Since we don’t normally have the advantage of buying from an original source with antique and vintage, you never know sometimes what you’re getting. I know that I buy things and don’t have a lot of them analyzed or appraised, so it leaves some uncertainty. How many of us buy a sapphire ring and wonder, is it really lab or could this be real?

Let’s see those pieces you wonder about, whatever the question and of course pictures are very necessary ;)

Perfect timing! Chime in! Would you wear this or does it look like a Native American headdress? I’m on the fence. DD says it looks like the Game of thrones chair

Saw this at an antique store, ruby and diamond necklace with matching earrings. Very intricate in the back (didn’t take photos  ) - stones were individually set, lots of movement, two-tone gold (WG & YG). They did not know much about its provenance (aside from it came from a lady whose husband is 90+ and ailing). I love it but on the fence…my husband was actually more interested in it than I was haha. What do you think?

YES! And wear it with everything, jean cut-offs to formal gowns. :)

@nala, I kind of dig it, DH said it looks like a weapon lol!

@Eli22, maybe the determine question is, would you wear it? If so then it is a pretty epic set.

I received this ring about a year ago. It was a gift, and nothing was known about it.
It is 10k, so right there I knew it was not anything too expensive.
But what was it? Glass? Rock crystal?
When I attended the recent gem and mineral show in my town, I brought it to the gem Identification booth.
It turned out to be synthetic spinel. So yay, not glass!

@stracci2000, is it white or blue? That is an amazing ring, love the setting and your pretty pink nails.

The stone is clear. In certain lighting is is a real sparkler, in other lighting it looks glassy.
But the basket is really pretty. I'm thinking it is vintage. What do you think?

Definitely vintage, just not sure how vintage.

Right? Price per wear comes to mind…so use it as much as you can!!

I think it’s pretty and I admire it A LOT…but you’re right- I don’t think I would wear it often enough to justify? It seems like such a unique set, just don’t want to get caught up in my husband’s enthusiasm for it.

Do you love it?

Do you love it?
I “love” it as in I’m enthusiastic about it…but not “in love” with it, if that makes sense. Also learning it may be overpriced so I need to gather more info! :shifty:

@nala - UO, but I wouldn’t wear it. The three round diamonds at the bottom seem out of place. The top half of the ring is pretty cool.

@Eli22 - It’s a stunner, but if you are getting a true statement piece I’d hope you feel amazing when you wear it. It sounds like you have hesitations.

@stracci2000 - Love it! I would wear that and give DH a little pop on the noggin with it whenever he got out of line :D

This one. Can It be a natural sapphire?

Pretty sapphire ring @nala, love that color. As for the diamond, looks brownish yellow, maybe a hint of green.

I know you are having a time with this ring @Smith3 but it is just so beautiful, both the setting and the cut of the diamond. It’s very romantic to think that a husband upgraded his wife’s diamond and because she was so attached to the original setting, they just used it despite it being a bit too small.

Guys, I have so many pieces I wonder about, that’s why I haven’t posted lol!

@lala646, tomorrow I’ll post some wonders since I’m off to work in a little bit.

PSA: if you have the opportunity to upgrade to the IPhone 14 (specifically the Pro) don’t do it! The camera on this phone is worse for taking jewelry pictures than the 11 Pro I had. Some of these pictures I had on my phone already, in case they look familiar, they are!

Okay so pieces I wonder about, granted, many of these just need to be looked at by an appraiser or GIA but I’m a lazy sloth so…..

I wonder if this sapphire is natural, I’ve put it under the microscope but still not certain.

Same idea, the top band was sold to be as platinum Art deco lab ruby eternity. The stones are very abraded so it’s hard to get a good look at them. Would be great to find out it’s natural ruby!

Orange Blossom ring, from the side it looks like it could have had tapered baguettes and the buttercups were added later, maybe earrings? However the drill marks match the center, maybe it’s a concoction of multiple things on a Traub band?

Then I wonder about the color of this diamond, to me it is so white but old cuts can be tricky:

Thank you @kgizo ! I agree it’s pretty, but I have to pump the brakes on this one. I asked for more specs/info on the set and this is what I got - no carats or gold weight. I guess it hasn’t been formally appraised.

“Necklace: 64 diamonds - 3.25mm, 67 rubies - grade A 4.88mm, evidence of heating.
earrings: 34 diamonds and 44 rubies
both 18k white and yellow gold
total weight: 48.7g necklace, 21.3g earrings”

I don’t want to pursue appraisal/gem lab cert until I know for sure I’m ready to buy. I will let this cool off a bit and see if I feel the same in a couple of weeks or so. If it’s sold by then…it wasn’t for me ;))

The blue of the sapphire is gorgeous! I’m no help because my “gemstone eyes” are still developing

Ugh, I’m just realizing I posted the same picture twice and not the one I meant to, going to annoy me endlessly since it’s too late to fit it.

Thanks so much @Eli22, it’s one of the few colored stone rings I own so even with a microscope, I have no idea what I’m doing.

i really love it
i'd wear it

I would love it if someone could weigh in on this piece with some guesses as to age. It’s a very heavy 14k brooch with a gigantic amethyst (not sure if it’s real). It has wires on the back so it can also be a pendant. I’m guessing mid century but no idea.

Gorgeous!
I think 1950's-60's. I'd call it a Victorian revival piece.
If it really was Victorian era, the clasp would be different.
