Hi,

I''m viewing a few stones this weekend at my local jeweller - hopefully with my new idealscope in hand. Question though - if the light return is excellent do I buy it or do I get a sarin and check the numbers?

I''m also looking at a stone online. The details are;
round brilliant
measurement:5.32-5.35x3.24mm
polish:ideal
symmetry:ideal
proportion:ideal
colour:F
clarity:SI1
carat:0.563
table:55.9%
crown angle:34.5
pavillion angle:40.4
total depth:60.796

I''ve asked the vendor if it''s eyeclean on close inspection from all angles and also for a sarin. But what do you think???

It might not be the best choice for a ring with that angle combination.
40.4 is too shallow for a 34.5 crown angle.

Thanks but it gets an 0.6 on HCA so I thought it was OK - it isn''t?

And this is one question that''s been bugging me - with crown angle in hand how do I know what an ideal pavillion angle is?

If you check the HCA warning chart here you will see its well into the pendant earring catagory.

http://diamonds.pricescope.com/ideal.asp

The .6 is an indication that it needed to be checked on the chart.
Generaly hca 1 to 2 is the zone I like to stick too for rings.

. Any ideas what a stone in HCA category 0-1 would look like on an idealscope as compared to stones in range HCA 1-2.

I still wish I could calculate the ideal pavillion angle with the crown angle in hand - is this possible or just learned knowledge??

They can look pretty close to the same with an ideal-scope.
the chart linked above and or the ags box on the hca results page chart is a quick way to check the combo.
Otherwise a computer program or having seen what a lot of combos score is the other way.

When looking at them in person after doing the IS look at them close about 12 inches or so in regular florescent lighting will tell you if it is a problem.
When comparing 2 the too shallow pavilion combos will look darker.

Just checked that same chart. What are you talking about?

This combo (40.4-34.5) is in the center of the oval for young people, just touching the other oval for pendants.

this shows it.. the x is at 34.4 instead of 34.5
either way it moves it from inside to touching the line.
DC settles the dispute :}

Just checked X-mark positioning for 34.5/40.4. I shows up OK but it is a dynamic JavaScript thingy. It might not work properly on some browsers and when you copy the HCA chart, x-mark will not show up. You have to do a Print-Scr of the browser window to capture it.

Checked the same chart again. It is touching the pendant zone, but is not in it.
