Italia--I know *you* have plans for this event, right? Where are you watching the fights?

Any other UFC fans around here? What are you doing for this event?

We''re having a little get-together at our house. We''ve watched the past few events at the local Ram or Champp''s restaurants, but we decided to resurrect our at home party for this one. DH just bought a new grill, so we''re doing BYOM (bring-your-own-meat) for this party instead of our regular pizza spread. He''s so excited to use the grill, it''s really cute.

I''m so excited to watch GSP and Frank Mir fight! Who are your picks?

I am hosting a party, too! I have ordered all the classic (and trashiest) food possible...Buffalo Wild Wings boneless wings, Papa John''s Pizza, Coldstone icecream...yum. I actually sent out "formal" invites, and I couldn''t be more excited!

Since GSP is my boyfriend, I have to go with him.

In general terms, I don''t like Frank Mir. I think it''s his hair, but I digress. But, I hate Brock Lesner. I think Brock is a publicity stunt...I don''t think he "earned" his place at the top--he had 2 fights (including his title shot) and lost one. Now, who else gets that???? It feels like a carry over from the WWE, very staged, very fake and it erks me. Real fighters fight for years before getting a title shot...he seems like he felt entitled to walk in and be a big name. I mean, even the stupid UFC action figures...he hadn''t even fought once and was named as 1 of the select 5 to get a figure made in his likeness. That''s B.S....I''m sorry...but it''s not fair to the fighters who have worked for years to earn their place in the division. I have no respect for him.

Dan Henderson v. Michael Bisping...well, I''m an American girl, so Dan gets my vote. I don''t feel strongly one way or another...but I like a comeback.

Have you heard about the new sponsorship rules of the UFC? Totally bananas. Mark wasn''t sure if it was just for UFC 100 or from here on out, but this could possibly be the first kink in the UFC''s armor. Apparently, no fighter is allowed to have a sponsor anymore...unless the sponsor agrees to pay the UFC 100k per sponsored fighter. I think thats absurd. Most of these fighters live off their sponsorship because unless your a contender, the UFC doesn''t pay much...and now you''re basically stripping them of any perk benefits, such as gear, clothing, whatever. I think the UFC is getting greedy.

Also, the UFC released an e-mail to their fighters because apparently one of the big name sports video game companies, maybe EASports, is going to make an MMA video game to go head to head with the new UFC game. Well, UFC basically told their fighter that if they ever plan on fighting in the UFC again, they better not agree to be in the EASport game.

Big ditto there! Can''t stand the guy. I guess he''s a good wrestler, but this is mixed martial arts! C''mon... how about using some of those martial arts skills instead of ground-n-pound!!

We''re going over to my SIL''s to watch it. I guess they''re setting up an outdoor projection screen so we can watch in their backyard. They tend to go all out when they have UFC parties. We always laugh and say that they''re flying in beluga caviar and champagne... everything is always over the top! Personally, for fight nights, pizza and wings sounds good to me!!!

I''m going with with GSP, Mir and Henderson.

Portia, I don''t so much mind the ground-n-pound game...that''s fine, I was always a big fan of Tito, and that was like his signature. But it''s all the "gimmes" that Brock has received and never, ever earned.

And...he runs his mouth like he''s the best thing in the sport...ever. It''s absurd. Going on and on about how Frank Mir has a "fake belt"...well, actually Brock, lets beef up your UFC knowledge database...interim is actually a common thing...and very real...it''s given when the current champ (you) is unable to defend your belt, or steps down. It isn''t like Frank made a glue and tape belt...he won a fight that was for the interim belt as determined by your boss, Brock. You want to talk fake...lets talk about wrestling.

OMG, so true!!! LOL!! I haven't heard much of his talk. Haven't followed UFC as much as I used to, but my DH does. He thinks he's just doing that to hype up the fights. I dunno... Brock just irritates me. Bleh!

I guess I really like fighters who are pretty good at everything... striking, wrestling and submissions, but then again it was always interesting to watch Liddell fight. Boy, if he landed a solid one... lights out!

So what are the most memorable fights you've seen? I remember when Sean Sherk was fighting someone (can't remember who... BJ maybe) a couple of years ago... what a bloody fight that was. They just kept on going. He was being interviewed and the blood was pouring out from his knit cap down his face. I think BJ won that one? Couldn't believe the refs let the fight go on. I've seen some *really* great fights in the past with really incredible skills, but unfortunately can't remember who... it's all a blur. haha Maybe you can jog my memory?

Liddell used to be really good, but like Dana White said, he hopes Chuck never fights again. He''s getting older, and his abilities aren''t what they once were. He''s being replaced with younger, more versatile fighters like GSP, Andersen Silva...Even Forrest Griffin, who I adore, is becoming to be old school. The new fighters know all the skills to make them exciting, well rounded fighters...knockout power isn''t king anymore. I do, however, think Forrest has the ability to bring it back together based on his age, but Chuck...well, I think he''s past his prime.

UFC100 is stacked. There are going to be some amazing fights. Anyone who loves the sport, or is lukewarm about it will probably be diehard after it''s over.

Monkeypie--We''ll have to get you back into the fights! Most of them are exciting, the lightweights are always fun because they move so fast.

Italia--Your party sounds like so much fun. But now we have a little problem: I thought GSP was *my* boyfriend. We may have to fight over him.
2.gif

I am not a Brock Lesnar fan. He''s just a big brute, and I have no use for him. I think they gave him the title shot way too quickly, and he didn''t have to prove himself at all. I dislike him the same way I dislike Tim Sylvia--they''re only good because of their gigantic size. Period.

I love Frank Mir, though! I think he''s really talented and I want him to win on Saturday, for sure. I''m also a Dan Henderson fan, though I don''t have anything against Michael Bisping.

I hadn''t heard about these new sponsorship rules, I hope they don''t make the fighters want to leave to go to Pride or Affliction because of it. (We already lost Andrei Arlovski to Affliction--I love him!)

Portia--Yay! Another UFC fan here on PS! The most memorable fight for me was the Forrest Griffin/Stephen Bonnar fight because it was so incredible, and because Stephen is an MAT Specialist with my husband, so it was cool to see someone we know fighting. DH says the Silva/Franklin fight is one of his favorites of all time. (Or, should I say "of all times" as Dana White would say it.

Ironically, the UFC bought Pride...so they are "cousins". As far as Affliction...they are struggling to get ground, UFC runs a monopoly more or less. If you were to talk to someone who is a fan of the sport...it's not uncommon to hear "I love UFC, it's a great sport"--UFC and MMA, for most people, are one in the same.

I personally don't have a "favorite" fight...so many of them were really good. There is this one guy, Tamden McCroy--aka, The Barn Cat. He was really good and unassuming. And funny. I wouldn't say it was my "favorite" of all time, but it was good.

I don't know if you've ever been to a fight live, but the usually (and sometimes surprisingly) the preliminary fights are incredible!!!

Italia--You''re right, I knew about UFC buying Pride. I think I love watching the UFC fights over Pride or Affliction (or Elite, etc.) because of the familiarity--we''ve been watching UFC religiously for years so I''m just used to all of the refs and announcers, etc.

We did watch Affliction not too long ago when Arlovski fought, though. Can''t miss him!

We''ve never seen a fight live, but we were in Vegas during a fight and stayed at the MGM Grand Signature hotel, which is attached to the MGM Grand, where the fight was being held. We met Anderson Silva and a bunch of other fighters, I have pictures somewhere . . .

Ah, yes... I think remember that one. Silva had him in a Thai clinch (had to ask dh what the heck that was called) and started throwing knees in the face, right? Franklin didn''t seem right that night from the moment he got in the cage.

Italia,

I''m guessing you''ve been to a live fight? Did you go to the one they had in Chicago? We were out of town so we didn''t go. The in-laws have been to a few fights in Vegas. One day my dh and I would like to do that.

I agree that the prelim fights are great. Sometimes you see them after the main fights if they don''t run over on time. Ya know... sometimes they''re better than the main fights.

So far there has only been one here in Chicago (Silva v. Cote) and we didn''t go because we were actually out of town that weekend. We usually travel to see them...Las Vegas, Columbus...and we''re really hoping NYC sanctions them soon because we''d love to have a reason to go there! We''ve been to 10, maybe more "events" and a couple of Fight Night Lives. It generally depends on the card, and how badly we want to see it.

Recently, we went to Columbus Ohio to see Quinton Jackson v. Keith Jardine. It was an okay event over all...but there was one prelim fight where the guy was knocked out, and stayed down for close to 7 minutes. People were like really worried. Emergency staff had the back-board out and everything. As sick as it probably sounds, those are the good fights that unfortunately never make the air if the full event runs long or ontime. I really think that they should have an option for people buying the fights at home, that for an extra $10.00 they can buy/watch the prelims. I''d do it every time!

I really wish I was going to 100. I''m hosting my DH''s birthday in Vegas on a short time later...but the tickets sold so fast, and were resold to pricey, it just didn''t work

We used to have BIG parties for UFC in our backyard. We set-up a screen (sheet!) on the side of the garage and use an LCD projector connected to our TV to show the fights - larger than life!! Crazy!!

Our screen (sheet!) finally gave out and we haven''t purchased a new one yet...so maybe we''ll just be inside this time and only a few people over.

We''ve been to a few UFC fights in Vegas...so cool to see them live! We saw one of the Liddell v. Couture fights, and the Franklin v. Quarry fight (Quarry and my BF grew up together, so we were going to see him...that wasn''t a good fight for him).
14.gif

Cool side note...since my BF is good friends with Quarry, we had an AWESOME night on the town with the boyz from Ultimate Fighter season 1 (griffin, bonnar, karalexis...franklin was there, too). I was in HEAVEN...OMG sooooo HOT!!! Seriously, I will never forget that night!

There is an atmosphere for sure surrounding the fights when you''re there in the mix.

Last fight we went to was in Columbus...and it happened to coincide with the Arnold Schwarenegger fit convention (or something like that). Anyway, there were events for body building, various MMA events. It was interesting to see, but also distrubing--because some of these people were so pumped up on steriods (you could tell by the acne), and they were all wearing tight shirt (
emotion-41.gif
). So many average guys thinking because they were buffed-out they were tough (ha!).

But once you get to the fight...there is this excited energy. I thrive on that.

Italia--Now you have me wanting to see a fight live. DH and I have talked about it for years, but I was never sure I''d actually like to see it in person. I have these memories from my kickboxing days of the crowds at all our fights . . . scary. My most vivid memory is of my gym shoes sticking to the floor because of all the beer that had spilled.

Rock_of_Love--We were thinking of doing the big screen in the backyard thing, but DH doesn''t want to deal with the hassle of setting it up. I think that would be awesome! Growing up, my mom would set up the projector and a huge sheet in our backyard for sleepovers, and we would fall asleep on our giant trampoline watching Blockbuster movies.
Very cool that your BF grew up with Nate Quarry. (DH loves his nickname, we''re nature nerds so he always laughs when he hears "Nate ''Rock'' Quarry." It''s clever.

If you can go, you should.

It's different than a normal, low budget fight. It's like a concert or hockey game or any other professional sporting event you'd see at an arena. It's organized, with dedicated support staff. You have your assigned seat. It's not a free-for-all.

Plus, you get to see some other cool things. The UFC has this amazing pre-show montage. It's put to "Baba O'Riley" (CSI: New York theme song). It shows all the greatest memories from the UFC fights, starting from the first. Generally, this isn't "talked" about...top secret stuff, huh? It's like a right of passage for those seeing the fights live and totally pumps up the crowd. Below is the link, sorry for the poor quality...but it's the best out there...remember, top secret

So...what are our thoughts my UFC friends?

Bisping v. Henderson....Amazing. I''m super thrilled. Not being a Bisping fan, and tired of his inflated ego, it was nice to see him really, really knocked out. Although, it would have been better if Henderson had been a good sport, thanked him for the fight...you know, the usual.

Mir v. Lesnar...all I can say is that Lesnar hit my thoughts home. He''s a class A a-hole, I was disgusted and embarrassed for him. Apparently Dana White felt the same way.

GSP v. Thiago....I loved the red shorts

. But I thought GSP just blew it out of the box. As Joe Rogan kept saying, GSP has cleaned out the division. He''s great.

Ummm, yeah, GSP...drool!!! I am such a huge GSP fan...he is such a specimen and so gracious and professional.

I cannot stand Lesnar. What a jerk! My bf said he has a background of WWF-style...well, I can definitely see that! His comments were ridiculous and he is such an oaf. I can''t believe they let him in the UFC. I felt so bad for Mir, he got so worked, but was even intelligent in his comments after, esp. compared to Lesnar!

Yup, definitely glad about Bisping! I was getting worried and then WHAT A KNOCKOUT!!! WOW!! And, that flying puch after he was knocked out "just to shut him up" was cool!!!

Yeah, Lesnar came from the WWE. He is even married to that chick-wrestler Sable ("maybe I''ll even get on my wife"

).

I was so put off by his whole attitude. Apparently, Dana White busted in on him post-fight and had a "private" conversation with him about his remarks, attitude, etc...Lesnar refered to it as "whipping the dog". But, Lesnar later apologized for his antics blaming them on his WWE background. Which, IMO, just goes to show how ill prepared he is for the UFC. WWE & UFC...different animals. WWE it''s a show, it''s fake and costumes and bulls***. UFC, these are guys who have poured their lives in this sport...and every time Lesnar gets WWE on the fans, well, he mocks the sport.

I really think that Dana White needs to reconsider who he has reping his sport. Maybe with the new season of TUF: Heavyweights they will be able to knock Brock off.

Man that fight....
My SO trains with Thiago at top team (in coconut creek) and when he was fighting GSP I swear thought this little vein in my SO head would explode. He kept yelling at the TV and getting so passionate about it. it got pretty intense. But man GSP dominated that fight, like from beginning to end. His trainer tho in between rounds kept me in stitches, I thought he was to funny.
