i just spent several hours at the emergency room for a "sprained ankle". i put it in quotes only because i didn''t do anything traumatic to it, and the doctors can''t figure out what happened either. all i did was get up from my computer chair and i nearly fell over from the extreme pain that was shooting through my ankle. i couldn''t put any weight on it or move it in any way, but it wasn''t swollen or bruised either. dear BF had no other choice but to drive me to the emergency room. after getting x-rayed and examined by 2 doctors, they ended up wrapping it in a bandage and a brace, and referred me to a specialist since they were literally scratching their heads over how to diagnose me. i''ll be on rest for a week which also means no income for a week either. i''m an assistant manager at a sports bar, so sick days just don''t exist for me.

has anything like this ever happen to anyone? i''ve been surfing through webmd.com and other various sites to figure out what it could be, but all i end up with is that it''s an ankle sprain...except without all the swelling and bruising. i must say that it hurts like hell though! they did give me some Vicodin, so please forgive me if i''m not making that much sense...i am feeling a tad woozy.

Maybe it''s a ligament or a tendon strain or something? Best wishes for a swift recovery, and no repeat of the incident.

So sorry to hear that - injuries are tough!

One thought - without any swelling or bruising visible on the outside, could it be some sort of pinched nerve or similar? I''m just thinking that sprains, strains, fractures, etc...(even blood clots) often cause some sort of visible swelling, but a nerve issue could cause a ton of pain, but without the accompanying inflammation (at least not in a way obvious from the outside).

Anyway, I''m not a Dr., but I hope you can get a good diagnosis and some relief soon!

VIP: Hopefully you're dealing with an over-use issue or something like that, and with a the prescribed rest will take care of it. Still, you might consider seeing your regular MD soon for a complete physical, so they can rule out more systemic problems such as an auto-immune disease (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, neurological problem), or something that might be happening elsewhere in your body. You know the old ditty -- the ankle bone's connected to the knee bone, the knee bone's connected to the hip bone, etc.

For now... send BF out for some goodies, books, and movies that will let you spend the next week in pampered comfort!

Owie! I hope the pain goes away fast vip!

I don''t know the first thing about ankles, but I had an issue w/my shoulder a couple years ago that just came out of nowhere. I ended up seeing a specialist and having an xray and mri. Just one evening I was at home putting dishes away-I lifted my arm up and there was such a pain in my shoulder, I ended up on the floor, shaking b/c it hurt so bad. I thought for sure it was the rotator cuff and I was stuck w/surgery, but after a few weeks of Aleve and not using my arm, they said I irritated the bursa somehow. I did physical therapy which did help, tho I have a hard time sleeping on that side still.

Anyways, jeez, this boils down to-do ankles have a bursa? Maybe you stood up funny or something and it irritated it? Ankles/shoulders/knees strike me as places that can be weak and hurt easily. (and tend to hurt a LOT when they do)

my ankle feels a touch better than it did yesterday, although now my arm muscles are sore from using the crutches. i''ve spent the majority of the day RICE-ing, and BF has been so wonderful with helping me out in anyway he can. he filled my prescription, got me my favorite snacks & drinks and let me order unlimited amounts of movies on On Demand. i only wish i had a laptop so i wouldn''t have to hobble back & forth between the bedroom and computer desk. there''s only so many books & movies i can take before i get a little restless.

Kaleigh - no, my foot wasn''t asleep at all. i was just sitting in a normal position for about 20-30 minutes and then i got up, walked 2 steps, picked up my cat, walked one more step and then pain! it really was the oddest thing.

Gypsy, AmberGretchen, - that''s what i was wondering as well! i''m hoping they''ll do a MRI to take a closer look when i go to the specialist sometime this week.

VRBeauty - it''s funny that you mentioned that because last year, i hurt my knee (same side as my ankle) out of the blue. i had gotten up from the couch, and then there was shooting pain in my knee. the doctors diagnosed it as a knee sprain as well, but now i''m wondering if it has anything to do with what''s going on with my ankle. i will definitely have to mention this to the specialist as well as my regular doctor. i think i have an appointment with him before i see the specialist.

packrat - wow, i''m so sorry to hear about your shoulder! after reading your reply, i looked up ankle bursitis and it could be a possibility. although some of the articles i''ve been reading connect it with having problems with the Achilles tendon in the heel and back of the ankle. i''m definitely not ruling it out though...thanks for the heads up!

That looks and sounds painful! It''s the worst when you don''t know why something just starts hurting so much...

A couple years ago I leaned down to pick my bag up off the couch and dislocated my knee very badly. My father (an orthopedic surgeon) kept telling me to MAKE UP a story because usually that kind of injury comes from some type of trauma or accident - and my story of "bending down to get something" just didn''t make sense for how bad my dislocation was and it was such a boring story! He said I should tell people I hurt myself running away from a bear

Hopefully a specialist can help you figure out what happened. DH and I went on vacation last year and when we got back I couldn''t put any pressure on my left foot - I had NO idea why and I didn''t remember hurting it at all. I went to the orthopedist and she took x-rays and sent me for an MRI and basically in the end she said I strained a tendon or something like that in my foot from all the walking we did (but it was so weird because it didn''t start hurting until we were already home!) I wore a soft boot on my foot for around 2 or 3 weeks and it slowly got better. It finally felt all better after around 6 weeks.

I really hope they can help you figure out what happened! Feel better and let us know how you''re doing!!

Possibly a nerve issue...

You may have stepped down wrong at some point in time putting pressure and stress on a particular area. Nerve damage doesn''t normally lead to swelling or bruising but is extremely painful.

Whatever you do, rest. I know it''s not ideal, but overdoing it on a fresh injury could lead to more time out of work down the road. Get in for an ultrasound or MRI within the next few days...hopefully it''s nothing serious, and can be treated with rest and TLC.

Sorry this happened and I wish a smooth and quick recovery!

Well, at least your bf sounds like he is being a stellar caretaker - gotta love that!!

I really hope you are able to get to the bottom of what is causing your pain, and that it begins to improve soon!!

. he filled my prescription,
There must be something wrong with me as I''m the only one who would be excited about the vicodin.

I think I''ve only been prescribed it about five times in my life and those times were fun! Sigh. . .
