where I live we need 30 hours. If you are audited and it is determined you don't have the CE credits, your license can be put on probation.

I really like my job, but some days there is a ton of pressure. Dealing with the public and with insurance can be a pain (Medicare Part D anyone?) Knowing that my decision can literally kill a patient can be overwhelming sometimes. I have refused to fill prescriptions many times when I feel as though the physician has made an error (and I've talked to them and they don't change their mind) or I think this is not the correct medication. I take my job very seriously and if you don't, that's when errors happen.

I work part time. The hours are sometimes hard -- most employers expect you to work weekends/holidays/evenings. It is hard now b/c my kids are so little, but I think once they are bigger it won't be so hard for me to work nights. If you go to an employer and say you want to work Mon-Fri, 9a - 5p they will laugh in your face. So if those are the kind of hours you want, pharmacy is not for you. Not that I'm trying to discourage anyone -- just let you know how it really is.

If you really like science, then I think it is a good field. Things are constantly changing -- new medications are being used, old ones not being used, drugs of choice change all the time, so it is a good field if you like to be challenged and like to always be learning. It's kind of scary the number of drugs that have been pulled from the market since I graduated.

And if you like to wear white lab coats, I can't think of a better job.

I am a part time (2 days a week) RN in High Risk Obstetrics and a full time mom and wife. Worked in labor and delivery for 9 years and now I have a less adrenalin provoking position the majority of the time anyway. I have to admit that my hubby has the more exciting position of being a Bioterrorism Specialist for the Centers for Disease Control. We moved to the Atlanta area from Austin just before 9/11 and it has been total chaos ever since. We have about 15 more years before hubby retires and then we get to go back home. This Texas girl wants to go HOME!!

I worked for NOAA, you know the weather channel people that brings all the stats of weather from past years. They would send my office info from microphish and very old paper charted documents from like 1800''s and I would have to decode and enter them into a data base to help NOAA
" guess " the weather. They relocated and I didn''t so I became a house wife and also help my husband with his books for his own buisness.

Another pharmacist here, I have my Pharm.D. as well. I am lucky because where I live now and where I am going to be moving back to soon (San Diego) has lots of pharmacy openings. It can be stressful at times esp. when you work at one of the "major" pharmacies. I don''t love my position where I work now but my last pharmacist position I loved. I got to know my patients so well. And you can''t beat the pay. The minimum you can get your Pharm.D in is 6 years and school is quite competitive to get in to. I went to the University of Arizona and also applied to and got in to USC. That year that I applied there were around 900 applicants for 180 spots. I love being a pharmacist all in all.

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner

I am a member of a private primary care practice. I love my job, but that doesn''t mean I don''t hope and pray that I win powerball! I would love to be able to stay home with any future children, but as the primary breadwinner, chances of that are slim to none! Husband to be is a Catholic high school teacher.

Wow, lots of medical professionals on this site!

My official title is Delivery Consultant, which means nothing to anyone who doesn''t work for the same firm I do. I work for an HR consulting firm on the benefits outsourcing side, and manage a team of people who specialize in investigating problems that our clients'' employees are having with their insurance carrier. For example, if you had twins and wound up with a $10,000 hospital bill, and your out-of-pocket should have been $1,000, the people I manage will research your claims, talk to your doctor and/or their billing department, and work with the medical carrier to be sure you don''t pay more than you should. It''s a very high touch service and our clients really love it.

I''m sure that''s more than you were looking for but just the title itself doesn''t really seem to mean much without the explanation!

My residency visa says ''Environmental Protection Engineer'' and my business card says Geo-Environmental Scientist. Another scientist to add to the list!!

I really enjoy my job as I hope to make a bit of a difference at the planning stages! Although sometimes I feel like my environmental impact assessments become expensive door stops / paper weights rather than the working documents I''d like to think of them as.

Wow! Everyone has such cool jobs!!!

Flopkins, what are you doing your PhD in?

I''m a "PhD candidate" myself in French and also a TA in the department, which means I teach intro/intermediate undergraduate classes. It''s a lot of fun-I really enjoy my job.

This thread is really neat! I have had fun reading about everyone''s jobs! Some are really neat (some not so neat;-) and everything in between!!!

I am a "Market Development Specialist" and work for a small company so we all wear many hats. I work with people interested in owning and operating their own stores as well as writing their Press Releases, advertising and events, and web descriptions-I LOVE what I do and the best part is that I get to take my three Chihuahuas to work with me every day!!!

This is a fun thread! I''m glad it got bumped, I had to read all the way through to see if I had responded already, and got to read all the cool job title responses.

I am an "invoice clerk." I work for a worldwide company that services gas stations and car washes, and I do billing for my branch here outside Chicago. I found the job through a temp agency a little over a year ago, when I left my retail career (for which I have a 4 year degree--Textiles, Apparel, and Merchandising), and was looking for a Monday through Friday, 8-5 position. I lucked into this job completely, and I love it mainly because of the hours, benefits (I put my husband on my benefit plan instead of the opposite because it''s way cheaper and better than his plan), and it''s only 5 blocks from our house! It isn''t an intellectually, or creatively stimulating position, but I''m good at it and enjoy all the other aspects besides the actual job, so I''m happy for now.

In the next 10 years I have a goal to open my own business. I would love to have a boutique of some sort where I can sell apparel and gifts marketed toward the 30-? age bracket. I think my experience in retail, my education, and the fact that I grew up in a family of small business owners will really help me to be successful in that endeavor. Plus, I live close to the Chicago Merchandise Mart, so buying won''t have to involve too much travel if I''m not able to visit other parts of the country or world.

Wow, sorry I went on so long! I just wanted to explain why I''m at my current position, I guess.

I''m in grad school working towards my masters in reading b/c I''m a nerd. I was thinking about changing fields to sonography or pediatric nurse, but I don''t know anyone in the fiel to pose questions to. Maybe this board will help with that. We need more money! :) I know, who doesn''t....sheesh

Wow, lots of Medical and Legal here!

my technical job title?

Senior Logistics Consultant

*sigh* No one knows what I do and no one has ever heard of who I work for even though we''re a Fortune 500 Company. I get a LOT of blank stares...I long to say "I''m a nurse." It''s quick, it commands respect, and people know what it is.

Bag Popper. I crawl into dumpsters, with a stick with a nail on the end of it and punch holes in all the plastic bags to let the air out of them so they can put more plastic bags into the dumpster.

This is a great thread. I''ve often wondered what everyone else did professionally. Yes...I count the domestic engineers as professionals. That''s my second job and was at one time my full-time job. I''d love to have those days back. I''m a full-time pediatric speech-language pathologist working with little kids who have special needs and single mom to 2 awesome humans who still need near maximal assistance with activities of daily living. :) Looking forward to the day I can have my own practice.

So neat to read about everyone''s jobs!

I''m a Business Development Manager for a software company that develops automated testing software that does not require programming and coding. I manage the West Coast, so if any of you are in QA, we should talk.

My title Director, Internet and Application Development

Job CRM (customer relationship management software) and intranet and internet development for a scientific instrument & consumable manufacturer (think centrifuges, pipettes, tips, tubes).

I still program software, so I guess I direct myself - as well as my team .. LOL
